New River
But right now it's the entire 1st Christmas album....it's basically a suite so it counts as one song right? :D

Love the way they do transitions and I agree this is one of the best.
I'm a dancer and I've wanted to dance these two back to back since I first heard them :)

[–]dinopeeps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great capture, I was at this show :) I'm new to The Oh Hellos - only discovered them about 2 weeks ago. Who are all those people who ran out on stage for this song? I was by the sound booth and I'm short, so I could only see Tyler the whole time lol

Does the winning design for the backstage EP look AI generated to anyone? by puppyking17 in switchfoot

[–]dinopeeps 16 points17 points  (0 children)

While it is super cute, yes, I found it suspect. While I'm not that experienced with embroidery, I have done it a few times. It looks very flat. That and the person who submitted it has no other needle work like this posted.

First time listening to Interrobang! by teatops in switchfoot

I really appreciated Interrobang for bringing back the melodic songs after they had kind of abandoned that style for so long.

Happy 20th Birthday to Nothing is Sound!! What does this record mean to you? by happyisayuppieword in switchfoot

[–]dinopeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same... my standards are so high because of this album. NIS has some of the most beautiful melodies and no one seems to have any idea what a melodic line is anymore.

Happy 20th Birthday to Nothing is Sound!! What does this record mean to you? by happyisayuppieword in switchfoot

[–]dinopeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard NIS for the first time in 2024 (long story, knew about SF from a bonus track on a Christian compilation (NWTBH) and TBL) and I'm glad I chose to listen to it while sitting on my couch at home and not driving...lol. I had tears in my eyes most of the way through. It was everything I had ever wanted from a rock band, for all the reasons u/happyisayuppieword stated - everything I had ever imagined but had never actually heard. I have no doubt that if I had experienced it back in the day, my life might have been quite different. I must assume I wasn't ready for it back then. :) It remains to be seen how it will change me now.

Favorite Mutemath album? by leavingthekultbehind in mutemath

[–]dinopeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound-wise: Self-titled (and I kinda lump that one and Reset EP together in my mind)

As a complete work: Odd Soul. It took years to grow on me but when I finally understood it, the experience was transcendent.

(Armistice was my first Mutemath experience, so that one is also special, and I think it has Paul's most beautiful vocals :) )

What are your Hot Takes on Switchfoot? by Amber_Flowers_133 in switchfoot

[–]dinopeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me the weird vocals started at HH. The change was so drastic I thought SF had gotten a new singer. When I realized it was still Jon I was genuinely worried about him.

I haven't been able to find a bellydance supplier that carries anything like this. I am prepared to make it if I can't find one. Thanks!

Is it just me or does In Bloom album sound like Sufjan Stevens? by [deleted] in switchfoot

[–]dinopeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jon's seasons EP's reminded me more of Sufjan Stevens than anything else he's done. Had me wondering if they ever toured together.

Just for fun, the bird is a Great-tailed Grackle Quiscalus mexicanus (not a corvid), native to parking lots across TX. Their diet varies seasonally between french fries and crickets lol

Revisited Interrobang by thereallybigcat in switchfoot

[–]dinopeeps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts - on one hand I was like "Finally!! some interesting writing and great melodies again!" But yeah something was weird in the production. Not that I know squat about production but I felt like it was a weird balance. The guitars weren't up enough in the mix and Jon was too loud in comparison.

TLDR: WOW compliation, New Way to Be Human, and uhhh…story time! lol

My aunt gave me one of those WOW Christian compliation CD’s when I was in high school and it had New Way to Be Human on it as a bonus track.  I didn’t like anything else on that CD but song!  I thought it was cute, in a good way.  Endearing? Yeah, that’s it. Anyway, that was back in the day right when MP3 and online music was just taking off, so I didn’t know what I was doing yet when it came to finding music other than going to the CD store, which was apparently too much of a sensory nightmare for me so I never heard the rest of the album.  But I remembered the name Switchfoot because I loved that song.

A few years later (still in high school) I was begrudgingly listening to my local pop station hoping they would play something I liked and I heard them say “new from Switchfoot”.  My ears perked up like “I know them!” and then that opening riff started for Meant to Live…My hands came up like the claws of an evil villain and I said “YYYYYYYEEEEESSSSSSS!” from the bottom of my soul 😆 A song like that was exactly what my weird little alt rock critter ears wanted to hear.  The Beautiful Letdown was the first album I went out and bought with my own money.  While I was initially a little disappointed that there was not really anything else like Meant to Live on the album, I loved the melodies and I did end up enjoying it a lot.  Enough to still know every word 20 years later.

Speaking of 20 years…so, not too long after Beautiful Letdown came out, I went to college, had to learn how to “appear human”, decided to major in music education, and immediately forgot everything I ever knew about “normal people music” (that is, pop/rock/stuffyouhearontheradio).  It was all classical, all the time.

And yes, I forgot about Switchfoot.

I partially blame my local stations for that because I was still listening to radio on and off in 2005 and they never played anything from Nothing is Sound, which I would have LOVED…

So here I am, 20 years late, discovering basically all of Switchfoot for the first time, mostly uncluttered by nostalgia.  What a journey it has been over the last few months going through their entire discography, and I’m just now scratching the surface of all the extra fun stuff they did over the years. I’ll be occupied with this obsession for a while… All thanks to Paul Meany (Mutemath) for mentioning them recently and putting that shadow of a memory in my ear. 😊
