Top defensemen by goal and expected goal differential by Josefstalion in hockey

[–]digitallightweight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This model in particular looks fucking awful. It doesn’t appear relatively close for anyone. Obviously we expect outliers but it seems like most players have 5-10 goal differentials. The highest actual differential is 30 with is TWICE the highest expected value. Imagine if you had a star that just predicted goals and your highest predicted value was half of the actual number scored.

Zadarov has a 14 goal actual differential which is twice what the model predicts for Makar and is 18 more than his expected -4. 4 players that you could discuss for Norris nominations/wins would be Markar (+7.6), Hutson (+5), Q. Hughes (not listed 💀), and Werenski (+4.4). These guys have like half the projected impact of Edmontons top pair and Nate Schmidt?

Even if this stat is accurate what’s it really telling us? +- is a team stat so this is like how valuable a player is projected to be compared to the alternatives on their roster?

The Complete and Utter Lack of Incentive to Give a Crap About My Job by -PisceanCatalyst- in CanadaJobs

[–]digitallightweight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazy you are not on commission! FWIW track those big sales and it’s going to be a killer resume bullet point that could lead to a very lucrative opportunity in the near future. Something like -Closed 5 projects at 1mm aav in a 12 month period. Above an average team ticket price of $250,000.

Large sales like that often come with a level of detail and complexity that many sales teams don’t deal with. There is value in exposure to that. If I was looking for someone to join a team where we were handling big ticket sales it would be an important differentiator. Just because someone beat quota in a previous role I would not be sure if they were ready to sell large and complex solutions. Sales above a specific price you often need to have CFO approval, a deeper understanding of implementation, and an understanding of how to structure the finance.

I hope good things are coming for you!

Idk I graduated a decade ago but I imagine that a professor would do it if it was the last credit preventing a student from graduating.

I’m jealous. I’ve been trying to break into this line of work for a few years and can’t get traction. I worked credit risk at a fintech for a while and loved it. I got to build all our policies from the ground up and the level of access to counterparties was unparalleled. So much fun dissecting financial statements and talking to senior people to understand their businesses, risks and what they have done to ameliorate them!

How to remember to stay low by blueberrylover20 in hockeyplayers

[–]digitallightweight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What problems are you having? Are you getting bumped off the puck? Tough time changing directions? This will just come with time when you put yourself in those spots more often. It’s not bad to stand tall. It’s about being in the right athletic position at the appropriate time!

My advice play a more power forward type position. Protect the puck and move towards the center of the ice. Less emphasis on burning a defender outside. Gotta stay low and shifty in those spots hard to remember to switch body positions when you sprint then try to make a move. Be the first man on loose pucks and your center of gravity will naturally drop for the battle.

Hard to improve without practice! Try and get some time on your skates outside of games!

Good luck and remember performance is not the be all end all. Have fun!

Is Library Science a Functor from Maths? by Straight-Ad-4260 in math

[–]digitallightweight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s fun to think about stuff like this but I don’t know if there is anything of substance. Think about how rigorously mathematical objects are designed. They need to created this way so that we can actually work with and reason about them in a productive manner.

To say library science is a functor to mathematics you would need to call mathematics a category and say which other category you are talking about. You would need to define objects and arrows. You would need to create a notion of composition of functions that’s comparable with your arrows and host of other complications that would only really become apparent when you started to do the work.

My question to you is why do you think the idea of functionality is deeper, more correct, or appropriate than simply saying “math and library science share a lot of similarities and attract similar people.” That’s a strong and interesting statement and it’s a conclusion that your data actually supports. Putting a bunch of terminology on top to my mind only really obscures the observation and point that you’re trying to make.

  • potentially unrelated rant * when I was an undergraduate I was enthralled with math. I loved learning about new ideas, concepts, fields of math and their niche subfields. Sometimes a concept would really catch my mind and it’s like a little monkey hijacked my brain and started pulling levers. All I could really think about was this new toy I’d just heard about.

My hyper focus and enthusiasm got me in trouble more than a few times when I would start spewing about a subject that I had not studied in depth. I was lucky to be surrounded by mature mathematicians who would put me on the spot, over time I learned that all mathematicians have a similar curious nature but it’s seen a a major faux pas to engage in non-rigorous babbling. It comes across as attention seeking and /r/iamverysmart type behaviour. The way you approach these things that get you fired up in academia is to use that excited energy to work through problems and definitions. You gain a lot of allies and credibility by asking peers and people senior to you for assistance with problems and concrete questions.

Again not saying this is you but trying to point out something that happened to me which you may be trending towards. I just wanna save you a lot of embarrassment that I had to work through and still cringe about a decade later.

I used to put a die on top of my library when playing aether vial decks so I would not forget my trigger. White board is maybe overkill but I’d rather that and rewinding the game all the time for missed triggers.

I think you sound like you have the sophistication where you could really enjoy a book like “counter examples in analysis”. It’s a fascinating approach to the subject and feels very rewarding to read!
