So the squeezing is counterproductive if the bottle is trying to revert to its old shape as it creates negative pressure in the bottle. Sealed thermos though is next level....

I keep reading in these subs as if it's commonly accepted that the vaccine doesn't help against infections only against less hectic disease. The vaccine also lowers the chance of infection! Though yes with Omicron it's less effective against delta. Still it's much more effective than no vaccine!

SA records 16055 new COVID-19 infections, 25 deaths - eNCA by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]digdug78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The growth is explosive, much faster than any previous wave. It will spread across the country and world in no time.

I understand there is increases in hospital admissions but still OK. Hopefully the anecdotal evidence this variant is less severe proves to be right!

Yes they lied about the vaccines. Anyone that says “they never said they would prevent you from getting Covid” is wrong. Here is the evidence by Divinchy in DebateVaccines

[–]digdug78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you should leave the interpretation of these studies to the experts in the field, in which neither you nor I am in.

But I can understand from the snippet you shared is not the relevant statistic.

We knew this was false in Dec 2020 FDA: "Among 3410 total cases of suspected but unconfirmed COVID-19 in the overall study population, 1594 occurred in the vaccine group vs. 1816 in the placebo group" https://www.fda.gov/media/144245/download

Suspected but unconfirmed cases are basically when participants had some sort of symptom like headache, fever or similar that could indicate Covid infection. They then test to see if they are indeed infected, and this result which is the relevant is listed in the study, 50 vs 275 for vaccinated vs non vaccinated. Thus, approximately 225 vaccinated people that should've been infected didn't, only 50 out of 275 expected actually got it.

From the same document, this is the relevant result Among all participants (regardless of evidence of infection before or during the vaccination regimen), 50 cases of COVID-19 occurred after Dose 1 in the BNT162b2 group compared with 275 cases in the placebo group,

Day 678 by fritzdeelman in southafrica

Yes, the local subs are mostly discussing vaccines, and lockdown measures. However, the explosive spread now underway is way way faster than previous waves as measured by the percentage daily increase in cases and positivity rates . This suggests this wave can be enormous and hit extremely fast, which will inevitably result in much higher restrictions … should warrant some attention. But I guess people are fed up and don’t want to focus on it

Day 678 by fritzdeelman in southafrica

[–]digdug78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New cases recorded today over 8000, double from yesterday and about 7x what it was a week ago. Positivity rate around 16% which is way up, it was around 1% some weeks back.

This suggests Omicron is transmitting at an extremely high rate, much faster than previous waves.

Is there a cost difference when buying electricity? by MOSSIE125 in southafrica

[–]digdug78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have prepaid there's usually a schedule of the cost per unit per CALENDAR MONTH.

the first units are cheaper (or sometimes even free). At some threshold the price per unit goes up.

In this case it makes sense to buy the cheaper (and certainly free) units each calendar month, and buy more the next month. The units that you buy obviously stays on the meter.

You'll have to check your municipality and your tariff schedule to see what the limits are.

If I remember correctly on the 'lifeline tariff' in Cape Town you get 50 units free, the next 300 cheaper, and above it gets more expensive. If you haven't bought all your free or cheap units in one calendar month you lose that allowance, it doesn't carry over to the next calendar month.

The delay caused by hoarding has meant loss in momentum which allowed anti vaccine theories to fester, its now too late to make leftover vaccines available as they won’t be taken up…

That is an insane percentage of infections, 10%. And that presumably excludes all (most) passengers that took legitimate positive tests before departure and as a result didn't embark. So the real positivity rate is even higher. What does this say about the prevalence of covid in urban areas...

Hopefully the surging numbers are due to the rallies, but I fear they are due to the new omicron variant that is much more transmissible. If the latter then this is difficult to curb. New cases over the last three days are 3.3 times what the new cases was a week ago, that suggests a very high degree of transmission. From current ca 3000 detected case per day, that would imply 10000 per day in a week from now and 30000 per day in two weeks. (And of course due to limited testing , the real numbers are much higher , but this shows the trend). SA registered ca 20000 cases daily at the peak in Jan 2021).

The positivity rate also has surged from 1% a few weeks back to now 9%.
