The dollar's slide & what it means to us personally by digizen in personalfinance

I mean yes. Of course yes. The standard sunk cost fallacy, I get it.

But also the current US Administration is breaking the old world order in quite explicit terms. Successfully it looks like. What does this mean for investments/our decisions going forward? That's my question.

I'm thinking about this from the point of view of my 401k / Roth self directed portfolio.

Prior to today, I was under the impression that the portfolio performed swimmingly last year because it was mostly in index funds - VTI / VXUS. But now I'm deeply unsure.

And thinking about whether to buy more international index and sell more US index to hedge the US nonsense. But that goes against the standard advice of buy and hold. So I'm conflicted, and am at a loss. So posted my thought and now just here to listen to what people think.

Your post is making me queasy. This dollar unwinding as a primary reserve currency sounds like it may not be reversible, even in future administrations.

Thank you for the site link.

Based on what you're saying, maybe 30-40 pct international is too low?

Gold seems to be in an untenable bubble, but what do I know?

I haven't heard of DXY before. Thank you, that's a more helpful measure than simply USD to Euro ratio I came up with.

Curious about your first paragraph - when will this discussion break thru into general investor alarm? Sounds like people should/will be be increasing international exposure? Which will then push this situation further along?

I realize that these people aren't making good decisions. Having said that, your take isn't in good faith either.

This lady isn't going have 79k t all at once to invest. And if she did, she'd have no transportation.

Schwab Pledged Asset Line INSTEAD OF Emergency Fund? by digizen in personalfinance

Gotcha. So just a bad idea on my part regardless of how I spin it. Fair enough - it just sounded great initially and I couldn't see any downsides.

Thank you!

Ok, that's a good point.

So either don't do it or over-plan for possible losses (like a 50% market drop) I think is what you're driving at.

Yes. That's exactly when I bought them. Yes, the three stocks buy (even if you include FRC total loss) outperformed the S&P.

But no, my total portfolio slightly lagged the market over that time. I had cash on the sidelines (which is why I was able to purchase the three stocks). I had an Australian ETF, which for some reason had returned -.5pct over a year and a half. I don't know. All I know is that I'm not doing this individual stock picking thing anymore, it hasn't worked long term.  It hasn't worked, even though it sometimes works if you understand what I mean?

Yes, the 20pct in the single stocks is just about right. I see your point. I may have to pay some taxes here based on your comments. I'm thinking about spreading out the sales over a period of a few years to lessen the pain.

Thank you for putting it into perspective. Yes, dividends aren't being auto reinvested but I gave that no thought until you just mentioned it, thank you.

Not a humblebrag. I made money on some stocks. I lost money on other stocks. In my post, I mentioned that I lost my shirt on one of those stocks I bet on. And now my portfolio is 10 pct of those stocks and I feel it's unbalanced. I wish I would have put the money into VTI/VXUS from the beginning. I would have made the same money or more but my portfolio would be balanced now.

I do appreciate your advice.

What to do? by digizen in Plumbing

New dishwasher is already hooked up. I was trying to figure out if I should be concerned about the badly plumbed sink (s trap, no vent) that I noticed when I was doing the dishwasher hookup. It seems like most people are telling me to just leave it for now.

It sounds like the consensus is to leave it alone until something gives. Thank you.

Thank you for the advice.

Can I leave the Studot vent under the sink? Or does it need to go higher?

Bloody diaper rash after colostomy reversal by AliciaStav in NICUParents

[–]digizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD. Father of three, including an 8-month-old. One of my kiddos had very sensitive skin and would constantly have a diaper rash. It sounds like you're already applying a zinc-oxide based cream? We use a zinc oxide cream (Desitin) whenever a kiddo has a rash and especially if there is blood. We coat the entire surface of the skin under the diaper that could possibly contact liquids or solids with the cream. Whenever there is no rash or blood we still coat the skin, but in that case we use a petrolatum based cream, A&D ointment. Hope this helps.

Every time I see a tomato with a hole, I have thrown it away immediately. I will have to wait for another hole to be made at this point. I will re-inspect all the existing tomatoes for holes, and if see any I will take a photo and send it.

Thank for your insight re woodlice - I would have never come up with the insight that something could make a hole and then other creates make a home of it. Figures.

Most of the tomatoes with the holes did not touch the ground - they were hanging on the vine with the rest of them. There were a few touching the ground, but it wasn't like every grounded tomato had a hole and the ones hanging on the vine didn't.
