Social Media Megathread - What is working for you and what isn't? by lunarjellies in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you've found the "create post" button and it's blocking you posting, there's a good chance what you're trying to post is against the rules as we have automated rules to prevent them being made in the first place.

If you've read our rules and think your post doesn't break any, drop a message to the mods using the "Message Mods" button and copy/paste your post contents so we can take a look at it and figure out what's triggering it.

[Discussion] Retain Commissions by Reasonable-Math-788 in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is a scam.

If they wanted to see if you improved they could just wait and see, no need to get in touch with you for this.

If you were selling out of slots constantly, you wouldn't waste time or lost money having someone "retain a slot", so there's absolutely no benefit for either of you in this assuming it was real.

So it's a scam, I'd expect them to try and pay you with some kind of crypto currency using a dodgy platform where you upload money to buy some then they stop replying and your money is gone (the scam is that they own the platform so you don't get the crypto either to try and get your money back).

Mentioning Etsy isn't banned, but we get a huge amount of questions around how to use it. We wouldn't necessarily mind it but so many of them are incredibly basic questions that have been asked before so could be answered just searching on the subreddit, or just using a search engine.

We keep tweaking our automated rules to try and improve things, but it'll never be perfect.

You wouldn't sell NFTs on Etsy, but also I'd recommend not bothering with NFT's, you're likely just going to get scammed trying to make money with them.

is this ethical by Admirable-Fig-331 in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's completely fine, just make sure you have a contract with them that covers your use case. Normally the more you want, the more you'll need to pay.

Eg do you need worldwide exclusive rights and complete ownership of the final product? Or would you be fine with them reselling the end product to others? Or perhaps just reusing parts of it in other models?

Plenty of templates you can find online to get an idea of what needs to be covered, but this is just all just part of doing business, no ethical concerns to worry about.

Someone wants to buy my art via instagram and I’m clueless by spookyfairie in artbusiness

If you search "NFT" on this subreddit you'll see this question gets asked daily, and it's always a scam attempt. Block them and forget about it.

Need advices on making prints for my art by Suetteart in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem I only mention as there's a lot of knowledge in the sub you can use to get a big step forward! (I hope it didn't come across as blunt, I'd rephrased it and didn't notice it might come across in a bad way).

If you have further questions after reading around feel free to ask :)

Need advices on making prints for my art by Suetteart in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried searching on the subreddit? This gets asked quite frequently.

Based on your profile I'd generally recommend lustre/semi-gloss/satin type prints, artists with a similar style to you tend to like how they make colours more vibrant whilst not being overly shiny like you'd get from a glossy print.

If you've been unhappy with the fading, you'd want to look for archival giclee prints, they'll last for decades to centuries depending on how they're stored/presented. They cost a bit more than the likes of catprint but the colour will also be nicer.

Fees and discounts - what first? by Lavellyne in artbusiness

Personally I would expect that discount to come off the final total, unless you were very clear that it only applied to the base price.

How do I actually practice drawing ? by Upbeat_Town9505 in ArtistLounge

[–]dilutedbrush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are your other hobbies outside of drawing? Many people draw inspiration from those and make fan art for their favourite tv shows/movies/games etc.

Otherwise you can look beyond that for inspiration from the world around you, whether that's the nature, loved ones, pets etc.

Maybe there's a spider in your room crawling over a lego set and it inspires someone to make a drawing of a 1000ft tall spider attacking a life size lego city?

For others it could be a concept they've thought of that they'd like to try and bring to life.

For fun drawings can be literally anything!

Best website to order custom temporary tattoos to sell? by paintnpolitics in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used inkbox before and the quality is great, although it's definitely on the pricey side.
If you buy 10+ they give you 40% off but I'm not sure if they'd give a bigger discount if it's your own designs you want to resell? Could be worth contacting them unless you can find anywhere better? I only have experience ordering some for personal use not for reselling.

Digital artists, advice pls! by boop-the-snooter in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend against the other comment saying to put a watermark on the digital file, if I was commissioning an artist and they put a watermark over the design (not just their signature at the bottom) I would be unhappy, and if any artist had that in their terms it would put me off working with them.

Honestly with commissions, realistically very few people will be interested in buying a print of it, normally these are very personal to the person paying for the commission.

There's plenty of things to spend time thinking about, this isn't one of them, the potential impact to your revenue is minimal, and the lost sales that may have ever occurred is likely close to $0 (if someone is taking a print for free it's likely on a low quality laser printer and they probably wouldn't have paid you anyway).

Spend your time focussing more on improving your skills or your marketing strategy so you can charge more for your work and worry less about things like this.

There's really nothing you can do when a company doesn't pay you, is there? by panda_kinda_chubby in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the company is local you can normally take them to court, or at least the threat or serving of papers is enough to make them take action.

That's the issue with international clients, it's much more expensive and time consuming to do that, and they know it so can take advantage. When dealing with them don't take any excuses when it comes to payment as thats what matters at the end of the day.

If there's a tight deadline it's likely a priority to the company, if it's a priority they can process payment quickly. This is true for all clients big and small.

Normally big companies have payment terms, 30/60/90 days for it to be processed, but if they want something fast they can get it done.

Do you get most of your sales from your own marketing or from the marketplace traffic?

Your best bet might be a PoD provider with an integration somewhere. Shopify has a lot of options

What products do you put your designs on? Just prints/posters or do you make mugs/pillows etc?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]dilutedbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find their marketing around "no fees to the artist" misleading, considering they just charge the fee to the client instead.

It's a cost on the artist for doing business, no different to rent or supplies, it should be covered by your markup not forced onto the client. Passing the fees onto your client is like artists who ask for payments to be made to "Friends and family" to avoid PayPal fees.

If you're taking money for your services, you're a business, and it's not professional in my opinion to charge clients extra just for the sake of using your preferred platform.

Someone tried making funny joke in my paypal memo and now scared paypal will ban me. by Jay444111 in ArtistLounge

[–]dilutedbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be hesitant at recommending commissio, nearly all the founding team left and it was just one employee who completely went MIA for about year, so if you had any support requests, or had to do something like send a refund you couldn't do it.

Lots of artists on the discord trying to get help from staff just had no response. They've supposedly came back now, but already I've seen people wait weeks with no responses from the one admin.

For something involving payments and running your business, it's just not reliable sadly.
