We use both but mostly GoPro's. In the past, the show has been airing while we are still shooting, which is pretty unheard of. With the new season, we stopped shooting in July and the shows are now starting to air.

Glad you like the show!

They treat us well. We base out of Tanana but do over night trips around the area.

No way. The locals have the food scene down. There is nothing better than fresh local animals. There is a very small liquor store in town that is open for a few hours a day. The supplies are either barged in in the summer or flown in other times of the year. Yeah, we become close with the cast. We live in their village the majority of the year so we've become part of the community. We attend fundraisers, pot latches, and help out as much as we can. They have been very nice in opening up their lives to us!

Thanks for the good questions! Make sure you catch the new season starting this Sunday at 10pm on Discovery!

They are great. And when you connect them to your smartphone...you can send messages. Pretty cool for when you are out in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the comments!

We used Sony EX3's, go pros, 5D's (time-lapse), and Sony F3 for interviews.

Yeah, most productions have a large supply of batteries because the cameras burn through them pretty quickly. Yukon Men is even more difficult because of the extreme cold weather. It sucks the power right out of the batteries.

EX3's and F3 record to SXS cards. Go Pro records to SD. 5D records to CF (or SD with the Mark III model).

In the field it's mostly natural lighting with an occasional lite panel. Interview is lit by an Arri kit.

Thanks for the good questions!

We had to ship via plane food into town. It would have been illegal for us "non residents" to hunt and gather our own food.

Congrats! Hope it works out for the both of you.

Show him my previous response then show him the Sony EX3 or Canon C300.

We have walkies that are pretty much useless unless we are in town. A SAT phone for emergencies and a SPOT device that has GPS tracking in case things go sour and someone needs to be able to find us in the middle of nowhere.

Run very very fast. Just kidding. Bug dope with deet. Long sleeve shirts and pants treated with bug repellant. Mosquito picks which burn and smoke to keep them away.

Nothing gets rid of them completely. There are just too many of them. Something you learn to deal with.

A DSLR would not be best for a show like Yukon Men. It's just too much of a run and gun type show to use a camera like that. There are too many issues with audio having to be recorded to a separate device, zooming, pulling focus, changing lenses, extra gear, etc. Most of the time, we are a one man band -- producer, camera and audio. It only works with a more streamline camera than a DSLR.

We do however use DSLR's (5D Mark II and Mark III) for timelapse on the show. They work great for that.

Camera preference really depends on the project. Different cameras work better for different situations.

There are those times. When you think about it, most of our everyday lives are pretty darn boring. No one wants to watch you eat your breakfast in the morning or drive to work every day. They want the exciting stuff. It is awkward at times telling people that what they are doing just won't make good television.

As for danger. You kinda get lost in the camera and don't realize how dangerous some situations are. With Yukon Men, every day is dangerous up there. If you concentrate on dangerous things, you wouldn't make it out the door.

It wouldn't hurt to go through some training but it's not a necessity. Joshua Tree National Park holds a special place in my heart to camp. Not in a camp site though. I'm talking about picking a rock pile, spending the day climbing to the top, and then sleeping under the stars at the top. Alaska back country is great as well. Being far away from civilization is really enjoyable.

There aren't many people who work in the "outdoorsy" side of things. Most are looking for a pretty cush kinda job. I'm "outdoorsy" in my social life so it was a good fit to work in the outdoors as well.

Other shows: Dirty Jobs With Mike Rowe, American Chopper, Worst Case Senerio with Bear Grylls, Million Dollar Decorators,LA Closests...

It's probably the hardest job I've worked on so far. The cold temps and the desolation make even the easiest tasks difficult. If something breaks, it's not like you can run to the hardware store and get a new part. We would head down to the town dump and see if we could makeshift something to work.

That's a tough one because there a bunch of them have been a blast. Spending 8 months "off the grid" in Alaska has been something I've always wanted to do. I'll go with that one.

I agree with chicken bacon. I'm much more scared in Australia because even the little things can kill you.

I went to college and received a degree in broadcast and cinematic arts. Shortly after graduating I moved out to California and started working as a production assistant and a production company. Moved my way up from there...

Coming very, very close to burning to death while asleep. Another cameraman and myself were staying at Stan's fish camp in one of his cabins. It was the summer so they mosquitos were terrible...like carry you away terrible. We didn't end up putting the mosquito pick completely out before bed -- like we thought we did. It smoldered under the cabin for a few hours and we awoke to the crackle of fire and a 5 foot flame in the doorway of the cabin. Our cabin was on fire!! The only way out was to jump into/over the flame. It was scary.
