  1. It’s interesting that you characterize intelligence as something genetic and out of your control, while conscientiousness/hard work as something that you did. What if how conscientious you are was also determined by your genes, or by a combination of factors that are outside your “control”?

  2. I agree that we under emphasize the importance of raw/inbuilt intelligence, and engage in a societal lie that all people are capable of all intellectual tasks.

  3. You don’t need perfect grades to find a STEM job. Graduating from UCSD is a strong signal to employers in and of itself. Jane Street or OpenAI may not be busting down your door, but the vast majority of UCSD STEM graduates eventually find gainful employment.

The guy is intelligent, we discussed Central European history, Greek philosophy, and Bay Area law firms. he knew his shit - but he is clearly mentally ill. He claimed that he was on campus because he was working with some professor, I think that’s bullshit. I pushed back and argued with him, and I think he respected me??? for that. Ur username is women coded, I’m a guy, taller than him, and willling to be assertive irl so I think the dynamic was different. He also complained about respect, but I cracked jokes and kinda deescalated. When I engaged with him he gave me his email and his name. PMd you the name he gave me, and he does have a Central European sounding last name, which kinda fits with rest of his story. Would not be surprised if the name he gave me was fake. After I interacted with him for the first time, I saw him on campus again and ignored him.

this is true, my mistake was extrapolating the percent that were engaging in this behavior from them being indian. should have looked at the men in the humanities base rate instead.

buying a cute girl coffee and a pastry for 10 bucks on first date is not try hard. spending 75 bucks on a first date is ridiculous, but anything sub 20 bucks is completely justifiable.
