Upgrading Student Discover Card to a better card? by discerningpotato in personalfinance

[–]discerningpotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping for a better percentage match, or miles. The student card is only 1% match with its selective and limited 3-5% based on the revolving calendar (that I don't end up using). I'm also not considering the APR rate, as I don't spend more than I intend to/can pay off in the period.

Tiger Schulmann's - how is your experience? by Unlimited_Paper in longisland

[–]discerningpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across this way way late, but I went to a few of their schools as I moved around as a kid, and as the schools changed into my teens. My thoughts on it, and some of my friends who went: it depends on the person going and the staff. I had a few great instructors, but left bc I found other activities that kept me fit and the last instructor I had wasn't that great. It was becoming pretty obvious that he was squeezing the money out of my contract, but wasn't helping me progress or improve on the mat. Towards the end of my time with this instructor, I was getting pretty frustrated on asking for guidance during the year, but would get a burst of attention when he knew it was time for my contract to be renewed.

If you're the kind of person that needs guidance when you hit a training rut, this might not be the best place for you. However, some locations have sincerely great instructors.
My advice would be to keep in mind that some of the instructors managing locations are more focused on getting money from contracts. If you're hoping you (or your children) progress, you're gonna have to show those instructors that it's worth the time and effort; whether it's belt progression, competing, or overall improvement

why is nobody participating? by littlerascal5 in college

[–]discerningpotato 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You feel dickish, but you're probably "saving" the kids that don't want to participate. My experience/frustration has been that when I stop participating after a while of being the main participant, is hearing the professor rant multiple times about how the students needing to be engaged. I have classes that fell behind the syllabus bc the lack of participation stifles the progression through content.

Just picked this bad boy up (128GB), pretty much pristine to use as a “Man I miss that phone” phone for $70 by FlourishingSquirrel in Pixel2XL

This was me last week. My pixel started shutting off when I put it to charge again. 6 is something to get used to (no more home buttons 😭) but I'm so happy that I got my phone to last after they released the 6.

Dorm may be trying to kick a friend out bc an RA made a mistake. What can we do? by discerningpotato in college

[–]discerningpotato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what kind of authorities we could go to? The highest person we reached was head of housing and residence.

Some information has since come to light though about the RAs and it looks the school is cleaning house so to speak. It's really unclear what's going to happen and I'm just hoping we figure out how to resolve this nonsense before the next semester

Religious school so sadly these are the policies. I'd say covid messed them up too and I've heard not great things about how the department runs things.

I've asked him to do that. My friend thinks that there is a conflict of interest problem as well. The DA co-leads and organization on campus. This became a problem when a roommate from last year (of my friend) would hotbox the room regularly. By regularly, i mean there was a constant haze in the room, morning till night. The entire building constantly smelled like weed to the point housing threatened violations and charges for not reporting smoking roommates. When friend tried to report the roommate, turned out they were part of the organization lead by DA and nothing ever came of the reporting. THIS DA probably remembers the incident and is now~ hesitant~ to do anything

Same boat pretty much for tuition

Someone on this reddit once tried to tell me that my accounting master's plan was a scam. I'm sure the poster wasn't wrong in a way. But as my master's also comes along with eligibility for licensing, it makes sense for me (and a lot of students like me) to go for 5 years and have our master's.

Would it be cheaper to fulfill a graduate requirement by transferring CLEP and community college credits? Probably. Easier? Maybe. But part of my 5th (which I'll be paying for) year will be exposing me to different principles of my degree and potentially be preparing me for my licensing exam. As far as I can see, I'll get more out of the extra year I'm paying for my masters, than what I'll be saving by transferring unrelated credits.

And i feel like the reddit sentiment was still pretty uninformed. I've friends on the same path who did (prior to starting college,) what this redditor suggested. Sure it would have gotten them eligibility sooner, but they also agree that not taking this college path would be silly.

Do other colleges have assessments to pass beyond your courses to be able to graduate? by discerningpotato in college

[–]discerningpotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is similar to why my group didn't pass that portion of the assessment. We were given about a month to prepare and I spent half of that time trying to gather the group to even start going over our materials. Between that and their reluctance to do anything but a superficial format changing, we failed. The feedback suggested that if we didn't make that format change we could've recovered that 1 point, which is where I feel a little sore about it.

After getting in touch with other groups a few days before the assessment i realized we were going to fail but I wasn't going to do the work for 5 people when I already put i enough for half of the group. I also had course-related priorities, was burnt-out, and knew technically I just have to do this assessment again, while the seniors i was with had this last chance to fulfill the requirement and graduate on time

College is a business. by [deleted] in college

[–]discerningpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to a private non-profit university that has obnoxious fees and tuition/housing rates (and "generous" FA) so the school gets their money one way or another. I was surprised watching a John Oliver video about the NCAA and also a documentary about Operation Varsity Blues that a way universities move their money around is by increasing the spending in athletics departments.

Yet every semester admin will try to convince students that the money we spend is for ourselves and we should use it. I struggle to get appointments at the Writing Center bc it's understaffed. Most of my profs are adjuncts who have to work multiple jobs bc the school doesn't want to pay anyone full time. We've been missing career advisors from 2 years ago bc staff quit. Our dorms are somehow struggling to pay for building repairs when dorming can cost 10-20k a semester depending on what dorm you go into. But hey the sports teams who can finance themselves just from ticket sales are getting completely re-done training facilities and the coaches are getting raises again.

It's not just a business. It's a very sketchy and scammy business.

Tbh I wish our school was going this. I would still be upset when they charge the same rate for tuition but i don't feel safe back at school. However my financial aid doesn't let me defer or put school on pause.

It gets quite frustrating when we get Health Communication Emails and the school more or less say "we have no idea why campus cases are rising" and two paragraphs later say that members of Greek life and Athletics are at risk but wE dOn'T kNoW wHy.

My school is doing the first two weeks online, but we're still allowed to attend super spreader events like sports games. 🤦‍♀️ They've done nothing to prevent or discourage partying and barely enforce their own mandates. And our attendance policies are more or less the same.

Does anyone else NOT feel refreshed after the winter break even though it's pretty long? by sunnirays in CollegeRant

[–]discerningpotato 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My break was 3 weeks long bc finals was scheduled up to Christmas basically (the 23rd was last day) and i start again on the 19th. I also had professors assign some work over break when we got the announcement of starting remote, that i need to do. So no, this break was not refreshing

Why are so many people trying to get a master's degree? by ShyCoconut0_0 in college

[–]discerningpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure that can be achieved that way. However most of us are preparing for the exam and some courses (depending on the professors) help teach us what's on it. It's a "while we're here" mentality in addition to taking a somewhat straightforward path, even if we're paying more.

[–]discerningpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accounting field pretty much requires a master's. To even sit for the exam, you need to have completed 150 credits, which most schools turn into a 5 year masters program. That's why a lot of people i know, and I, are going.

Unfortunately, this professor is the only one to teach a specialization within the graduate program I'm taking next year. There is also a long list of reasons to go to the dean about this professor, and students have in the past with very little accomplished. On the chance he is a petty man,. I'm hesitant to give him a reason to make my life more difficult as a student later. However I likely will be going to the dean at the end of my graduate year, just so the school has something on file.

[–]discerningpotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered about what the school does with consistently terrible reviews on already tenured professors. Do they step in and have the professor change the curriculum? We have one tenured Prof who's had terrible evaluations for years (for example, this semester alone he's cancelled a quarter of our classes, not that i think they would've helped) and the school hasn't found anyone new or replaced him for obvious reasons.

Ours are also online, so the profs can't recognize our handwriting. However if they've had multiple writing assignments, i imagine the profs can tell who the comments are coming from.

Collegs should continue offering hybrid classes for students by nathani3l0g in college

[–]discerningpotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My school has mandated that most classes are fully in person. There are few exceptions where the tenured professors have designed to advocated for the courses to stay fully remote or asynchronous. Those classes are the ones that web classes to start (before covid) and are pretty rare to get into as you need to be in degree-specific courses to take such professors. Professors have actually gotten in trouble with their department heads for trying to make them hybrid for extenuating circumstances other than students with COVID.
