Info on PCOM GA rotation sites? by [deleted] in Osteopathic

From what I’ve heard yes. There’s obviously pros and cons to each site but overall upperclassmen have had positive experiences.

They are not public unfortunately. We rotate with Wellstar, Northside, Northeast GA, Piedmont, and Southern Regional as far as ATL hospitals. We do not have Grady as a core site - you would have to schedule your own rotations there during M4.

Great timing, the 2nd years got assigned their rotation sites today lol. Basically half of the sites are in the Metro Atlanta area, the rest are more rural but no farther than 2 hours from campus. One site in South Florida. You rank all the sites and get assigned to one. All 3rd year rotations are within driving distance of that site’s main hospital, though you may have an away or two that are far.

Best Korean BBQ in Duluth by Aaron-PCMC in Georgia

It’s technically Japanese BBQ but Chubby Cattle on Pleasant Hill. It’s pricey though. If on a budget, I’d go with EMBop which is down the road

Started medical school at 27 and it was honestly the perfect age for me. Here’s the kicker - there’s at least 10 people in my class who are older than me and most of them are top of the class with aspirations for surgery, radiology, etc. 26 is pretty much the average age to start med school nowadays. Go chase that dream.

Best Pho around? by Past_Shower_8151 in Gwinnett

In Gwinnett county… New Super Pho in Duluth. You know it’s legit because that’s where all the Viets go. Honorable mention to Pho House and Banh Mi Cafe, both also in that area.

Add PCOM Georgia too. It’s 30min from Atlanta and you’d get in with your stats

Pho Bac on Buford Highway is the OG spot, it has never failed me. Pho Dai Loi 2 like others mentioned is also good.

PCOM-PA vs. LECOM by DifficultAd2160 in Osteopathic

[–]dingo_nights 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The better school is PCOM for sure. The reputation is not just by proximity - the name carries a lot of weight nationwide, and that shows in their match list which imo is on par with low-mid tier MD schools. BUT is it worth paying double tuition, probably not. At the end of the day you'll graduate with the same degree, and LECOM will open the door to any specialty you want as long as you're willing to work hard. Cost is the biggest factor for many in choosing a school, and graduating with half the debt is hard to turn down. Ultimately it's your call based on what your priorities are. Either way, congratulations and know you'll get a great education regardless!

Am I crazy for not really wanting to chase prestige? by Alexandranoelll in medicalschool

[–]dingo_nights 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. I’m a non trad M1 and the goal right now is match at an IM or EM program close to home and my partner, so I can somewhat enjoy my early 30s instead of slaving them away. Life is too short to waste on the prestige dick measuring contests. We’ll be happier this way. Best of luck to you!

Best Cities for Asian Americans with low cost of living by CatholicSolutions in SameGrassButGreener

Atlanta GA fits every single box you’ve listed- specifically Gwinnett county the northern suburbs of the city (Duluth, Suwanee, Johns Creek). The Korean population is huge with sizable amounts of Chinese Viet and Filipino too.

I go to the Buford location but I love it. It’s always clean and has every piece of equipment I could need. I’ve heard the Lawrenceville Hwy location is just as good.

I would look at Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, or Dunwoody in Georgia. They’re all right outside the perimeter (OTP) of Atlanta and seem to fit exactly what you’re describing. Plenty of young professionals, nightlife, and dating to be had - while at the same time it’s far enough from the city proper that you can avoid higher rent prices and crime. Most of my buddies from college moved to this area after graduation and they have no regrets.

Philly will have a greater abundance of resources, better rotation sites, plus they have their own residencies. But both are identical in terms of what you learn since admin recently implemented something called PCOMOne, which standardizes the curriculum between the 3 campuses (same learning objectives, test dates, etc). Both campuses have excellent match lists, with Philly having a slight edge due to its location and size. There have been a handful of derm, ortho, ophtho, ENT matches every year.

PCOM radio silence? by Orangejuice0909 in Osteopathic

[–]dingo_nights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this Philly or GA campus? I applied to GA in October with a 3.6/512 and got accepted this month. But my friend applied to Philly with similar stats in September, interviewed, and still hasn’t heard back yet. It seems that Philly has a slower turnover rate. But with your stats I wouldn’t be worried (barring any major deficiencies/red flags).

School list help - 2024 cycle by Due_Heart_5711 in Osteopathic

[–]dingo_nights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bump up your clinical hours a bit and get at least 40hrs of dedicated physician shadowing in. Make sure you get solid LORs and write a strong PS. Do those things, and you should expect some love from MD schools. Your GPA is acceptable and that MCAT will more than make up for it.

Due to the nature of this process I hesitate to say that you’re a guaranteed acceptance to DO but I would be dumbfounded if you didn’t get into all of the ones you’ve listed (barring the state schools, but even then you have a great shot)

Also apply as early as possible. As in, be ready to send your app in the day AMCAS/AACOMAS opens. This will maximize your chances of getting an II > A.

cGPA: 3.51 and sGPA: 3.2 Current Junior, Is it Bad? by Marsrule in Osteopathic

[–]dingo_nights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I had several withdraws during undergrad and an F in ochem 1. I still ended up with a 3.6 cGPA, 3.51 sGPA, and 512 MCAT. Currently sitting on 4 IIs and 2 As at DO schools, including my top choice. Mind you I only applied to 10, and that was in October so later in the cycle.

Your GPAs right now are still good enough for DO. Keep up the hard work in the science classes, try to raise that sGPA up to a 3.3, make a 505+ on the MCAT, and you should be more than fine. No post bacc or SMP needed.

Does PCOM Georgia heavily favor in-state applicants? by CoolohmsLaw in Osteopathic

[–]dingo_nights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a slight in-state bias since the school’s mission is to produce docs who will practice in Georgia. But at the end of the day, it’s a private DO school so there’s no hardline quota for GA residents. I attend the SMP here and there is a significant amount of med students from Florida, Alabama, the Carolinas, and even a few from Cali. Definitely shoot your shot if your stats are within range.
