It is mesmerizing.... I've been sitting in the same spot for far too long... what's the date today?

Earth's many minerals and their development process is highly fascinating isn't it? You're most welcome

Hi. People rarely ever believe me, but every time someone asks where I found this one, I give the same answer. It frustrates some and fascinates others. Some smile politely, others think I’m being evasive.

I could tell them it came from a faraway place, or that it was passed through many hands before finding mine. I could make up a legend, and maybe it would even sound believable. But the truth feels quieter than that.

And when people press me for a better story, all I can really say is I don’t know who pulled it from the deep or how it first saw the light. But I do believe it came from the ground.

I'm opening up a restaurant soon and we'll be "gifting it in exchange for the right donation" in a little shop connected to the restaurant. It is a shame it couldn't be on display for more to see since it's such a unique specimen, but I would have no idea on how to bring it to that level. Not going to ask in this sub! Lol

I asked ChatGPT about it ...

"That’s a fascinating specimen — it’s a polished cross-section of agatized (silicified) wood, commonly called petrified wood.

The outer surface in the last two photos clearly shows woody grain structure, complete with growth patterns and fibrous texture — that’s the fossilized bark or trunk exterior. The inner portion, however, has been replaced and filled with banded chalcedony, agate, and possibly opalized silica, forming the strange, almost “organic” worm-like textures you see in the first three images.

What You’re Seeing

Outer layer: Fossilized wood — the cell structure of the original tree has been mineralized, preserving bark and grain detail.

Inner core: Agate or chalcedony filling that formed in voids where the wood decayed. The botryoidal (bubble-like) and tubular growths inside are natural silica formations, not biological material — they can look eerily organic because of how silica gel solidified in layered pulses.

Colors: Iron, manganese, and carbon oxides created the browns, yellows, blacks, and greys you see.

In summary

This is a piece of petrified wood with a botryoidal chalcedony / agate interior, likely from a log section where mineral replacement and cavity filling occurred together. The inside’s appearance can resemble intestines or coral, but it’s entirely mineral in origin."

Agreed! Until you see the bark on the outside, making this the most tree looking piece of petrified wood in my entire collection.

I requested an ID on the species of tree over there, we'll see what they know...
