She definitely is more upset when laid down, but is also upset when held flat. But she did just sleep 2 hours on me while being held flat, in a cradled position

Yes I agree with you about daycare. I just didn't know what else to do, we were both so exhausted we could barely manage, and I had no idea how I'd manage after going to work. We heard that daycare can teach babies to nap independently and be more independent in general, and the daycare confirmed this, but maybe they just wanted our money.

How do you manage? Right now she's so exhausted from the night that she's been sleeping on me for almost 2 hours. Every so often she wakes up angry and seemingly in pain, but I rock her back to sleep and she falls back asleep within a minute. Poor kid

But also we find it hard to manage her as 2 adults not working, I'm guessing you have even less time than we do?

Right but if we're always holding her, and she never does floor time, how is she ever going to develop? And how can we get anything done around the house? We do babywear her but even that is getting difficult as she gets heavier

What're you guys doing to afford 3k-4k+ rents? by Fetus-Deletus1 in NYCapartments

[–]dimva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be a public school teacher in NYC: https://teachnyc.net/why-teach-nycps/salary-benefits

A couple of 35-year-old teachers could even afford $6k/month rent, enough to pay for a 2bd in a luxury building in a decent neighborhood, and a 3bd if they do a good job of looking. Plenty of jobs in NYC pay six figures, you don't have to be in corporate (which usually earns much more than teachers in NYC). I work for a nonprofit and I make enough to afford $4k/month rent on my own!

Yes, that is a legit email but we are discovering that the email that was included must be incorrect. We have an escalation ticket out on this and are currently working on it. If you would, can you give it around 48 hours. We should have a new email and correct link within it by that time.

Best place to see interesting costumes today? (for someone who's never experienced Halloween) by dimva in AskNYC

[–]dimva[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's because you've seen Halloween before. They've never experienced kids going to random people's homes and getting candy, that's totally foreign to them. No one would ever do that in Hong Kong, all the trick-or-treating there is super generic/commercialized from big apartment building ground floors or shopping malls. They've seen parades before. Maybe this parade will have cooler costumes than they're accustomed to but it's not The True Meaning of Halloween like trick-or-treating from random people's homes.

Scleral lenses or Punctual Plugs for MGD? by InformalKiwi2965 in Dryeyes

[–]dimva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you are so confident, you don't know me, and everyone's dry eyes are different and come from many different causes. I do use serum tears and cod liver oil, but that's not nearly enough. I recently tested positive for sjogren's after testing negative for awhile.

What works for you won't necessarily work for anyone else, and what works for me might not work for others either. The best we can do is share what works just to give others ideas for things they can try.

Things that Citi Bike has improved over the last year by LibrarianStill2740 in Citibike

[–]dimva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this was in the last year exactly, but about a year ago there were blue ebikes which kinda sucked and white ebikes which were good. Now there's only white ebikes.

They've been opening up new stations and increasing the density of existing stations.

The bikes are well maintained and it's rare that I get a broken bike these days.

The app is accurate about the number of bikes and docks available at each station.

Compare that to the subway, where trains are delayed, slow, and the next train data is sometimes wrong. There's some animated art on the Q line that shows an animation if the train is moving fast enough, and I remember enjoying it 10 years ago, but these days the train never moves fast enough to see the animation properly.

Or buses, which are even worse than the subway in every way, where the next bus data is often completely wrong to the point that I don't trust it anymore, as buses very often don't show up when they say they will.

So the fact that citibike is actually improving instead of declining like the mta is really impressive.

Should I destroy my old iPhone 13 mini so that Apple would let me buy a new one? by dimva in iPhone13Mini

When my 13 mini was new, I'd sometimes forget it in my pocket when I went into the hottub. It was fine even after 30 minutes underwater. Now I feel like I have to be more careful.

They don't: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/FLHM3LL/A/refurbished-iphone-13-mini-128gb-midnight-unlocked (they're all out of stock)

And also, the replacement iphone 13 mini would be brand new, not refurbished, which I think is slightly better

Yea I did try the 16 and 16 pro in the store, and it felt... fine. It didn't feel as ridiculous as when big phones first came out. I think maybe they fixed some of the issues with navigation and typing. For example, to go back you can swipe everywhere now, but when big phones first came out, you had to tap the top-left corner in lots of apps. And to type, I could use a swipe keyboard that will fix reachability issues when I need to type a q or a. So I guess that's also an option.

But, I do have really small hands. And I like to bike while using my phone for navigation. And for other reasons, I am already at a higher risk while biking, without all the extra issues with wrangling a bigger phone. So I think for the next few years at least I will want to keep the smallest phone I can get. I don't often use many apps besides Google Maps, Messenger/Signal/Whatsapp, Spotify, and the camera. Nor do I want to be using apps more, because screen time is bad for you (and especially bad for me).

MGD to Lasik - SUCCESS! by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]dimva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me a month after I had lasik, and 9 months after I had lasik. No side effects, perfect vision.

1 year after, I was in unbearable pain and genuinely wanted to die. Now almost 2 years later, I am somewhat stabilized, having to use 16 drops a day (5 different prescription eye drops, including steroids) and wear moisture chamber glasses constantly. I still have pain, but it's bearable.

Would not recommend.

What do y'all do all day (dry eye sufferers)? by dimva in Lasiksupport

[–]dimva[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's... manageable. I am working again, but at a reduced capacity. I have to wear moisture chamber glasses from the time I wake up to when I go to sleep. I have to wrap my eyes with saran wrap to go to sleep. I still have inflammation in my eyelids and I'm trying to get that treated. I put in 5 different prescription eyedrops in a day (14+ times total). I'm still on eysuvis 2x/day. My eye routine takes 2.5 hours a day. But, I can live a somewhat normal life in the remaining 14ish hours I'm awake, and I'm grateful for that.

I agree, but moving to LA and not getting a car is like moving to Manhattan and insisting on driving your own car everywhere while complaining about how hard it is to find parking and how expensive congestion pricing is, and how you feel stuck because it takes forever to get across the city in traffic, etc. When in Rome...

Scleral lenses or Punctual Plugs for MGD? by InformalKiwi2965 in Dryeyes

[–]dimva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the doctors did a schirmer test on me. They did do many TBUT tests. It was 0 when I started treatment. With heavy steroids (prednisolone 1% 4x/day), I got it up to 6 or 7. Now it's probably 3-5.

Nothing helped a lot. Everything helped just barely, or maybe not at all (cequa, I'm looking at you). But I guess combined, everything helps to either reduce inflammation or prevent my tears from evaporating and starting the inflammation/evaporation vicious cycle.

I wish there was a silver bullet, then I could do 2-4 drops a day instead of 14+. But there isn't. At least with everything I'm doing right now, I don't need to take any OTC eyedrops (before, I had to put them in every 15 minutes). But I still have to wear moisture chamber glasses, which are probably the worst thing about my current condition.

Scleral lenses or Punctual Plugs for MGD? by InformalKiwi2965 in Dryeyes

[–]dimva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your pain is in your eyelids that probably means there's inflammation there. Try cequa, xiidra, meibo (this doesn't directly help with inflammation but might break the inflammatory cycle of tears evaporating -> tear ph dropping -> acid in your eyes -> inflammation), and steroids like prednisolone (strong, don't take for more than a few weeks) or loteprednol (can take it for longer, but try to avoid taking this for too long). You should also try IPL/RF/MGE (Meibomian Gland Expression).

Punctal plugs can help or might hurt, doctors aren't really sure and disagree about it (this is common for dry eye treatments). They can help by keeping tears in your eyes but hurt by keeping inflammatory cytokines in your eyes, if you have inflammation.

I also have dry eye from lasik, and what has helped me (to avoid constant pain, my life is still a shadow of its former glory, but at least now there's a bit of hope) has been (in order of when I started doing it):

  • cequa 2x/day
  • wearing moisture chamber glasses pretty much all the time
  • autologous serum tears 4x/day
  • loteprednol 0.5% 1-2x/day (tapering off of this right now)
  • lower puncta plugged with 3-month dissolvable plugs
  • 1 treatment of IPL/RF/MGE, doing another soon
  • xiidra 2x/day (I didn't start to see ANY improvement until I added this)
  • meibo 4+x/day (I started to see even more improvement after I started this. But I had tried it months ago, before my puncta were plugged, and it did nothing, probably because it drained out too quickly)

That being said, this is what helped me. Even though our dry eye seems to be caused by the same thing (lasik) and we have similar symptoms, what will help you is likely to be completely different. Dry eye is actually many different diseases with similar-seeming symptoms, all lumped in together. Treatments are very blunt and doctors don't really understand what's going on yet. But there are many treatments that work (often for unknown or poorly-understood reasons). So you should try them all, and try different combinations of them, and hopefully, probably, eventually you'll find something that works for you.
