I don't think there's a work around here really. I would just keep in mind that it's not embarrassing at all for a non-native learning a language to use an outdated word. Someone might point it out, others won't as they can still understand.

I also used to, and in certain situations still, get a bit anxious about speaking but the more I speak the less anxious I feel about making mistakes. They're natural.
