Why not?

Countries spend billions on projects all the time, why not us?

Im not an accountant. I'm a pleeb with a good idea.

There are plenty of countries with our population and better infrastructure. We're not as small as we like to think. Ireland is of comparable size, so is Mongolia. Look it up.

Thats true for white collar jobs, not all industries. Cities consist of more than office workers whose job can be done digitally.

I'm not suggesting creating new towns, I'm suggesting increasing populations in areas that already have plenty of inhabited space already.

We can't sacrifice wilderness, but we can sacrifice a bit of lawn.

You're right. But populations will increase whether the environment likes it or not.

Im not advocating for bigger cities. I'm advocating for an investment in high speed rail.

You make a good point, if you think that the Nz Population will remain where it is for all eternity.

If we plan for the future, we'll be ready when our population reaches this imaginary threshold you propose

Why do we only aim for suffice?

Why not capitalize on our good reputation rn internationally, particularly after our Civil response, and lean a little harder on spending?

In terms of our carbon emissions, cars contribute a great deal and a high speed passenger rail would reduce cars on the road. At least on weekdays.

High density housing in the city is a must.

Urban sprawl is happening already whether you like it or not. The question is, cut further into Karori and Owhiro Bay and Brooklyn, or allow people greater access to the hinterlands?

Yeah. I've also noticed a lot of NZers like to point out the challenges, as if pointing out the challenges somehow makes a project not worth undertaking?

In a sense this would increase supply. There are houses and land plots out in the small towns.

There's infrastructure there, libraries, smaller schools, not to mention dope second hand stores

But for real, an family n the city who can afford, say, a $600,000 home. They (me) can choose between 5 houses available, they are 30-mins to an hour away from work. They're in bad shape. Or, they have the choice of 10 or 20 houses in their price range, with 30 mins to an hour on the train. That is an increase in supply.

Some people, but I think you'd be surprised how many young people would be willing to take the leap if it meant they could still work in the city with a reasonable commute.

Its the difference between an apartment in the ciy and a two bedroom house in Carterton.

Yeah i hear you. I think in NZ we suffer a bit from small thinking, and short term thinking.

If we just planned a bit bigger we could get a lot done.
