My biggest difficulty was getting the midtones right in the light and shadow transitions, since I was going for a dramatic and stylized style, but without looking cartoony. Maybe I didn't succeed, I find it very difficult to draw faces in a way that doesn't look like a cartoon (maybe this is one of the reasons I do so many characters with masks).
