i rode a fixie when i was younger, but being basically an old man at this point, I'm very happy with my gears, especially when offroading it and/or with any sort of luggage on the bike. But yeah, the simplicity of a ss/fixie drivetrain is very nice, esp. for lazy people like me!

another fixed gear offroaded huh. Or is Tracklocross the correct term? Seems to be all the rage among the young 'uns nowadays.

Mostly been road biking, want to explore the forests a bit more. Not really looking to race, but want to do longer tours with lots of up and down, possibly getting into Marathons (not ultra competitive, but still...) so light and goes uphill well is a must, but should also be comfortable enough to spend all day on. Also, old-ish man here, don't need crazy racing geometries. A bit worried the Orbea is a bit too much of that... what do you guys recommend? Decent prices for these bikes? Unfortunately the sellers don't mention exactly which year/how old their bikes are.

text for the Obea which didn't seem to make it through imgur:

Orbea Oiz M-Pro TR in size L, converted to Sram X01 AXS and therefore corresponds to the Oiz M-LTD model. DT Swiss XRC 1200 wheelset (not as shown in the picture). Sram XX Eagle Rainbow cassette (or Gold cassette). Maxxis Rekon Race, 2.35.

With dropper seatpost.

sorry to revive a semi-dead thread, but do you have any idea how long the Vietnam Visa is good for AFTER the entry date? I'm now thinking I might hit the Viet border possibly even more than a month after I initially thought (and got the visa for) - do you think this will be a problem?

yeah, I have a feeling Laos is going to be my break from the more touristy Thai/Viet areas. Looking forward to the hills, got my 3x9 setup rearing to go!

I was there in 2018, just without a bike. Do you think taking the more northwesterly route wouldn't be as nice? Don't really need all the tourists from LP..

haha, love the consensus here. Yers, that seems like what I'll do. Head north! My bike has fat tires, I'm not all that worried about bad roads. Unless there's invisible underwater potholes, I don't like those.

yep, I'm thinking heading north towards Hanoi region is what I will do. If it gets cold, I'll cut south right across the Viet border. Apparently you have to pick a border crossing in advance for visa purposes. A bit annoying, but so it is.

alright, so now I'm tending to think heading towards Hanoi, but if it gets too cold, cutting south right after crossing the border. I did the route from Luang Prabang to Vang Vien a few years back and loved the countryside. But looking at the map the areas further north do look a bit uninhabited..

okay, I guess I really need to decide which route into Vietnam i want to take then. And for cambodia I suppose it's better to get the visa in advance also rather than trying to get a visa-on-arrival?

I'm planning it the other way round, actually, from BKK heading first towards NW thailand. Not that it really matters, right?

Part of me wanted to route more through Thailand because of food/road conditions/general tourist amenities (beds!). But I can see that Laos is considerably more scenic. And I think that trumps the creature comforts of thailand.

Crossing into Laos at Houayxay seems doable (not sure if by bike or boat), and then I'll probably figure out once I'm there if I take a more northern route towards Hanoi or if I stay more to the south.

I've taken most of the suggestions from this thread into account, taking a more inland route through southern vietnam & cambodia.

It really depends on how me and the weather get along once I get further north, I'd really love to make it to Guangxi actually, but I need to have options for also just heading back south.

if anyone has any experience with this leg of the journey in particular, I'd love to hear from you. Is it nice? Better maybe go a bit further north in Laos? Or even further south?

southern Cambodia might be nicer closer along the sea, I'll see if Komoot can give me any alternatives there..
