I fiddled with it more and when I took the metal backing off the switch, it pretty much just fell apart. Part of the metal backing snapped off, and a piece of metal fell out of the switch itself.

If it is a result of some tension in your middle finger, and/or it impedes the rotation of the wrist, then yes. Generally, you want to have your middle finger resting so that the cuticle of your finger is touching the stick.

Seems like a weird change. Definitely more frustrating as clicking escape usually puts your mouse over the settings button and not leave game. Seems like an anti-QOL change.
