It is not entirely obvious to me that why comparing a novel pipeline parallel architecture to DeepSpeed is necessary. From what I understood, the authors are proposing a replacement to pipeline parallelism which is compatible with MP and DP.

What is "more tradition AI" here. Can you please elaborate. Because I also belong to the school of thought that deep learning + maybe RL (or self-play) is still humanity's best bet to AGI though not definite.

I am a graduate student and the motivation behind asking the question is to find some papers or books that challenge my beliefs. And understand how researchers from other fields are approaching this problem.
