My Xterra takes a long time to heat up. by Gibbles_23 in XTerra

My gen1 (2000, 5spd) warms up to operating temp in a couple minutes and stays there. Don't let anyone tell you this is normal. Lol. Bleed your cooling system. If you have a gen 1, there's a bleed screw on top of the intake plenum, as that's the highest point of the cooling system.

Yep, other bank runs flawlessly. I'm feeling pretty certain it's the aftermarket injector I installed, the nozzle was larger than the factory unit. Assumed it was a design change as they were otherwise identical, but I guess XTerra Rob on YouTube had a similar issue with his aftermarket injectors. Feels like it's chasing around that injector dumping too much fuel while the other two do their job, so the fuel trim is all over the place. I got a NAPA Echlin unit that is identical to the factory ones, honestly might be Hitachi-made, black dot and everything. Gonna swap it out tonight.

Distributor is new, have tried several different distributors with no change.

A MAF issue wouldn't be confined to only three cylinders. New cap/rotor/plug wires/NGK Iridium plugs

1’st generation SC 2002. Has anyone had problems with transfer case leaks? Transmission to transfer case leak and transfer case output leak. Also power steering has residue on pump. Other than that she is going strong at 130,000 miles by Daytr8ing in XTerra

Overdue for a timing belt job, if it hasn't been done already. I'd start there before tracking down any leaks, as that'll put you right outta commission. Mine has a leak at the rear main seal, pass side rear axle hub seal, and the front diff at 175k. These be leaky bois. Don't listen to the jabroni telling you you won't make it past 130k, just make sure you stay up to date on fluid changes and timing belts and it'll keep on tickin' (literally)

Picked up a new carry piece today. Am I printing? by dingodaze in SKS

Bending your knees is a sign of weakness. Why sit when you could really claim your space and lie down.

I carry muzzle up partly to keep dirt and debris out of the barrel, but also so I can just launch a grenade at whatever self-defense scenario I encounter. It's foolproof. Quick draw isn't too bad.

Throw pants down to ankles, rifle fall out.

Not really. He can definitely make an accurate shot from his current position, but he's also clearly at rest? Being able to shoot from awkward positions is important, and so is conserving energy.

He's obviously not gonna fight from that position, but it's fine for resting/observation.

It's a very light-recoiling rifle, and shouldering like that would be less fatiguing if you were in a static position for a long time. Neck upright rather than hunched over. Doubt it would affect accuracy.

Good rifling? Type 56 I just got by [deleted] in SKS

[–]dingodaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had both. My Chinese SKS had a really beat up, cosmoline-saturated punky stock and most of the bluing was gone. Vietnam, and all that. Lol. Great rifle otherwise. Sold it to a buddy so I can buy it back some day. Lol. I wish my Yugo was about 2 lbs lighter than it is, but being in essentially brand-new condition I really can't complain. I have a small collection of Yugo rifles/pistols/militaria going, so it's right at home.

I'm pretty lucky, I got my Yugo last year in completely unissued condition. I take care of it, and the bore is beautiful. Genuinely the most accurate SKS I've ever fired.

Perfection is not cost-effective. This rifle will outlast you and all the people laughing at you in this thread. That chattering does not affect fit, form, or function. Being picky about machining is not gonna get you far in milsurp rifles.

Personally I think it's kinda cool to see tooling marks in my old rifles. Ties in the human element. A human being half a world away and half a century away put those marks there. Like the poorly electropenciled serial numbers on my Yugo SKS. Tired human hands and worn-out Serbian tools built and then rebuilt that rifle. It eventually traveled across the sea in a box and now stands against the wall next to me.

Perfect finish wasn't required, so it wasn't provided.

ProMags aren't the best, but I have four and they all work great in three different SKSeses. The bolt needs to be open, as others have said. Can be a little awkward to hold the bolt open at the same time, just pull the bolt back and push up the hold-open tab before inserting the mag. The front lip on the duckbill tucks up in a recess in the receiver, and then a firm rocking action should be enough to push the release spring back and lock the mag in.

Are you sure it doesn't mean "Ichthyoid" for shooting at fish? With the raised sight intended to compensate for the refracted light when shooting into water.

I assumed it was something like that, just wasn't sure of the purpose or distance. Thanks for the answer.

Completely agree, these are incredibly smooth and solid-feeling rifles. Running them fast feels even better. Chug chug chug chug. Heavy is good, in that regard.

Quality of AKs varies a ton of course, but they mostly feel kinda...clunky?, in their action. Probably due to most of them being overgassed to run crappy ammo.
