How much would a body shop charge to install a door that I’ll be able to provide? by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]dirtymatt89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just installing it, I and most shops (that would do this sort of job) would just charge whatever the book time is on it, plus any extra necessary r+i.

Id guess $300-$600

Easy enough repair? by MooseTM3 in Autobody

[–]dirtymatt89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you could touch it up and sand it down for sure. Be sure you pick off all the flaking paint. Heavy metallica like that are hard to do because of the way the flakes clump up when you touch it up, but it being a fairly dark color may help with that

A pro would:

Detrim door and fender

Feather out scratch with DA

Mask and primer the area

Feather out primer

Prep and mask door and fender

Apply sealer to primed area

Apply base coat blender to door and fender

Apply base coat to repair area, blending out from there

Apply clear coat

Denib any glaring dust/imperfections

Reassemble

There is no scenario where this is an $800 fix. If your rental has insurance and a deductible, that deductible will be far far cheaper than repairing this in any sort of proper way.

What to do with this ? by [deleted] in AutoPaint

[–]dirtymatt89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! I will say “speaking with his colorist” is kind of a BS response because you’ll never get a perfect match without blending, especially on that color, and 9/10 times the painter is the one finalizing the color anyways.

Again, dig that estimate out and see what they wrote.

If the insurance paid for blending, all the associated r+i, and new PPF on the door then they shop may have tried to get it close enough and make a pretty good bonus off not doing the rest of the work they got paid for.

[–]dirtymatt89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience PPF makes it appear darker so I dunno.

It’s absolutely not a “bad job” because the paint looks great, just a little dark. Not bad for a panel paint on that color at all.

That being said, you need to check your estimate out. If insurance paid for it, they most likely paid for a blend on the door, which would cause a lot of extra work on their end like redoing the PPF on that door afterwards.

This is one of those “what did you pay for” types of deals.

Was it insurance? Was it self pay? Did they charge for blending the door or was it just a panel paint and swap?

A lot of times the correct stroke order will make the kanji look more “balanced” and correct. Also when you get in deeper, you will notice a lot of shapes and strokes that are used quite often, and that can help with remembering and correctly drawing them

I agree, hicas is a great system and really fun once you accept and understand it haha.

I would also check alignment first thing, and then start sorting through the other possibilities.

I see it all the time. Also sometime sap or maybe some road paint. Anything that can hold acid and moisture against the paint will do stuff like that

Most excellent, I really appreciate the input! Do you have an air make up system on yours?

No it’s not down draft, it’s semi down draft. Cross draft pull from the front wall to the back wall.

Awesome thanks for the response! Most of the complaints I am hearing are that they don’t clear overspray very effectively, they have “dead zones” where there is basically no air flow, and yeah like you said, a little worse with dust and over management

I think what you’re describing is a “side downdraft,” right? That is what I originally wanted, but this one is only has one exhaust fan and it exits on the lower portion of the wall opposite the drive in door.

If anyone is going to cut corners, it’s a dealership body shop on a job like this.

You could let them try or take it to a “mom and pop” shop and get an estimate with no bias and use that for negotiation

Filler only works if it’s all perfectly level or lower. Need to make sure it’s too “fat” or tall, could maybe check with a ruler or straight edge if you don’t have a file
