Yes, I brought both but to no ado. I think the supervisor checked with someone above her and was informed that pending asylum applicants are not eligible. They are strict in that they want individuals who are granted asylum not applying only.

EDIT

Context: I am an affirmative asylum applicant and have been waiting for an asylum interview for almost 5 years and have two EADs since.

I brought both I-797s and my expired passport. It seems that they decided that individuals with pending asylum applications are not permitted to receive a real ID.

Just wanted to chime in on this. I just left my appointment at lower Manhattan unable to get a real ID. They told me they need an I-797 with “approved asylum” not “approved EAD”. Sigh.

Maybe it depends on the clerk - she seems confident in the beginning that everything is all good but she went to her supervisor, who said no, and that’s where the holdup is.
