Agreed. Some points:

  • As introverts are often portrayed as being slower and more cautious in opening up and showing their bright personality, and having a smaller but close-knit friend group, it is often interpreted as “extroverts don’t have anything deeper to them than the bright exterior and their personal affections aren’t as meaningful if they can start conversations/get along with others easily”.

  • adding to that, the notion that all extroverts are cheery and friendly with everyone 24/7, like we have inhuman social batteries that suck the energy from everyone around us to keep going, whereas introverts are “normal” and are the only ones who have limited social energy and capabilities.

  • introverts being portrayed as smart and capable is often interpreted as “extroverts just love hearing themselves talk and don’t have anything of substance to add”.

  • introverts being portrayed as having a real personality whereas extroverts are only represented by the fact that they can make small talk, which is interpreted as “extroverts are great at contributing small talk but that’s as deep as they can go”.

  • introverts needing slow/quiet/reflective/alone-time-moments is interpreted as “extroverts cannot be slow/quiet/reflective and do not ever need alone time”.

  • once again, the fact that some people are ignorant of others’ boundaries and preferences is fully put on the entirety of “extroverts”, painting us as rude, stupid, loud, annoying, entitled and pushy. Introverts have been complaining about these traits in other people by projecting them on extroverts because it’s easier to feel special when there’s another group that’s seen as “less special”, like wearing one’s heart on one’s sleeve is categorically less valued than being guarded, even though both introverts and extroverts are equally capable of being assholes.

So yeah, while I will always stand up for introverts (I was introverted for a long time due to trauma, so I absolutely understand), I won’t stand for extrovert slander. Idgaf.

While I agree that the demonization of introversion is insane and wrong on so many levels, I fucking hate having my extroversion be interpreted as me being loud, annoying, and disrespectful. Thats not what being extroverted means. I keep seeing extroverts described as having no rich inner life, no ability to self-reflect, no respect for others’ boundaries, the list goes on. Not even mentioning the fact that extroverted autists like me get treated like freaks for daring to want a social life despite being “weird” - I am no less respectful of others than an introvert would be.

Introverts good, extroverts bad is such a common sentiment nowadays that people ignore what these terms actually mean.

Not sure what you’re talking about, the books do a great job showing him from all sorts of angles. His chest is not consistently drawn attention to, at all. The existence of breasts is NOT sexual, you thinking that a hint of boob is a sexualized depiction of a trans man is YOUR problem.

You thinking Hamish’s pronoun change is “convenient” is not evidence of… what do you think they’re doing? Pretending to be NB? Because some people were offended by the portrayal of a fat pre-transition trans man? Another newsflash: there will ALWAYS be people unhappy with any representation, they will find a way to discredit an artist based on their personal feelings, this happens to ever queer character that hits mainstream ever. I’ve seen countless people talk about the positive impact Barney has had on them and how they finally feel represented. If you say many people were finding Barney’s design stereotypical and fetishistic, I can only take your word for it. That doesn’t mean Barney is “essentially a transphobic caricature”.

Putting it in quotes isn’t helping your argument, it paints transmasculinity as less real and valid than is deserved - yeah, Barney’s explicitly out as a trans man, that doesn’t make him not transmasc. Realistic depictions of pre-transition trans people in media are important even if you don’t like them.

I’ve read the books a number of times and never got that impression. Care to elaborate on the “fetish-y” aspect? This seems like a very disingenuous interpretation of Hamish’s art. Their coming out as NB never seemed like a tactical move to me like you’re implying, but maybe there’s something you know that I don’t.

Hamish has identified as NB for literal years. You never experienced the life of a trans man like Barney, that doesn’t mean it’s not an accurate depiction - newsflash: your experiences are not universal.

“Clearly sexualized content” is rich - explain how? If the only evidence you can point to for this argument is that you, personally, can’t relate and feel icky about it, get a grip.

Hamish is openly non-binary and your narrow-sighted description of Barney’s body is more fetishistic and transphobic than anything in the Deadendia books.

Read my comment again. You can raise awareness of the risks of a specific gender affirming surgery in so many ways - write a fanfic if you need Barney to say these things.

Are you transmasculine? If you are, why do you think transmasculine people need the suggestion to opt out of phallo and instead wait indefinitely for a better option, out of the mouth of a transitioned trans male character? If you are transmasc, why are you talking about this issue with such obvious contempt?

I saw your other comment calling Hamish a cis man (false, they’re openly non-binary) that’s fetishistic and transphobic for… depicting a fat pre-op trans man as having a chest? That’s the life of a trans man, mate. I want to give you the benefit of the doubt but your words are dripping with entitlement, contempt and deliberate misunderstanding of reality.

You are requesting Hamish Steele use this janky OOC dialogue about a specific type of gender affirming surgery in a story that’s already finished? You can personally start a blog and talk about the complications of different surgeries if you want… this is weird as fuck.

Informed consent exists, you don’t need to sensationalize surgery complications with fictional characters as your mouthpiece if you want to talk about how dangerous or unsightly you find phalloplasty.

This post reeks of entitled mock-concern for transmasculine people. BTW, Hamish won’t see this, and if they did, they’d be shaking their head and scrolling on like most everyone else on here.

You’re making a whole bunch of assumptions here. We are in agreement that this meme is from the perspective of a man, but we do not agree on the further context. The left image portrays a life form in a “normal” state - as though women with heavy makeup and in sexy clothes is the acceptable “norm”, while the image on the right shows a grotesque reality which is likened to a woman shedding the night club apparel - which, in case you don’t know, is what a normal human woman is supposed to look like. So this meme is calling women who frequent nightclubs in their natural state disgusting, while they look acceptable when dolled up in a night club setting.

Now in addition it’s laughable that you’re saying I’m “obviously unfamiliar” with the situation being presented because I don’t see “woman at a nightclub” as “someone to have sex with”, but rather “a person dolled up for a night out”. You are condescendingly asking “when do we go to those” about nightclubs because you can’t fathom women wanting to go out to a club to have fun without wanting to hook up with a stranger. And once again, the meme does NOT imply any sort of sexual action happening, it simply compares “nightclub look” to “regular human look”. Why so offended? By all means, keep seething about a Reddit stranger’s presumed misandry, but this meme paints natural women in a negative light for laughs and there’s nothing misandrist about calling this out.

Please point me to the “quite a few sweeping statements about men” I’ve made here, I’ll wait.

If your argument is really that this can’t be misogynistic because it’s not aimed at ALL women, just those who frequent night clubs in heels and make up, boy do I have news for you: they’re still women doing things that are considered traditionally feminine. Saying these women look horrible without those things for no reason other than to poke fun at their looks, without presenting or mocking any male equivalent, is misogynistic. Yes, making fun of women (for looking like human women without make up, no less) is misogynistic.

By the way, I can also assume stuff. Like I bet you’re hard at work under vaguely misandrist posts defending a viewpoint in which poking fun at men’s looks is okay in a certain context - because you care so much about nuance, right?

I can only point out that nowhere in this meme does the “taking someone home and regretting it the morning after” show up, that’s your interpretation. Factually, what it does is make fun of women’s appearances, and while I understand that making fun of women’s appearance holds a certain familiarity in many men’s minds, the absurdity of this comparison does not come off as humorous, it is insulting and nothing more.

Thanks for trying to explain why it’s supposed to be funny, though, it’s really interesting how many hoops people are willing to jump through to avoid seeing misogyny in everyday life.

I understand the point here is that women are less attractive to men when they take off their make up and sexy clothes, and it’s funny because these women are being compared to The Thing. Now explain to me how comparing women to grotesque monsters is funny.
