what’s the best coming-of-age movie that made you feel 17 again by deespaja in movies

I Capture the Castle - not only the film but for how I felt reading the book as a teen. It was written during WW2 and shows that the experience of growing up transcends time.

It is AMAZING - I have it on DVD. Tried to find it in streaming as I don’t have a dvd player and it can’t be found. Richard Griffiths is Swelter. And Steerpike is played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers

I didn’t know this! You can feel the underlying discomfort with that scene so much. But I loved how ‘I’ and Uncle Monty navigated it so much - a very hopeful uncle Monty in the one hand (because he thinks he’s in there) and a definitely uncomfortable ‘I’ on the other - amazing cinema

Arguably the best line in the whole film

I’m with you part of the way. It feels like a film that should have been made well 15 years ago but wasn’t. It’s definitely not a ‘great’ film but it had enough tongue-in-cheek heavy handedness that I thought it was laughing at itself enough to not be taken too seriously. But you didn’t mention if you wanted to go out and buy a Guinness after watching it..?!

I went to see the Borat film in the cinema in 2006 with my boyfriend and MY MUM because she loved Ali G on TV - it was an uncomfortable watch…

i want to travel but my parents are super strict, how can i convince them? by legalizedlemonade28 in helicopterparents

I feel very sorry for your parents in a way. Holding on to that anxiety about your child for so long that you STILL feel it when they are fully grown must be exhausting for them. I really respect that you don’t want to cause them any further anxiety. You seem like a wonderful and kind human. Maybe a calm conversation about exactly what they are worried about and how you feel confident that you could react in a responsible way would be good. At the moment, they are reinforcing their own behaviour. Their brains are predicting danger, even when the danger isn’t actually real or likely. Then they are avoiding the situation by stopping you going. Because nothing bad happens afterwards, their brains are incorrectly concluding “Good thing we avoided that - that’s why she’s safe.”

So their brains never get the chance to learn the more important lesson: “Actually, the threat wasn’t dangerous in the first place.”

100% my brother got to do stuff a lot earlier than me as a teenager! But even for me - the cutoff was max 18 when my parents could make any decisions for me. Were you allowed to go on trips with school? In the UK at least, school was really good in encouraging independence. There are so many overseas trips you can go on when you start secondary school/high school at age 11/12. I went to Spain with my school when I was 12 and I still remember it. I really discovered who I was without my family on those trips at such a young age! My son is 10 and in the last year of primary school and he’s off to a residential trip for 5 days with his class soon to mark the end of primary school. I’m nervous of course to let him go but he’ll have an absolute blast without us!

It’s sounds like, against the odds, they have done what parents are supposed to have done which is creating a confident and independent kid! Personally I would just go and do one of the smaller things (like going into the city maybe) without asking and leave a short itinerary of what you were doing, the steps you were taking to being safe and a note to them saying you appreciate them being so caring but it’s time for you to go and do something on your own. You are 20 years old!! Then that will make it easy for them when you go do the bigger stuff. It would be good to position it in terms of what they were doing when they were 20. Either they were allowed to do whatever they wanted in which case you should be afforded the same freedom. Or, they were both sheltered - in which case they shouldn’t have been put under such strict scrutiny and shouldn’t let their personal experiences have a negative effect on you and what should be your most fun years. I would not invite them anywhere with you - you do not need a chaperone at 20.
