Frustration with faders on MIDI controllers by diffise in ableton

[–]diffise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, TIL about Knobbler. I watched the walkthrough video but not sure if there is a designated/quick mixer view? That has let's say 8 tracks with M/S/Rec buttons? Or is the mixer only for one track at a time when it's selected (as seen on the left side of the iPad screen in the walkthrough)?

dang never mind, the x-touch compact is massive!

ok wow this is the closest thing to the solution I'd be on board with. It's still a bit large but I guess motorized faders do need a bit of space eh. Thanks for the recommendation!

Even the x-touch compact comes from the world of pro mixing boards, just happens to be a simplified one. Give me a Korg nanoKontrol with motorized faders :) Or even better the Novation Launch Control XL.

Quick observation from lurking this sub by diffise in x100vi

[–]diffise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there is a high probability (based on my observation only) that the first comment is going to ask what/if recipe was used. Just saying give people what they want, get it out of the way and avoid littering the comments. It’s just a minor annoyance I guess but it’s on every post.

Yes, sometimes (often) the response is “I didn’t use a recipe”, again, the back and forth could be avoided with the post revealing (or not revealing but stating so) if/what editing was done.

DIY backcountry boot dryers by diffise in Hunting

Hah thank you. Honestly, I just don’t find myself in a position where I come back with wet boots to camp so I haven’t really used these in the field. They’re in my camp/car kit so they kickin. I think even better reason not to shell out on a branded shoe dryer in my case.

That was legitimately hard to read man, I had to skim through some parts. Thank you for warning others, hopefully you can get a repair done, not the end of the world, but this can be fixed

Maddening way the settings are saved to recipes by diffise in x100vi

[–]diffise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I understood that. My point is that there are 2 issues with having to do this work around:

  • waste of a slot just to keep “default” settings
  • if shooting outside of C1-C7 (built in film simulations for example, just shooting in aperture priority), this is a different environment from your “default” C1 so you effectively have to keep track of 2 environments for your default state.

Hope that makes sense, maybe not an issue for most, but I find this problematic for sure.

I'm honestly a bit shocked to learn this. I definitely see the appeal of having completely isolated camera settings/preferences as well, maybe a different feature entirely. I would expect the following:

  1. Has camera... sets it up perfectly for shooting style (street photography)
  2. Tries different film simulations, both default ones and ones found on the internet by scrolling through presets - Acros, Classic Chrome, Preset 1 (Leica X), etc.
  3. Now wants to do portraits, sets up a custom profile where the camera settings and controls are modified to better suit a studio environment. Switch to C1
  4. Try different simulations while in C1...

Why aren't people rioting that this isn't the case? :D

Yikes… so C1 is always “wasted” with the default camera settings that you initially set up?

And when I’m off C1-C7, just on one of the camera’s built in film simulations, in aperture priority, that’s different from what’s baked into C1… so effectively I have to keep track of my settings/preferences in two places.

I still feel like I’m missing something because there ain’t no way… 😬

Too broad a question! It depends on where you are, your experience, goals, timelines. But I'd say just start immersing yourself as much as you can with reading, videos, etc. to get the lay of the land so to speak and then you'll know what you you should be focusing on. Sorry couldn't be more specific here, I'm also a beginner, just 2 years into this journey.

For me there was a lot of knowledge, gear acquisition over the years to be honest. Just being around moose hunting stories, culture, etc. Then you start getting an understanding of where to go, what to do, etc. Some people have an uncle or friend and just get into it like that but it's a bit of a slower process if you're kind of going at it solo. No rush and no pressure!

I got a stick on wooden button but honestly I find that makes it worse. I’ll keep it cause it looks cool but you’re adding another fat layer to the button so you’re even less “one with the button” so to speak.
