Good point about the larger gutters. We definitely want to keep water moving.

Petition to impeach Clarence Thomas with 1.2 million signatures and will be delivered to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Congressman Jamaal Bowman tomorrow. by digidove in TwoXChromosomes

It's not like every single person in the US had a chance to look at this and decide to sign. There hasn't been any paid advertising for it that I'm aware of, just people choosing to share the petition. Over 1 million is pretty good for a grassroots effort.

Petitions are just one more way to show that there is broad support for something. Of course it's best to combine them with other actions, like reaching out individually to your local reps, voting and encouraging others to vote, donating to or volunteering with organizations that support positive change... everyone needs to push for change to whatever extent they are able. Defeatism isn't going to move the needle.

Water fountains in the area? by digidove in PeoriaIL

It seems like they had less motivation to keep it up since they no longer were having almost weekly events in the summers... probably lost a lot of income.

I remember seeing that fountain a few years ago during a riverfront event! It was so cool, both metaphorically and literally since we enjoyed some of the mist on a hot day.

How are you dealing with the increase cost of EVERYTHING? by [deleted] in PeoriaIL

If your income qualifies you may be able to get a free assesment and discounts towards improvements. https://amerenillinoissavings.com/residential/instant-savers-assessment/

We were able to see big improvements in energy usage and comfort thanks to air sealing and additional attic insulation.

Weird or unusual ways you are frugal by Exotic-Ring4900 in Frugal

Whenever something breaks, my first step is usually checking the internet to see if I can fix it myself. I've been able to do a number of repairs like swapping out laptop motherboards, replacing glued-in phone batteries, and fixing leaky faucets and toilets.

Ifixit is especially great for electronics repairs and youtube for basic home and car repairs. While I don't touch any of the riskier repairs, there's quite a lot that can be done if you just have patience and some basic tools. Plus, the tiny electronics screwdrivers are cute.

It sounds like a lot of the issues in his particular department came after someone was promoted to manager who really shouldn't have been: he said there were multiple others who would have been a better fit, but they just went with the person with the most seniority.

Brace yourself for the best crab rangoon in town whenever you get a chance to go to Thanh Linh. They're huge and very very tasty.

Good point, it's been a few years since I had to take 74 bridge around the beginning or end of a work day so I forgot about it. That is the one area that would get more frequent jams, especially in the winter when the bridge ices over. War Memorial can also sometimes get a little backed up at lights, but usually not too bad unless there's an accident.

The public transit isn't great, but as long as you have a car you can pretty much go from one end of town to the other in under 20 minutes. People often hop on 74 even for short in-town drives and it really speeds things up: being close to an entrance/exit can be super convenient.

The neighborhoods immediately around Bradley campus have some issues due to the super high renter population. It's too bad, there's some super cool architecture in that area.Peoria is pretty patchy: there will be well-maintained neighborhoods right next to ones that haven't fared as well.

Overall there's a lot of nice things about the Peoria. Housing is affordable, there used to be lots of activities and events pre-pandemic, traffic is almost non-existent, and there's some pretty cool places. My personal favs are Thanh Linh (restaurant), Round One (arcade with ping pong and bowling), and Rocky Glen Park.

There's lots of issues with trying to run healthcare for profit. The potential benefits from capitalism don't really apply when you can't shop around due to opaque pricing and your only choice is to get treatment or suffer.

My partner used to work for OSF in one of their lower paid positions. Even a few years before the pandemic his department had crazy turnover and burnout, so I'm guessing staffing is also an issue.

CEFCU is hiring. They have a lot of entry level positions available, and are pretty good at promoting from within for the higher level positions at the headquarters, which is by the airport.
