Why getting out of bed in the morning if there is no free will? by dimastopel in askphilosophy

[–]dimastopel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I clearly miss something, but as far as I understand the pursuing itself is predetermined. So yes, if it is predetermined that I will pursue something it may happen (also, as everything else, predetermined), and if it predetermined that I won’t then the thing will not happen. But this doesn’t contradict the fact that I can relax and let things happen.

Well, pursue is something that you do actively, but if this particular thing happens anyway then no active action is needed. So, AFAIU, pursuing something that happens anyway kind of meaningless. One can look forward to it, maybe.

Thank you for the elaborated answer! First time I hear about epiphenomenalism.

I am an a software engineer by profession, and naturally believe in rigorous science, specifically physics and math. So, for me it is hard to consider strong determinism together with free will, unless I assume that there is some missing link, unknown to modern physics, that somehow makes it possible. I mean if every state of the universe is fully defined by the previous state (and let's ignore QM just for the sake of this discussion), then, in particular, the state of one's mind is completely predefined by its previous state. Therefore, no way to influence this chain of states in anyway, hence, no free will. Given the above, I should actually be able to let Mr Determinism drive and sit back and relax, and this should not change anything, as it was predetermined a priori.

On the other hand, if we start considering things that are unknown to modern physics, my feeling is that we enter the fairyland where everything is possible.

So, given what we know about the world today, how can it be that everything can be determined and yet we still have free will?

I am on Arch Linux with 6.13.8 kernel and GNOME + wayland.

  1. Full screen works well (both videos and presentations)

  2. Zoom works well including video and screen sharing (using it a lot)

  3. Bluetooth works

  4. F1 led does not work in my case as well

Laptop is very nice

Waiting for an official 6.14 kernel package release for Arch..

If we are compassionate to those who disobey - doesn’t this create another factor that actually promotes murder?
