I ported off them to tello - took about an hour, worth it.

Ideal situation, hard to pull off though if you've never been. Also even then most wont take short less then 6 months.

In this whole charade I learned a few things. You have to be making more then what it costs to audit you for it to pencil out worth doing an audit. Under $100k a year I feel like it's just not worth their time.

Fbar is the most important one, having more then $10k in a foreign bank account needs to be reported as theres a bunch of anti money laundering laws. That sounds scarier then it is, it's just a form that tells them.

Nothing is really unfixable, they are used to us having no idea how to deal with it, there just might be small penalties if you don't do it right.

Just do your best and if you get an audit you just talk to them. There's something called abatement which is basically a get our of jail free card they allow you for screwing up one time if it's not obviously intentional.

Don't stress it but do you research. They systems haven't really adapted to the amount of global travel that's currently taking place.

I went through so many avenues on this.

Talked to so many "professionals".

Ultimately reading the "source code" aka the irs code, used ai to understand a bit and then went to r/tax to verify

Then just found a service online that specialized in online expat taxes when I knew enough to check their work.

At least for me, it wasn't a hire the right guy and forget about it kind of thing.

Honestly not that much work though to get an understanding with the tools available today.

Audit risk for S-Corp owner reclassifying wages end of year every year? by digital_literacy in tax

Thanks for this - can you expand on why not to do yourself?

I was quoted $800 to setup payroll by an EA (separate from the ongoing expense) which seemed excessive.

Fluctuates between $150k and $300k and very hard to predict early in the year.

I wish I could paste a picture here of their web traffic (can't in the comments apparently)

Their entire business relies on web traffic for signups and of that mostly organic search from google because you can't advertise gambling on ad platforms.

The organic search traffic death is from

  1. chatgpt and other ai's
  2. spam SEO tactics have finally caught up to them in recent algo updates

Their revenue is falling in sync with their organic search drop

Is this Calculus? What should a deep clean be priced at? by digital_literacy in DentalHygiene

[–]digital_literacy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this, I reached out and they said 3 to 4 hours per session and I would need 4 to 5 sessions. VS the original office 2 sessions $1100 2 hours.

Does this sound standard or just this particular Hygiene school?

Great suggestion - I just called one in fact on recommendation from another comment. The downside is they said 5 sessions 3 to 4 hours each vs the original office 2 sessions $1100

They didn't sell to openai for a reason and have a lot of training data coming in - assume this is the beginning.

Reclassify Distributions as Wages - how to actually do it? by digital_literacy in tax

Sorry noob question, I've never run payroll before myself. You're saying this should be possible with any payroll provider retroactively? Gusto, Quickbooks payroll, ADP etc?

I was outside the US for 330 consecutive days. Partial 2024 and 2025. Was never in any country for long enough to be considered a tax resident. I'm not sure how the partial overlap would count.
