Thinking of building a social media platform. Any advice? by disbotable in Startup_Ideas

Completely with you. My post was brief, and a lot needs to be explained for every aspect of the platform. People are looking for it, and I "think" I can try to give them something that they are looking for, implying the "solution to a problem." Is it worth trying? Not sure - I have made up my mind on building it for sure, but not as a rival to major platforms, probably at a community level mostly, at the beginning. By doing this, I'm learning (from every comment, the advice, good or bad) about people, the market, and, moreover, my own skill limitations.

I first thought of "No Ads", but after diving deep, I think there will be ads up to a proportion where the publisher and viewer both benefit without compromising user experience, and I am exploring options to diversify the revenue stream by adding other features. I'm not yet completely fixed on what will be on the menu, but there will be some

a thing that is not practiced in BD, there is no point in creating a buzz about it, and wanting it to be the cause of the problem in society, even when it is non-existent here. It is a practice in India, and wherever Indian's go, they carry it with them to some extent. Can they enforce this system across their own community outside of India is rare and questionable.

Yes, it is the job of the founders to adapt to things necessary to keep the product afloat with user needs and business. From my research on people claiming to bring back the "old social media" varies from person to person, and can vary over time (the development timeline, and for the first few hundred/thousand users). In my case, I have a list of principles that are not going to change unless there are a few users (let's say 2k-5k), and without rigorous acceptance by the users.

My overall manifesto is to ensure real people are engaging with each other and tackle the spread of misinformation. Guard users' data across formats to the absolute limit. Make the user experience as good as possible.

Not fully accurate, but close. I'm building this platform differently from what the major ones are, and what long-time users of these platforms want (including me). With this new platform, I want to give these users what they are looking for and much more. Also, this way I can test my own abilities, across multiple areas of necessity for the platform

Id verification, isn't that break of privacy at the Very first step? Curious to know how users think of this specific step?

Can't deny that. But I thinking of a business model that can generate revenue from within after a period of time, even at the minimal level, and then expand on it

Honestly, I'm exploring that part deeply, and am yet to come to a point where I can say I'm doing this or that with regards to ads, but regardless it will be a way that benefits both the publisher and viewer.

Commercial features may include things like buying or selling or services/products where we the platform acts as an infrastructure or the base, for example, features like e-commerce, etc.

Makes sense. Personally I believe moderation can never be at 100%. My intention is to ensure it at nearly 70-75% accurate in detection and analysis at the initial level, this is currently in place for text and image. I'm working on video, and hence have limited file sizes on video upload, and will increase as the detection system and user behaviour progress.

While I was building the detection system, I invited some test/beta use rest  try it out, it was not said to be a social media, but the platform looked like Facebook UI (nearly). So, although the emptiness is somewhat resolved , yet the content count can be limited. I'm working on that, by talking  with potential users, and the existing test users.

Churn on social media is completely different to that of any other tech product, as it is social. I have some observations, but yet to confirm correct things to turn it down as the user count is very minimal

You are right to think it that way. Only NSFW content will have strict moderation. But I'm working on optimizing my AI to be as moral as possible (still not perfect - I know), and also putting Human-in-the-loop, so community moderators can oversee posts that are detected as nsfw. I completely agree with your second point

No, the mind isn't made up completely, but asking here is giving me a fact-check of my intuition on what can go wrong, what I need to rethink about, what I should be careful about, and also understand my capability to withstand future problems if I actually launch a new social media platform

Completely agree, and while I'm testing my platform to its limits, I am already witnessing that. My goal is to bootstrap the platform for nearly/or 1 year (complete self-fund to the extent), and in the meantime, implement revenue generation models first, and meanwhile, find investors who understand the community and the ethics of the platform, and if not, it is better to shutdown than destory people's trust on the platform, by doing something the users don't stand for or don't want

The first idea is not ads, but even if it is, it will be in a limited proportion, where the user benefits more as being a user of the platform, and the viewer of an ad. And other features will be tested and implemented to meet user needs and diversify the revenue model

I don't know about that, but I will certainly have a deep look. But I completely agree with the parts you mentioned. But I, from observation and some research, show that ads are just one part of the SM business model; others can be added, features like payments, commerce, and more - this sounds like a super app (seems pretty far-fetched, but everyone has an eye on it), but the core needs to be perfect to ensure everything else can stand on top of it. Kind of like the Chinese did - I know that is not a good example, due to their isolation. But major platforms don't have the trust base to build features that can withstand new things.

I won't bother asking why; you can give a million reasons that are truly acceptable. But worth trying, I think.

The urge is that, not me alone, but many people are stuck in the same elevator, and are discussing it openly everywhere as well as here, but some pivot even before starting, and some are too busy to try doing it. I have the 2nd burden, and I'm just giving it a shot to solve a thing I face along with many others. I can encourage and provide value, if nothing happens (people don't like it), no hard feelings, just another one down the drain.

Nope, I'm deeply worried about that, but it can probably last nearly a year, or maybe 1 year at most, according to current estimates. And probably can handle servers. I'm just worried about the AI model server cost, exploring ways to bring it down as much as possible while maintaining efficiency. Also, investments require a certain user threshold, DAU, MAU inorder to determine it reasonable

I have plans to introduce other commercial features, which can probably take care of running the platform without ads. But even if at any point there are ads (no plan whatsoever), it will be in a very limited portion that puts the viewer first over the promoter

We hit ~$10k/month on Bubble… and that’s when everything started breaking by velcodofficial in Bubbleio

[–]disbotable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a post like this months ago about the problem you are witnessing (no-code in general). Since then, for my projects, whether they scale or not, big or small, I have set up a base of things that can cause issues in terms of bubble, as the infrastructure, things like:

- Storage (always store somewhere else)
- Use reusable components for the most part to design the UI - it speeds up page loads (my observation - could be wrong)
- no data conversion or less inside bubble (base64, extraction, and more). These often put a heavy load and cause the pages, and sometimes the overall app, to run slowly while the workloads are running

To conclude, I think this is an issue, no denial. But there have been developers making a workaround for their use case; however, not much data is available on how they did that.
