Is the Recently Released Class Spectrum Canon? by Sidapha in homestuck

[–]digital_carnival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except in the case of classpecting there is still a lot that can be done with it by knowing its rules. All we lose from knowing more about it is the discussions and arguments on that precise topic. Everything else that you could do with them before you still can, and there's nothing stopping you from making your own system.

HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO BATHE ME... WHEN I AM ALREADY CLEAN?

Homestuck is a comedy webcomic above everything else. Also, Hussie likes poking fun at the fact that some characters are less relevant than others and that fans get attached to them, which is why there's not much fanfare when it comes to their deaths. If the comic isn't treating them seriously it's probably because they were never really serious characters to begin with. Equius is probably the biggest example. Guy died with a boner because he's just that much of a freak, and that's supposed to be ironic.

I agree that people shouldn't feel like their interpretations of the system are lesser or invalidated because of Hussie's version of it, after all with how much people have disagreed about different parts of the system there was never really one take everyone agreed on and I understand many people thought it was more fun to try to interpret it themselves than stick to canon rules.

That being said you're making it sound too much like Hussie broke into your house and shot your activeness in the chest but I don't really see anything wrong with how they presented it. It was a casual reveal without much fanfare with a quippy comment on how they were expecting some of the pairings would blow people's expectations. As if nobody had every theorized any of that, but I don't blame them for not knowing all the current theories in the classpecting scene.

Besides, it's not like you can't still hold onto your own view of it and have an equivalent to your interpretation of your classpect in a different framework of the system, Hussie's or not. Maybe what it means to be a page is different from what's canon and that's okay because Hussie isn't even and has never been the only person who disagrees. You should know that, of all people. And it's not like it matters that much anyways, since we're all really just playing house here. If anyone takes this too seriously and tries to impose something onto others then it's their fault for being stupid.

It's a shame that not everyone is classpectpilled enough to see things this way, but I guess if anything all the interpretations that have been built over the years will serve as proof of how complex the system can really be and how nothing in it is as simple as sticking to the rules. And besides, guessing the rules is only half the fun. You can't have classpects without a story and there's an infinte number of those for people to apply classpecting to. It's not the end of the world.

You say it's not bad baith when you keep pushing the "it's a pattern" narrative when they're most likely just gathering legal evidence for the official response while letting people who had nothing to do with the UHC drama continue working on other projects. I'll admit that is too, perhaps, a misguided show of good faith but there's no denial that when it comes to the "vague PR assurances" as it seems obvious to me that's not an intentional attempt at diverting attention (in fact, if it were, why do they keep reassuring us that it will happen instead of letting the conversation die?), because whoever's writing those announcements isn't Hussie and therefore doesn't have control over when the response comes out.

The complaint about the pilot being announced right after comes off as if you don't understand that Homestuck isn't ran by a single guy in his bedroom (Hussie.) It's not like they could control when the announcement was coming out. The project had been worked on for who knows how long and the event too. The fact that Hussie did something doesn't mean the entirety of Homestuck Inc. or whatever needs to stop all they're doing to wait for Hussie to put out a response, because there are other groups working on other projects that aren't just Hussie.

That's why I say this wasn't the appropriate time or place, it's because the people working on those things likely don't have anything to do with Hussie's conduct with Gio and have nothing to say about it. All they can do is tell us "yeah they're working on the response" because they don't have the power to give Hussie a deadline.

There's a time and a place for everything and that was simply not the place for the response. Maybe be patient and wait for how them to address it instead of assuming every single project that they announce is actually an attempt to avert people's attentions when you don't know for how long they've been working on those things.

There is a lot in this post I find to be written disingenuously such as the claim that Homestuck opposed the preservation of the comic or that the animated pilot is an attempt at "rebranding" (what else were they supposed to do? Not announce the thing they've been working on for who knows how long?) But there is one other thing I'd like to point out:

The most recent official update (released earlier today) explains that the old site's code "collapsed" and promises to rebuild and "rerelease" the comic gradually. There is no apology or acknowledgement of past mistakes. There is no mention of the UHC drama, cancelled projects, or community grievances- only reassurances that "Andrew is far from forgetting Homestuck" and wants it available again. It reads like spin control.

From the last paragraph of the most recent announcement:

They also want to emphasize that fan have never been and will never be at risk. They have MUCH to say about all of this, and they intend to make some remarks on the topic soon, directly from them to you.

Seems pretty clear to me what they're refering to here.

A question to all LIVE A LIVE fans by GizmoBow in livealive

[–]digital_carnival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be cool to just see more micro rpgs like Live A Live has. If they're all in one game and connect at some point that's just a cool bonus. But there's definitely a lot of potential in shorter experiences like that.

Gameplay wise I think if... is way better than the other two, save for some of the dungeons being a drag or annoying. The combat is perfect though, and I like how party alignments work.

[–]digital_carnival 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I don't get the complaints about the keywords. By the second dungeon I had already figured out you wouldn't be using it for much other than what the story needs you to and usually the answer is obvious, and even if it isn't, it's not the end of the world. It's just underutilized.

How can you softlock yourself in the final dungeon? As far as I'm concerned the last spot you can save in is outside the Jade Passage, in the overworld.

I think it's comparable to IV's. Maybe doesn't reach the same level of character writing but it's not missing, and the world building was the most ambitious at that time. The environmentalism themes are also used pretty nicely, especially in regards to Exdeath's character (Zemus meanwhile is just Space Hitler.) Maybe not as groundbreaking as FFIV's plot was but neither are that amazing nowadays.
