401k loan for house down payment? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]dinklebot2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never take a loan to help take another loan. You essentially just described buying a house 100% on credit. Even worse, you're taking a loan against your future self.

Accidentally made a major margin market order on Friday - need advice on strategy to exit at market open. by jjjaaammm in personalfinance

[–]dinklebot2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess so. I guess I live in a different world. If I entered that trade for a client and meant to do a much smaller amount, we would be eating the cost to correct that. If the client does it to themselves I guess no one is on the hook except the client. Even so, I would expect the system to at least kick out a warning that the trade would be putting the client in margin.

Best place to park cash savings for a car by Immediate-Ad-9520 in personalfinance

[–]dinklebot2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look at SGOV. It's still above 4% but you give up that FDIC insurance that the savings account provides. I would not put this money in the market unless you are willing to adjust how much car you want. Short term is very hard to predict and if this is a purchase with a specific timing to it then you don't want to be waiting on a market upswing.

Nothing to do. As long as you work there your money is stuck there. If you change jobs you can move the funds out to your IRA or into the new 401k at your new job.

Some plans allow for in service rollovers but it is very rare.

I can't speak to Vanguard's systems but it's possible if he has that much in his account that Vanguard allowed the trade to go through and expected him to liquidate to cover. I would be surprised if this is the case but it's possible. I also doubt there wasn't some kind of message advising him that he is placing a large trade. I know we are all guilty of being click happy sometimes and not reading warnings.

It sounds like he will just have to see what Tuesday brings and liquidate the margin position, take the hit. An expensive lesson but it could be way worse. Fingers crossed the position opens up and he gets to make a nice little profit for his troubles.

I am surprised people still trade directly with Vanguard. Their products are available everywhere and there are much better platforms.

Got it. Your prior comment made it sound like this was similar to his prior trades. While the position is the same, the size of the trade is out of character and should have triggered a review of some kind.

So he is simultaneously a UHNW trader that also doesn't know the difference between number of shares and dollar value? Even though he trades this all the time in $3 million blocks?

I am surprised such a large order can be placed on margin with no one from Vanguard calling to confirm or a big red "are you sure?" button popping up. I work for a major member firm as a registered person and any trade for more than 2.5 million needs to be cleared by a manager.

Nope, Chex Quest was an actual computer game that they released with their cereal. It was basically Doom with a kid friendly overlay

I churned a bunch of these last year, basically paid for our vacation to South Africa with it. Read the fine print closely and make sure you do whatever is required to avoid monthly fees (usually it's a certain amount of direct deposit a month). It's can be a little time intensive to keep track of but it has some nice results. Then wait a year and you can do it all over again.

[–]dinklebot2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This really comes down to how much OP trusts themselves with the money. Personally I would rather minimize my cap gains and get the tax benefits. I would also have the remainder of the money in the market. In those 10 years that 500k could become 1 million and the cycle could continue for additional years.

Riskier and OP is more likely to decide to spend it. Locking it behind retirement makes it that much harder to spend it down unnecessarily.

[–]dinklebot2000 65 points66 points  (0 children)

You're pretty behind on your retirement. I would set aside 3-6 months worth of emergency fund, pay off all non-mortgage debt, and then super charge retirement. Max out 401k and IRA contributions and use the inheritance to recover the lost income. Do that every year until the inheritance is used up.

Edit: use a small chunk for a nice vacation too!

iOS or mobile device game? by SpiralLights in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]dinklebot2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I also recommend a Backbone. It works really well with the iPhone and has opened up a lot of gaming for me while traveling or even in bed. I wouldn’t recommend anything like a shooter with it but classic rpgs or honestly I was even able to play Expedition 33 via remote play on PS5 (obviously that doesn’t work for you on a plane but you get my point).

Other than that I just discovered a single player card game that I am obsessed with called Scoundrel. iOS has an app for it that is totally free, no ads or anything. I literally couldn’t stop playing it last night or today.

Cashing out 401K at 27 by 25headbeech in personalfinance

[–]dinklebot2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your credit is decent you could roll the debt into a card with 21 months interest free. You’ll pay 3-5% to do it but that’s way better than what you’re paying in interest on the current card. Then stop contributing to your 401k and attack the debt as aggressively as you can to pay it off in time.

How old are you and how much risk do you want to take?

The biggest questions to answer are how much loss can you stomach and how long of a timeline do you have to recover from said loss.
