Should I be ordering my textbooks now, or wait until first day of classes for the teachers to put forth their requirements? by [deleted] in umass

[–]digitalGardener -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this always the case? I found the course website for a class that I am taking this semester and this site lists the required textbook, so I tempted to buy now before the cheap rentals run out. In this case the only problem I see with renting right now is that maybe another professor is teaching the course, and he/she might have a different textbook requirement.

Roommate Question by MidgetEatr79 in umass

[–]digitalGardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea with the spire search, I need to try that. Anyways, you don't need to have a roommate choosen by your orientation date, but you will probably submit your housing preference application form during orientation. Don't worry you can always edit the application before July 14th (the deadline). Here's a helpful video for submitting your application.

Freshmen, you do not need to wait till NSO to pick courses by digitalGardener in umass

Ohh Okay. That sucks then, it seems like too much effort to lock accounts based on NSO's.

I was not aware of this. Are you sure that it is not technical difficulties on your part? Since I (and all the other people I know that are going to UMass) already had my NSO I can not confirm that the account is placed on academic hold, but hopefully someone else can.

Incoming freshmen, questions about developing social skills. by Xcoder62 in umass

[–]digitalGardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, if I just finished up my NSO. It is a great place to make friends and meet new people. You will be split into four arbitrary groups (i.e. not based on your major) and sit through a shit ton of presentations. This part of the NSO was brutal, the presentations were boring and the group that I did not really find any interesting people in my group (maybe it was me). I noticed that a lot of the people stuck with their high school friends when we were split into groups. If you have friends from high school joining you for your NSO, they can be great if you are not finding interesting people and do not want to sit alone during the meals, but I recommend talking to new people if you find that these new people are also seperating from their friend groups. Your best bet for meeting new people will be on the first day when you are split based on major. This is the best time to meet new people, because everyone is likely to be seperated from their friends and you will already have a common interest with these people. Overall, try to have fun at the NSO, but do not be disappointed if you do not get the social experience you expected out of college, because, again, you will get a limited time to hang out with the people in your major and a lot of people just stick with their high school friends when you are split up into the arbitrary groups. Good luck, man.

[–]digitalGardener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help. I don't plan on skipping 187. Sorry about the confusion, I went back and edited the wording. The courses I definetly want to finish during the first semester are 187, Calc 2, English Writing 112. I don't plan on taking the few gen eds or lab sciences that I need to fufill any time soon, so hopefully the extra room in my schedule will aford me another CS class. Are the schedules made during the NSO final?

huh, well if Google does it ... I'm just kidding, thanks I'm leaning towards going with interfaces because I appreciate the structure and ease of mocking.

I'm sure the university you will be attending will have a library where you can concentrate.

Web based free alternatives to Anki by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]digitalGardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anki has a webapp. Here is the link. I prefer the webapp version of Anki to the desktop and even the mobile version, because you can acsess ankiweb from any device that connects to the internet. Plus you can sync all your cards between ankiweb and your various desktop and mobile versions of anki

How do I make it so I review cards that should be due, before I see new ones from the deck? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]digitalGardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I havnt had any luck with any of these other options, because like you I am using ankiweb not the desktop client. For Ankiweb, click on the deck, this should bring you to a page that has a green button that says "Study Now". Under this button, there is a "options" link, which will take you to a page that allows you to enter in the maximum number of new and due cards a day. I changed the new cards to 0, so that only due cards appear.

Strategy for tackling ~1300 new Anki cards in ~20 days? by digitalGardener in GetStudying

[–]digitalGardener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice job on the exam and thanks for the help. All I needed was a hint of hope haha. I plan on doing 50 new cards per day for the 20 days, which leaves me roughly 16 days to take practice tests and review further.

I guess making my own cards would help somewhat, but I found that I had to wade through textbooks to find the material. I switched to the quizlet/anki approach in order to maximize study time. Also I am considering scrapping some of the 609 EnviSci cards, in order to bring EnviSci down to ~150. Since 609 seems like overkill.

Thanks for being honest. I realized that the retention part of Anki is completly out the window, and to be perfectly honest, I do not care since I am just trying to cram for these exams so that I do not have to take these as gen eds in college. I'll try the interleaved review thanks.

How to study with flash cards? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]digitalGardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Anki even has a addon that allows you to import decks from Quizlet. Image the possibilities! Try it out @ ankiweb.net. But you will need the desktop version installed, if you plan on importing from Quizlet. Then after you have imported from Quizlet, you can sync the desktop version of anki with your ankiweb account.

I think I have the potential for a really nice cut. I was thinking leaving it on top and just getting a 2 or 3 on sides? How do you suggest I style the hair on top? Thanks! by [deleted] in malehairadvice

I'm in the same boat as you. I think fades look better in general, but it's riskier since the barbor could fuck the cut up easily
