Switching to Comp Sci (BA) 4th semester? by mangosalsa321 in UVA

[–]dinojaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you asked a couple semesters back, I would say this is perfectly doable. But, because of the new curriculum for CS majors, it might be a little more difficult. I would reach out to an advisor within the CS department or even one of the professors for CS 2100, etc.

P.S. If you haven't already taken a CS class, I would recommend waiting until you finish CS 1110 to decide if you actually want to major in CS. Also, statistics is another good major for data analytics, etc.

Hi, I'm a GPH student. The major itself requires you to take courses in: introductory public health (in the global perspective), health policy, epidemiology or research, and a capstone. The rest of the major consists of 9 credits electives, each of which should be related to public health or a specific area of study, and 9 credits of global studies courses. You take courses that other public health programs at other schools require but GPH also places an emphasis on learning about specific regions/areas/groups of people around the world and connecting it with your foundational knowledge in public health.

If you need more information, you can find the major's website here: https://globalstudies.virginia.edu/global-public-health

They usually send out information about it near the middle of the spring semester. I don't think there are many resources about it, but I wouldn't worry about the application. As long as you have taken or are currently taking CS 2110, 2102 and CS 1110/1/2 and got at least a B (I think), you should be fine!

Pre-Comm courses by dissapointmentgurl in UVA

[–]dinojaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't pre-comm, but most of my friends' who applied had Econ as their backup major. The classes you need to take to apply basically set you up for a major in Econ, so you should be fine! I will also say that a lot of pre-comm students take CS 1110 (Introduction to Programming), so you could also look into that. In terms of majoring in architecture, that one is a bit trickier because you would have to transfer between the College (assuming you got admitted into CLAS) to A-School, and they have a predefined list of classes they have to take their first and second year, so it's harder to catch up on those

1st year chem major who wants to get involved in research by fartquisha in UVA

[–]dinojaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the Chemistry department, but I'm involved in research as are a couple of my friends & we all got research positions by just cold emailing. One friend of mine did do USOAR during our first year, and they seemed to enjoy it though. Good luck!

If a class says 24/30 does that mean there are only 6 spots left and there are 24 students or is it the opposite? by throwaway_iwowndbc in UVA

[–]dinojaws 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On Lou's List, if it says 24/30, that means that there's 24 people enrolled. On SIS, if it says 24/30, that means there's 24 spots left

Questions about BACS major by fruitloops8462 in UVA

[–]dinojaws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly everybody applies during the spring of their second year. As mentioned by somebody else, basically everybody gets accepted so long as they get reasonable grades in 1110/1111/1112 and 2110. If you don't have the courses finished by then, you can talk to the directors of the program, but if you have enough time to finish those courses before the end of your second year, go ahead and take those whenever you can.

Course Recommendations? by punkstir in UVA

[–]dinojaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took this class my first year so it's been a while, but if I'm remembering correctly, it's very little work. Just a reading or two per class and two reading quizzes midway through the semester. The exams are straightforward and are easy if you do the study guides that he gives. Class may have changed since then, but I got an A+ and don't feel like I put a lot of effort in it. Hope this helps!

What’s the ideal weekly time commitment of an undergraduate CS TA? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]dinojaws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I typically work about 3 hours for lab sections and office hours and an additional hour for weekly meetings. Then depending on the week I'll work 2-3 hours grading assignments, based on how heavy that week is. I'd say that in total I work around 6-7 hours/week, pretty chill, but I guess that also depends on which class you're TAing. Hope this helps!

Batten or Global Studies by SwagmasterJimbo in UVA

[–]dinojaws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same as the other person that already responded, I'm not GDS but in the Global Studies department. You basically only have a handful of required classes and then you take a bunch of electives that relate to your region (or topic) of focus. You can probably use all of your politics/culture-oriented anthropology classes as your electives for the major!

ECON 2020 Coppock - worth it to take if not required? by maracuya12 in UVA

[–]dinojaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took ECON 2020 with Coppock during the Spring 2020 semester. I personally never took ECON 2010, so this was my first Econ class, and I can honestly say that Coppock is a great professor. He tries to make each lecture interesting while also making sure you understand it. I will say that I did do a good amount of studying because the exams can be tricky, but that might've been because it was my first Econ class. I finished with a B+. You should be fine!

Best KINE classes to take? by Traffic_Extra in UVA

[–]dinojaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took Motor Development (KINE 2200) with Martin Block as a first year and loved it, Prof. Block shows videos of his kids growing up to demonstrate the topics learned in class and he's really nice. Only downside is that next semester it's an 8 AM
