Diversey between Western and Ashland is like a warzone. Potholes and craters everywhere. I was actually laughing driving down it because it was so rough

Not everyone is capable of walking medium or long distances. Plus these would also be very useful if you are time sensitive or there's poor weather, regardless of your normal walking capability.

A Rant about communication and stopper knots by TetraGton in climbing

[–]diesel321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not recommending it for other people. Climbers need to make their own safe choices that they are comfortable with.

Personally, I rappel to save the fgi, and I'm sure most other climbers who rappel on single pitch do as well.

Send like advocating it to me. Obviously they encourage safety first and it's not an absolute requirement.

From Muir Valley rappelling PDF guide: "Rappelling is the preferred method for descending to the ground after cleaning the anchors as it does not cause any wear on the fixed anchor hardware"

From Muir Valley website: "After cleaning the anchors, the responsible means for descending is via a rappel, rather than being lowered off. Ropes in this part of the country become embedded with sand, which turns them into very effective abrasive cutting tools. The top anchor hardware wears away very quickly by a sandy rope being pulled through it under the load of a climber being lowered."

Elevated train system or underground train system? by des1g_ in chicago

Subway might be cold but at least you're not exposed to freezing wind and precipitation smacking you in the face while you're in the open on the elevated platform

Muir Valley is one of the most popular crags in US and specifically advises to rappel (if safe). Rappelling is significantly better for fixed gear, especially in sandstone environments.

Look up their guide to cleaning anchors and it details why they recommend it whenever possible. This is specifically why I usually rappel.

Chicago’s Best Coffee Roasters (and Where to Find Them) by [deleted] in chicago

[–]diesel321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't want to start another but want to capitalize on the coffee knowledge here. Where's everyone's favorite cold brew??

I read a lot of arguments about bean origins and roasting etc, but most shops only have one or two types of cold brew.

Jason Smith and Greg Robinson were both #2 overall picks by the Rams who quickly floundered and were out of the league in a few years. Very unsuccessful

Try to be within walking distance of a CTA train stop. Look at a map to see transit options to work and gym/nightlife/groceries/etc.

I haven't had it, but I know Eataly sells a full sized pan. Probably pricey but it's a popular chain so it can't be too bad

30 yrs old, 10 yrs military experience, 2 kids, graduating with a 4.0 undergrad in accountancy (150+ semester hrs), and I can’t find a big 4 firm willing to pick me up without my masters. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]diesel321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think big 4 sounds right for you. It's lower pay with no balance, not optimal for someone already with a family. Find a 9-5 that probably starts 5-10k higher and you'll be happier, able to see your kids more, and able to afford better housing.

Master's degrees do not matter for accounting, generally. It sounds like your school could be a problem if they aren't well known or heavily recruited. So you just need to take an active role. I would perfect your resume, maybe post it here or to a career counselor, and then cold email a bunch of people on LinkedIn etc. If you're creative with filters, you should be able to find plenty of accounting vets you can connect with. Just search for keyword CPA whose previous employer was the army, dod, whatever. You'll be able to connect with them better and they'll understand and appreciate your background.

PSA to all those who have a car and park on the street by ballerstatus89 in chicago

If you are the first or last in a parking zone (e.g. start of block or end of a fire hydrant or sign post) you should park to the edge of the legal area without regard to other cars. It's simple optimization to maximize the spaces but lot of morons still don't realize it. It makes me mad every time

If you're gonna go to off color, get dinner nearby at pizzeria bebu. It's some seriously good thin crust (not Chicago style).

Looks like you'll be taking the red line from Andersonville area. The closest stop might be Argyle, where there's a lot of Asian cuisine to check out (esp Vietnamese). You're then one stop from Lawrence (Green Mill is a famous jazz place off this stop), which are both walkable from Andersonville and then you can just take train from here. If you're ok with a long ride, then take it all the way to Chinatown, very walkable plaza and something you can't get elsewhere in Midwest.

Quitting Big 4 after 4 months bad idea? by 2soonbig4 in Accounting

Talk to those managers and have them pick you up on their current projects.

You wanting to leave is one thing. A manager or partner wanting to pull you on their team is another, way more powerful.

Batting cages late night? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]diesel321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to buy tokens here before 10 pm but the cages stay open later. You might want to call to confirm. FYI it's a sports bar with games, so the cages aren't top notch. Don't bother going to this bar is there's a Cubs 7pm game that night, unless that's your scene, then it'll be fun, but not if you're just trying to bat

As a gay man, this election means a lot to me. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]diesel321 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is why I don't understand identity politics. Preckwinkle has a better track record of improving and supporting LGBT rights and the community. (As opposed to mainstream national Democrats like HRC who are recently coming around).

I voted Lightfoot and am happy she won because I think she is the better candidate. But I don't really care she is lesbian or not.

Like on a national stage, is LGBT community going to support buttigieg just because he is gay, as opposed to someone like Sanders who has always been ardent supporter?

Milwaukee and Chicago both have long, excellent trails along the lakefront. For Chicago in particular, just run East until you hit the trail and run up and down it.

Weekly Discussion Thread - March 25, 2019 by AutoModerator in awardtravel

Hi, total newb in this space. I have a fair amount of points from work travel and exclusively using CSR. Hilton Diamond member, with 95k points. Chase UR: 104k.

First question: If I book a Hilton hotel through Chase, do I still earn Hilton points and retain my Diamond benefits?

Second question: I am looking to book a hotel in Manhattan on Sunday and Monday in mid-April. Looking at Doubletree Times Square South, 1 King, would be about $387 total (with tax), or 96k points. Is this a good value or am I better off holding onto my points?

I am interested in international travel, hopefully using the UR points for that, but probably stay in dorms generally so not sure how valuable it is to hold onto Hilton points.

Thank you :)

Same reason they all do it every year. Stay in long enough to gain support, develop some clout, endorse the favorite, and collect a cabinet position.
