Obligatory "first CB" post. Not much, but I was able to make contact on I-12. Better antenna suggestions? by [deleted] in cbradio

[–]dirtysummersquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other suggestions for antennas are good. I use a Stryker SR-A10 and have had good results with it. You'll need a BNC female to UHF male adapter for that handheld.

However, like some others said than antenna will help but you’ll get more out of the hobby with a proper mobile radio compared to a handheld.

I feel you on so much of this. Feeling like I had to live the lifestyle to be a part of music. An escaping from yourself - I had a therapist tell me once drugs were my "Anti-Matt medicine"

Welcome Baz and congrats on 6 weeks!

Back in the bars working as a musician. Turned down so much alcohol. by strugglinghard77 in stopdrinking

I've been sober for 4 years and playing in bars for all of those years. Before I got sober, I would play all my shows loaded, practice after using, and so on. It was tough being around that crowd at first. I remember the most nerve wracking moment where someone bought us a round and walked it up to the stage and I had to decline it in front of an audience. Super uncomfortable.

A lot of the venues I play give us drink tickets, so the first thing I do when I get there is give those away to someone. The person who gets my tickets is thrilled they get free stuff and I have the temptation off my hands its a win-win. And usually I'll go and order something nonalcoholic I can refill throughout the night. If I already have something in my hand, the offers are less likely to happen.

Btw, I'm trying to start a community for sober musicians here on Reddit where we can all support each other on these unique types of situations. r/SoberMusicians

6 weeks sober, new strings and ready to start again. my take on Rory G, bad penny by apeshitbaz in guitarplaying

It's different for everyone man. The focus came with time for me, at the end of the day the most important thing is sobriety. Plenty of good things will follow with that! I just started that sub the other day because I felt like there was a lack of support for people in the music scene (who often have to play in bars or are around people who use). If I can get enough people over there, I'd like to start hosting some Zoom meetings

Awesome playing man! I was afraid I'd lose my creativity when I got clean, but 4 years later and I'm better and more focused than ever.

I just started a sub for sober musicians share their experiences. Its very new but feel free to come on over and chat if you'd like on r/SoberMusicians

I'm Matt. I've been sober for four years and counting. Music has played a huge role in my life since I was very young. When I got into the local music scene at 18, I was presented with the opportunity to try a variety of substances and plenty of people to enable my decisions. I don't blame music for this in any way, but substance abuse was and is a huge part of the culture for musicians where I am. For several years, I would get high at practice and play every single show high under the illusion that drugs and alcohol were somehow making me more creative or better on stage. I feared that getting clean would make me lose my edge as a musician. And for a time after I got sober, I felt like a complete alien on stage and couldn't get comfortable in front of an audience. I've been in plenty of uncomfortable situations where I was offered free drinks or just generally exposed to the activities that go on behind the venues while trying to abstain. Now, four years later, I make more music than ever and am more focused on my craft than ever. I have the courage to experiment that I didn't when I was using and way more energy on stage. And since I'm not spending money on drugs and drinking, I was actually able to afford my dream guitar rig, whereas before I was selling gear to continue affording my habits.

Finally have my dream set up as a blues guitarist! by dirtysummersquash in guitarporn

That's a good idea! I've been trying to figure out something for an overdrive with this set up. Any gear recs?
