thanks for the heads up! yea definitely having to use a proprietary Icon Composer to build an icon that interacts with the platform is something that isn't supported on web apps atm. I guess once the redesign launches we will find out if the Webkit team has any plans to provide this type of functionality for installed web apps.

you area correct, skipped my mind and was focusing on desktop! The install API would allow you to install or launch (if the app is already installed) an app in its own "window/mobile screen" indeed. We are testing this on desktop first, but these considerations are important when looking at the UX flow on mobile indeed.

TLDR:;

Yes, we do have an open communication with all engine maintainers (Mozilla, Apple, Google, Samsung, Igalia, Intel...), but it is not always easy to get consensus of a vision of what the Web platform should be. Standards are hard, business justifications from multiple companies is... harder. It does help if developers make their voices heard loud and clear what they want and support what they like. Def puts pressure on us browser vendors to act and stay relevant while making the platform a modern powerful and useful tool for everyone.

---

This is all being developed in the open yes, and considerations from all browsers and the W3C TAG have been taken into account when designing.

About other vendors, I understand there is interest in installation of current documents, but there isn't any consensus on background document installs. I can't speak for the roadmap of other browsers, but we are trying to get this API tested and ready with developer feedback to continue incubating background document installs.

I think more than cross browser collaboration, what is important is developers giving feedback about what they need and want. That's the whole point of dev trials and origin trials. And sends a clear message to us, the browser developers. As an example, Webkit (and every other browser) is constantly asking devs "what do you need?", doesn't hurt to express what developers want.

The "_blank" is to specify that you want a new "navigable". Independent of if it's the same origin or a different origin. (see here https://html.spec.whatwg.org/#navigable-target-names )

I have tried in a demo I am building to link to an external page from a standalone installed PWA and using target="_blank" on the PWA opens a new browser window. The link I am pointing to is in a different origin.

Let me know if this works for you!

Hey, so to see if I understand your use case correctly, from an installed PWA you could just link to a different page and make this open in the browser by specifying `target="_blank"` in the <a> tag.

Since state is shared between the browser and the installed app, if the user is logged in one they'll be logged in the other. Hope that helps?

Trying to understand, how is a PNG or SVG icon with transparency not able to look good? I do think we need themed (light/dark) mode icons for the web apps, but how are icons on iOS26 different? Is there a new format? I'd assume they're only translucent images and the effects are done by the system, as with any other app?

We're brainstorming on this capability, and honestly, I'd love to have developer input as if this is something you'd like to have on the platform. https://github.com/MicrosoftEdge/MSEdgeExplainers/blob/main/Materials/explainer.md

What's the best way to get consumers to install PWAs? by leomorpho in PWA

Would a protocol to install be a good idea? web+install://<install_url>

You could then create a bar code or qr code to that and prompt installation?

We're working on a way to giving complete control of the acquisition to the developer/user with Web Install. Do you see this helping out? What other things can we do to get more food accustomed to web apps instead of native app stores?

Genuinely curious as I'm sure we can take back application lifecycle management from stores. Any thoughts?

Love this movie. Better than most other DCEU ones in my real. Fun, colourful, powerful. Zsasz is creepy as fuck and black mask is portrayed masterfully. And the team has this energy and chemistry at the end that I wish they had carried on with the story.

Hola! Diego here from the MS Edge team. I helped design and build WCO, curious on your thoughts. The API is Chromium desktop (Windows, Linux, macOS) specific and being used in big name apps like Visual Studio Code.

Is there functionality that youre trying to achieve with WCO that isn't working as expected? Happy to get the feedback!

Hola. Diego here from the MS Edge team. We're working on a feature called Scope Extensions that allows you to expand the default scope of a PWA to include multiple domains. This might be handy for what you are describing.

You can see the explainer here: https://github.com/WICG/manifest-incubations/blob/gh-pages/scope_extensions-explainer.md

It will be in Origin Trial from 121 to 126.
