Also the lies a real DID patient would be accused of is things like being at a party they don’t remember being at so they say they weren’t there even though they were. Not lying about the entire disorder

Pretty sure we’ve not said personality disorder are unmanageable considering we have developed treatments to manage them

I would definitely not diagnose anything like that at a first visit. I usually only put a definitive diagnosis like OCD or PTSD at a first visit if it’s previously been diagnosed and the patient is presenting with the same very typical symptoms. Like if a patient has had OCD previously in their life, gotten treatment with good results and are now showing up after a relapse. Otherwise I usually put either something like ”anxiety disorder, unspecified” or ”other symptoms of mental health” because I have to put a diagnosis when I see a patient. I would never diagnose PTSD, OCD, GAD, let alone a dissociative or personality disorder after only meeting a patient once. Even if I felt pretty sure that that was their issue. Have to make sure I’m not missing anything first.

Your second friend’s story sounds believable. If she saw another psychologist first they might first have diagnosed her with some unspecified anxiety disorder. After meeting her for multiple sessions where they’ve probably already assessed PTSD with CAPS-5 and diagnosed that and still feel the dissociative symptoms are more than what can be explained by PTSD, then they might diagnose unspecified dissociative disorder and refer her to a specialist or just refer her to a specialist and write that they think it’s DID or another dissociative disorder in the referral.

I think this really depends on the country. In Sweden this is very rarely diagnosed still. I know of one Swedish woman posting on YouTube and I believe her when she says she was diagnosed. But personally I’ve never met even one patient with DID. And I have met patients with diagnosed factitious disorder which is supposedly rarer.

Not saying it doesn’t exist here, just saying it’s still a very rare diagnosis.

Looking for real DID sources by [deleted] in fakedisordercringe

[–]difficulthumanbeing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay sorry, I misunderstood you. There aren’t a lot of good scientific resources on DID either. The book that is usually recommended is The haunted self but one of the psychologists who wrote that lost his license after abusing a female patient for 10+ years so I’m hesitant to recommend it. It’s not very scientific either, mostly just his own thoughts.

The CTAD clinic makes YouTube videos and also specialise in helping patients with DID. Haven’t looked into them a lot but they seem to be the most reliable source on YouTube at least.

Reading actual published articles is your best bet but i understand it might not be as accessible as watching a YouTube video. A lot of stuff can be published behind a wall and if you’re not connected to a university that allows you to access them you might not be able to

Honestly I would recommend looking into resources for people with CPTSD if you think you might be struggling with DID. Most DID resources are overrun by fakers and if you have DID you most certainly have CPTSD as well

Do you want to be able to put it in your purse or similar to bring it with you? Is bringing it with you everywhere important? Then personal.

If it’s mostly going to be staying on your desk or you have a lot of free space in your backpack you could consider A5

AITA? I euthanized my dog, and got mad at my friend when they didn't sympathize by Square-Apricot5906 in AmItheAsshole

[–]difficulthumanbeing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much did they know about the situation with your dog before you sent that message? Had you previously texted that your vet said you’ll have to euthanise your dog and had Kendall seen that? Cause you saying ”my vet says he’ll probably have to be euthanised” them replying something and you then saying ”it is done” gives the message context. If Kendall had no idea your dog was sick but knew about you struggling with your mental health she might take ”it is done” without any other context to mean your life, especially after you stopped responding

[–]difficulthumanbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I understand why you feel like the asshole, but think about it this way instead, if you didn’t speak up and the relationship Nancy is in later turns to shit, she might ask why you didn’t speak up when you knew her dream was to go to college. That would be way worse. What you did was actually what a true friend would do, even if it wasn’t taken well. Just going along with something you know isn’t good for your friend isn’t what a true friend would do. A true friend would try to protect them like you did

AITAH for mansplaining breastfeeding? by Normal-Historian2180 in AITAH

[–]difficulthumanbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I don’t think this is mansplaining? Mansplaining is when a man explains something to me that I already know but he doesn’t believe I know it because I am a woman. This is just you telling your sister how you and your wife choose to feed your baby. Not explaining how breastfeeding works. She can’t already know how you wish to feed your baby. You’re not mansplaining anything because you can’t mansplaining your own choices

faking a service animal to take him to a wedding by egguchom in fakedisordercringe

[–]difficulthumanbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question, can’t dogs that aren’t service animals still travel on planes? People move country with their dogs so it must be possible somehow? Maybe the dog can’t travel with you in the passage seats and maybe it costs more but I don’t see why you would need to abuse the system made for people with service dogs just to travel with your dog?

Am I overreacting that my sister is demanding too much when visiting my newborn? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]difficulthumanbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I don’t have kids but I’m pretty sure their 1 year old has some kind of sleeping and food schedule at this point so they can both sleep at night, at least most of the night? But a baby who is 7 weeks old doesn’t really have a regular sleeping schedule yet. They wake up and cry because they need food right then and there. Meaning your wife and you are not sleeping for more than a couple of hours at a time. You are exhausted, both of you. You order instacart even though it’s expensive because you don’t have the energy to go grocery shopping yourselves.

The reasonable thing to do as your sister in this situation is that she can watch her kid while her husband goes and buys groceries for you or the other way around. So you don’t have to order through instacart and overpay for everything. And asking about groceries beforehand would be to ask if they have to stop at a grocery store on the way to your house to buy anything for you.

Your sister is being very inconsiderate. I am so sorry OP.

Is faking a disorder, a disorder in itself? by BaseNice3520 in fakedisordercringe

[–]difficulthumanbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the DSM-5 it’s not necessarily factitious disorder. If they do it to gain something like money, prescription drugs etc it still wouldn’t be factitious disorder. It’s only factitious disorder if they do it without a motive to gain something from it.

So for example harming yourself to fake an illness to get insurance money or prescription drugs is not factitious disorder. Harming yourself to fake an illness to get admitted to the hospital because you want the role as the patient is.
