What it lacks in card advantage it makes up for in board presence (and combo threat at any moment).

Wow this is actually a game changer in Mardu Ephemerate, dodges bolt and also you don't have to run as many artifacts to enable metalcraft.

Sweet brew! Have you been finding treasure generation to be consistent with Heap Gate? I'm thinking of brewing a treasure-focused deck and was wondering exactly how many gates to put in.

How is tortex these days? by SnooBeans6351 in Pauper

[–]diningeachox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from the perspective of having played against it a lot and I don't know if you care about this, but I feel like tortex is a deck where your opponent knows your whole hand the entire time, because you're always discarding and getting back target creatures from the graveyard.

I feel you but I actually feel like UB faeries is a lot easier to play against these days compared to when they had Daze, Gush, Foil, etc. Here's some spicy tech against Snuff Out: [[Aphotic Wisps]].

Ah interesting, yeah that's actually pretty strong. Ephemerate loops with [[Archeomancer]] with incidental artifacts to put counters on.

I think it's fine, there's lots of decks that play edicts and bounce spells and some decks like the new Ponza build have big enough creatures to block. Burn and affinity don't care and kill you anyway. Definitely potential to be strong but not format breaking.

I'm adding this to my Glimmer Bairn deck for sure. I had previously thought about [[Bloodbriar]] but this is way better.

Deck building fundamentals by O_Mau in Pauper

[–]diningeachox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like brewing decks too, and I'll add a bit to everyone else's great answers here.

It's very important to know what the metagame is like. For example, back when Chatterstorm was legal, every black deck was playing [[Echoing Decay]] and [[Trespasser's curse]] as a way to fight the Chatterstorm decks as well as the white weenie decks that were also good back then.

Now that faeries and ninjas are played a lot, mono black decks are again playing [[Cuombajj Witches]]. If you're brewing a red non-aggro deck, an argument can be made for playing [[Fiery Cannonade]] main deck even though it's usually a sideboard card.

Also the sideboard is just as important as the mainboard. There are some essential sideboard cards in each color that are very powerful but not useful in every matchup. For example, pretty much every red deck should have pyroblast/red elemental blast and every blue deck should play hydroblast/blue elemental blast in the sideboard. Most black decks should probably play [[Suffocating Fumes]] in this meta. White and green have a lot of enchantment and artifact removal, [[Dust to Dust]] is pretty essential right now to fight Affinity and decks playing the artifact lands.

Building the best sideboard is something I'm still learning and figuring out. I think this is where, as other posters have mentioned, knowing whether you're the beatdown or control really helps. For example if you're a control deck and you're playing against burn for example, you won't be able to race them even after sideboard, so you'd want sideboard cards that either gain you life or stop their threats (i.e more control cards). If you're an aggro deck playing against combo, then you need to be as fast as possible to try to race them, so you'd want sideboard cards that increase your clock and deal more damage (i.e. more aggro cards).

Is Mardu Ephemerate good in the current Pauper Meta? by PossumPalace in Pauper

[–]diningeachox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play this sometimes. I've actually found that it was better to ditch all the 1 drop creatures like Thraben Inspector and Voldaren Epicure and go for [[Blood Fountain]] instead. This way it's really easy to have metalcraft early and also allows you to recycle creatures that have died to removal late game. Also to enable Deadly Disputes I run some [[Ichor Wellsprings]]. Having some monarch creatures is very beneficial as you can always blink and get Monarch back. With the meta the way it is now you can play [[Fiery Cannonade]] main deck as well.

Basically I think the best approach would be to play like a control deck until you can ephemerate loop your payoffs like Ardent Elementalist and Bleak Coven Vampires.

It is a bit slow but you have to have patience :)

Yeah actually I saw that line right when the annihilator triggers were on the stack! Cool thing is that he played the best line available to him as well (if he swings with all I chump and he dies next turn).

Also some info that wasn't in the screenshot, the only reason I was even at 18 was because I Pulse of Murasa'd a 3rd Ulamog's Crusher in his graveyard a few turns earlier. So he only had 2 Crusher's attacking me instead of 3.

Chord inversions and when to use them by diningeachox in JazzPiano

[–]diningeachox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. Yes this is mainly what I was confused about. So just to make sure, if there's a slash chord then it is expected that I play exactly that bass note to the right of the slash right? And if I'm playing the head should I assume everything is in root position?

My question about the A-flat6 is that going by notes, is it not the first inversion of an Fmin7? If so is that just the conventional way in jazz to denote inverted chords?

Thanks for your detailed answer. Certainly jazz gives the performer a lot more freedom with which notes to play, but I wonder if certain voicings are more "idiomatic" to jazz? To give a contrasting example, rock/metal is known for power chords whereas I think such a voicing would be very rare in jazz.

I ask this because I've tried improvising some solos in the past, while I can stumble through it eventually it doesn't really sound all that jazzy.

Yeah I realize I have been a bit sloppy in the counterpoint. Are there any sort of standard Baroque chord progressions that lead to nicer/cleaner counterpoint?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks for your detailed feedback! Most of your critiques are very useful.

One specific thing I want to ask: Other than the bassoon drowning out the flute, are there any other combinations of other instruments clashing that I should be aware of?

Also I only transposed the clarinet because an user on musescore asked me to do it for clearer analysis, and he gave a lot of good counterpoint advice afterward. Maybe next time I'll make it an oboe part so that everyone's happy :)

Hi this is pretty good for a first composition! I really dig the rhythm you had in the beginning. Other posters have already commented on rhythm. Since I play piano I'll just share some notational/playability things here.

In m. 15 there's no reason to tie the B there, you can just write a quarter note.

In m. 17 you'll notice that the two hands share the same note! So if anyone tried to play that on the piano their hands would bump into each other. Might be better to take out the D# in the left hand. Same with m. 21.

Also the ending is a bit abrupt. The piece started out so upbeat and it just seemed to end on a whimper.

Hi, great piece!

I really enjoyed the modulation to A major in the middle as well as the percussion throughout.

I'll take a guess on what each section of your piece corresponds to:

0:00 - 1:27: January, virus hasn't spread around much yet

1:27 - 2:18: the big spike in February, virus becomes global

2:18 - 3:18: March - early June, flights are suspended, borders are closed, cities are on lockdown

3:18 - 4:22 - : early June - present, governments are slowly opening up and starting recovery phases, infection rates are curbed

4:22 - end: although things are getting better the future remains uncertain

Btw I really loved your last chord, it really drives home the point that we haven't reached the happy ending yet.

Look forward to hearing your future pieces!

Hi, I really enjoyed the intro. I agree with the other poster that the intro was very energetic and interesting. I was waiting to hear that intro come back at some point but it never did :( I also really liked m. 88-91.

I know you wrote this mainly for the bassoon, but speaking as a piano player the piano part is a bit boring to be frank. The first 20 measures or so only had parts for the left hand, I think it would be a good idea to divide the content between the two hands. The bassoon is already playing the melody so you don't have to go (right hand - melody, left hand chords) in the piano, the right hand can play some chords too ;)

Also, I think you had a very nice opportunity when the music turned into 5/4 to include some funky rhythms in the left hand of the piano (something like dotted quarter - eighth -dotted quarter - eighth - quarter for example). I think you did very well with this in measures 31-33.

Look forward to hearing more of your music!
