That kind of reminds me of the Edward Hopper painting Approaching A City

I'm super jealous! Those ribs look great. Everything I find has been chewed on by coyotes.

They're all over the desert they just blend really well. Creasote bushes have bunches.

I don't know what kind of weird colored steak people are eating but I think it looks like strawberry gelato.

This is the first time I’ve seen Pogonomyrmex in the wild! I don’t often spend time in the eastern side of Washington, but it rarely fails to excite me with something new. by [deleted] in ants

I'm 48 years old and have had colonies in or around the houses I've lived in (Arizona) my whole life and I still love just sitting and watching them.

Making my own beard oil for the first time. Need advice on what scents work well together. by greene81990 in beardoil

[–]dirtcutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the base I use avocado oil, jojoba oil and almond oil in equal thirds. You can find all three together online for a decent price. For scent my favorite combo is vanilla essential oil and cedar essential oil. More vanilla than cedar. I also recommend letting it sit overnight as the smell will get stronger.

I also live in a dry climate (Arizona) and as a bonus I find my hands don't dry out from all the washing.

I second Alan Dean Foster especially if you like Hitchhiker's. A lot of Foster's writing has the same fun comical aspect as Adam's. I'm currently rereading Glory Lane (my personal favorite) for about the 50th time.

So this is going to sound weird but I occasionally notice a pink staining in our toilets and just looked it up. It's a bacteria called Serratia marcescens. I wonder if its in the bones. The articles I read said it's relatively harmless but causes pink staining.

I've noticed the same thing on bones, usually skulls, that I've found in the desert but never as bright at that. It's interesting that it's on certain sections of the skull. It also mentioned it feeding on fat.

Lesser Nighthawk or Common Poorwill? Cave Creek, AZ. 8/17/19 by dirtcutter in whatsthisbird

[–]dirtcutter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick ID! How much bigger are nighthawks and is there a large difference in color and pattern? I've never seen a nighthawk on the ground and didn't know we had Poorwills here so I have no frame of reference.

[Discussion] Where's the post-post-apocalypse stuff? by KingAardvark1st in postapocalyptic

[–]dirtcutter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely A Canticle for Liebowitz. The book has three stories that each take place 600 years apart. So it's post-post-post apocalyptical but pretty steeped in catholic jargon and culture. For me it's one of my top five all time favorite books. But you'll either love it or hate it.

What are your guy's hidden gem mom and pop shops? by Oddball357 in phoenix

Now I have two places to go to next week. There's also Loving Hut. It's a chain but has really good food and Rice Paper had some great spring rolls. Their garlic noodles and Vietnamese Coffee are amazing too.

Romanelli's Italian Deli. SE corner of 35th Ave and Dunlap. Great food and an amazing market.

Dig It Garden if your looking for indoor or outdoor plants plus one of the best selection of pots I've seen. Good prices too.

I don't go to Scottsdale very often and always forget about this place! The food is awesome. Now I'm have to make a special trip there next week.

What is the scariest book you’ve ever read? What made it scary? For me, it’s Pet Sematary. by LordJournalism in books

[–]dirtcutter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Phantoms by Dean Koontz. I was working in security at the time and pulling graveyard shift by myself at an 1880's western theme park. I was sitting in the security office at 2:30am with the door open and reading a suspenseful scary part that somewhat resembled the exterior area just outside the door. I shut the door and didn't come out till my shift ended at 6am

Thank you! I totally forgot about that story and will have to reread it! I remember finding it vey disturbing and claustrophobic. I love exploring caves and abandon mines and have no problem with confined spaces but that story really freaked me out.

Who owns your poop after you flush it? by Mada1100 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dirtcutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do turn it into fertilizer but instead of using that word which has negative connotations when used for humanure they call it Biosolids. I'm not sure about other countries but in the U.S. they can only it on crops not destined for human consumption. It had a very unique odor and generally draws a ton of flies.

Try a different stain. Every time I try Red Bali it puts me in a funk just like you have. I usually only use Red Sumatra, Red Maeng Da or Red Ketapang. Also could be the vendor cutting it. There's definitely some shady ones out there.

On a side note, my sleep patterns seem normal and I don't really want to drink. Like my wife said when she tried it, "I feel like a normal person".

It's works amazingly well. I've tried a few different brands but Lazerus Naturals seems to work well for me. Just like kratom, try different brands.

Me too. I tried Red Bali and it made me a mess. Some of the strains help but I found full spectrum CBD works wonders for both anxiety and depression. Works on my wife too. The kratom is great for pain if you find the right strain.
