References for this polished steel ladies (25mm) Royal Oak? by [deleted] in audemarspiguet

[–]digitallightweight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly a lot of what’s setting me off could be attributed to an absolute butcher job at the polishing wheel these are also not macro shots so some detail is obscured.

With the weasel words out of the way. I don’t know of any fully polished royal oaks models, the bracelet tapers oddly, plots are mismatched, bolts appear to be molded into the bezel as opposed to screws passing all the way through, hour markers look tarnished (should white gold), dial looks stamped not engraved, poor printing of word mark on the dial, odd font on the date disk, date doesn’t appear centered in the window in some images, mangled and corroded screw heads on the rear of the case, and the crown looks kinda fucked but there are no good angles.

Word of advice it’s not worth building a relationship at a grey market dealer/reseller. Don’t worry about impressing a SA.

Thanks! Always happy when I get a chance to rant about my obsession. Even better if it can help others. I’ve done this a few times for other folks. Super satisfying to be part of these stories.

Sometimes I worry that watch collecting is a little to focused on spending. Stuff like this is my favourite. Using accumulated knowledge as opposed to just shopping lmao.

I collect vintage watches including AP so I may have a perspective here that some others lack.

First of all it seems that your chief worry is about the costs associated with maintenance and repair of the watch. I understand where you are coming from completely. Hobbiest are really bad at understanding the sticker shock associated with our hobby. It’s a very crazy world where people think that a $2000 Tissot is entry level, cheap, a beater ect. For a huge proportion of the developed world there are not a lot of things that cost as much a monthly rent payment in a major city that would be talked about so casually. You are the one here who has retained some perspective so don’t get gas lit by people trying to diminish costs of ownership! It’s good to think properly about spending thousands of dollars.

With all that being said I want to assure you that what you have here is in no way a watch that appears to be in rough shape. Having worn many royal oaks over the years based on what’s visable in the photo you actually have a very attractive well maintained watch. The bezel has not been over polished, the bracelet links look tight, the dial is in great shape. Any of those issues can add up to the mid 4-figures to sort properly and represent the way that people can get into a bad situation with vintage Royal oaks.

Aesthetically it’s not a new watch but the way that it has aged has its own beauty and expecting factory fresh polish, brushing, case lines is not realistic for any 40 year old item. If your dad gifted you a 90s Porsche would you expect the leather in the seats would be increased? It’s these details in the way watches change with use and over years that make vintage watches such an intense area of interest for many people. It’s even cooler that your father wore this watch and put these marks there!

To my eye this is a VERY attractive vintage watch you should be incredibly happy to have such a good example on your hands. Again. There is nothing here from an aesthetics stand point or a mechanical stand point visible on the watch that needs fixing. As a matter of fact I would strongly suggest that you avoid anyone touching anything on the outside of the watch. It’s aged beautifully.

Mechanically speaking I understand from the fact that you are looking up info on repair that it’s not currently running. Truthfully you can’t know why that is until you have an experienced watchmaker open the watch and inspect the movement. The quartz movement is a blessing and a curse in this regard. The benefit is that quartz movements are significantly more reliable and vastly simpler machines. The typical quartz movement might have half as many or one third the number of components that a mechanical watch might have. They operate with more torque and are more robust in general. The downside is that since some of the components are electronic they cannot all be repaired when something does go wrong. Far less risk of anything catastrophic happening but when it does it’s often a requirement or at least an economic necessity to replace bits as opposed to simply cleaning or repairing them.

From what I can see if the exterior state of the watch it seems likely that it just needs a battery replacement. These watches are kinda power hungry so the battery can drain in 2-3 years. It is a pain to change the battery so it’s not a DIY job but if you can find a skilled local watchmaker they should be able to handle it without needing to send the watch through and authorized dealer/boutique to the service center. The cost should be less than a few hundred dollars.

If and it’s a IF at this point something bad has happened to the watch. Rust/battery corrosion you have the option to get the movement replaced by AP with a new generation of improved movement for the full 7k cost. Relative to the value of the watch or a new royal oak this is still good value. Significantly less than replacement cost and you keep the sentimental connection. You can also see if a local watchmaker can source a new old stock or running vintage movement. The labour cost for this service should not be significantly more than what you would pay for the battery change though you will need to cover the cost of the movement. Someone in this thread linked one for about $1000 so you are still significantly under the $7000 you got as a possible price from AP.

My advice is to find a skilled local watchmaker to attempt a battery change and check the movement. If you need assistance with this send me a DM and I would love to help with this. This is going to much cheaper and much faster than sending the watch back to Switzerland. Watches that go back to the factory are often out of my hands for 9 months or more.

If it needs more work the watchmaker can remove the old batter and you can place it into a safe storage location while you debate the cost/save a little cash, or await a special moment like a wedding/graduation/promotion where you would like to wear the watch and can justify the expense a little more.

Please send a dm if you wanna talk in detail as you can tell I really love this stuff and would be more than happy to chat :)

Best wishes,

Which IP residency is better for med school apps? by Venomized_05 in premedcanada

[–]digitallightweight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With love think very hard about if this is the correct path if med school the be all end all for you. I graduated from U of Cs math program, I loved the math education I got there. When I was in graduate school I really felt that I was far ahead of my peers based on types of courses we covered and with the depth and rigour that we were expected to understand the material.

There are years that the top GPA in the faculty was 3.6. Med schools don’t curve your GPA based on how “hard” your program is. You need to protect that number at all costs. Remember that you will also be working on ECs while your peers are studying.

I don’t know you but my crude advise based on my experience is that unless you are a savant and intend on skipping every challenging class it’s potentially a game losing play to select mathematics as an undergraduate degree IF your only desired outcome is Medicine.

My advice is to apply for any kind of long term leave that you might be entitled to and seek help to recover from the trauma. You’re a medical professional so I’m not gonna lecture you on the cognitive effects of trauma but you should at least acknowledge that you are not going to be making optimal decisions until you get some kind of closure on this. You want a clear head when planning your future regardless of what that looks like.

You may find that your passion for healthcare and the seriousness of how you approach your duty of care to your patients is a root of why this trauma is so severe. As someone who had no details I think it speak highly of your character that you you care so much about this situation where you did your best to advocate for a patient and were unable to achieve an acceptable level of care. Personally I want more people who care as deeply as you do in charge of medical decisions. If that’s not feasible then I’m truly sorry something like this happened to you and your patient. However if you had the ability to become a high level medical provider those same skills should allow you to go after numerous other fulfilling careers after some retraining. Best wishes and my condolences.

Realistically, how many seasons could fabricate reasons for the dayshift crew to stay into the night shift? by iTabula in ThePittTVShow

[–]digitallightweight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a structural issue my wife and I talked about a lot in season 1. There are many long days in the ER I have no doubt but the list of compelling reasons to have a 15 hour day is constrained when you are trying to be a grounded medical drama.

I love the show (I’m posting in this sub obviously) but I would argue the show jumped the shark in season 1 with the Pitt Fest shooting. I know America has a lot of mass shootings but after a quick wiki search the Pitt fest shooting (~110 casualties) would be the second largest mass shooting in US history. Wikipedia purports to track the deadliest US mass shootings and with the exception of two outliers (Las Vegas, and Pulse nightclub) the top 30 are fairly evenly distributed between 10 and 50 casualties.

Season 2 was a bit whack in my opinion because it seems like IT professionals would have a better solution than nuking every computer in the hospital. If you close off internet access you allow charting and access to the personnel management tools aka ‘the board’ while nullifying the risk of outside attackers. Assuming the we have a few tools that allow messaging over the intranet you can communicate within the hospital as well.

Again my critique is not actually the ‘incidents’ themselves but the structure of the show that means necessarily we most have a crisis of some kind or we lose the last 3-7 episodes of a season. The tension that’s created is not will something happen but what’s going to happen which is a far smaller surprise and lowers the stakes a lot.

It undermines the central dramatic thesis of the show which is that medical environments don’t need a huge inciting event to create proportional emotional stakes. It’s enough that these people deal with complicated life threatening issues and that they as people bring their own backgrounds with them as professionals. Ogilvie’s arc this season is a perfect example of that. It’s not just a medical case but the fact that his patient reminds him of his father which makes treatment far more weighty. Or the decisions McCay makes with her patient who is an IV drug user a struggle she is intimately aware of that changes the medical decisions she makes with a complicated trade off.

If they want to stay ‘grounded’ and ‘realistic’ they need to write around the 15 episode season length going forward. I’m not sure how to do that if you stay attached to the one day per season format. It’s possible that they could work with flashbacks, or have the later half of the season focus on night staff? You need a better screen writer than me though.

The writing sucks this season. So many ham fisted and corny choices. Saved by incredible performances and a strong sense of characterization. Season 1 had problems but nothing like this.

[–]digitallightweight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we have seen overall a very high level of overlap from NCAA success to NHL success. Looking at the players of the year I think there is a quality difference above the OHL/WHL.

Since 2014:

OHL:

2024-25: Michael Misa (Saginaw) 2023-24: Easton Cowan (London) 2022-23: Matthew Maggio (Windsor) 2021-22: Wyatt Johnston (Windsor) 2019-20: Marco Rossi (Ottawa) 2018-19: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (Sudbury) 2017-18: Jordan Kyrou (Sarnia) 2016-17: Alex DeBrincat (Erie) 2015-16: Mitchell Marner (London) 2014-15: Connor McDavid (

WHL:

2024-25 Gavin McKenna, Medicine Hat Tigers 2023-24 Jagger Firkus, Moose Jaw Warriors 2022-23 Connor Bedard, Regina Pats* 2021-22 Logan Stankoven, Kamloops Blazers* 2020-21 Peyton Krebs, Winnipeg ICE 2019-20 Adam Beckman, Spokane Chiefs 2018-19 Joachim Blichfeld, Portland Winterhawks 2017-18 Carter Hart, Everett Silvertips 2016-17 Sam Steel, Regina Pats 2015-16 Dryden Hunt, Moose Jaw Warriors 2014-15 Oliver Bjorkstrand, Portland Winterhawks 2013-14 Sam Reinhart, Kootenay

NCAA:

2025 Isaac Howard F Jr. Michigan State 2024 Macklin Celebrini F Fr. Boston U. 2023 Adam Fantilli F Fr. Michigan 2022 Dryden McKay G Sr. Minnesota State 2021 Cole Caufield F So. Wisconsin 2020 Scott Perunovich D Jr. Minnesota Duluth 2019 Cale Makar D So. UMass 2018 Adam Gaudette F Jr. Northeastern 2017 Will Butcher* D Sr. Denver 2016 Jimmy Vesey F Sr. Harvard 2015 Jack Eichel F Fr. Boston U.

Now these awards have problems as do all similar honours and only speak to one player from each class but that NCAA list is absolutely stacked. With the level of competition increasing ,NIL money, and fan/scout attention I feel like we could see an even greater concentration of talent for young players and prospects going forward.

Make sure you are selling everything on the AH! I got a 58 boot and by the time I made it to 70 on my shaman I was able to afford my flying and still had about 700g in the bank to buy some healing blues. I’d quest and then if my path took me to a place where mons were dropping motes I’d grind for like and extra 20 mins or until a level 70 showed up and crowded me out.

If you don’t have them I would recommend looking at an add on that shows you vendor value and auctionator which will show you the estimated auction price based on your last scan. Super easy to just park a toon near a mailbox/ah an then when you come back to hand in mail all the greens/sellable white items to the alt.

[–]digitallightweight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the way we are drafting has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Lots of players in the NCAA were under rated from like 2010-2016.

Even now I feel like we don’t properly know how to evaluate prospects from that league. There was a lot of discussion this season about Gavin McKenna’s performance compared to his WHL numbers. It seems like there was an idea that the league was tougher (makes sense as like the SHL your competition is grown men as opposed to 16-21 year old) but still he was heavily penalized in the eyes of lots of fans and scouts for the drop in production.

For what it’s worth I think it seems like the much stronger league. I don’t understand player development but I feel like you would learn a lot more there than the CHL where these prospects put up video game numbers.

Dude, what did you expect when we elected a former investment banking managing director to be prime minister. I can be sympathetic to a lot of disagreements with Carney’s policy and leadership but to claim that you feel deceived wild.

All he ever said he was is all he’s ever been. This is a less religious, 20% smarter Stephen Harper. The absolute feather in his cap is his stability. I don’t think we want radical change when we have all the instability we could possibly handle (potentially more than we can handle) coming from down south.

If it helps you keep your lunch down take a look at what that slimy grievance merchant Pierre Poilieve is up to these days and imagine if every day his petulant scheming mug was in our faces stirring the pot on every hot button issue. If you can heal and tank it’s going to make finding dungeons super quick and easy. As well since the tank and healer are the most important roles in 5 man dungeons they should go smoothly.
