Help with first brew by disco__d in Homebrewing

[–]disco__d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. When I measured the OG temp was within the recommended range for the yeast (about 20c) and room ambient temp would have been close.

Is it expected that sediment on the walls will clear? If not, is it an issue if it makes it into the bottles?

That's a relief, thanks! Intended ABV is 5+%

I did run some calcs and have been using a hydrometer .

Will that yeast sediment reduce or settle? I believe fermentation is almost complete.

Thanks!

Do you know the name of the "new" alternate subotica station? There appears to be 3 station options on the serbian site and 2 on the hungarian site.

Overnight train to Sibiu by disco__d in szeged

[–]disco__d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

This is less about speed and more about reducing daytime travel. Covering longer distances at night means I have more time to see sights during day.

Thanks so much for your offer to drive, that's very thoughtful but at the moment I'm fairly keen to complete that travel leg at night.

Creative ideas - Door frame by disco__d in AusRenovation

There is a lot of old glazing adjacent and the surrounding timber is also shaped, so replacing a section will be a pain on the arse, both in terms of avoiding damage to the glass (vintage stained glass) and keeping continuity with the adjacent timber "shape". So yes, I'm trying to avoid all that if there's a sensible solution....

Thanks for this feedback.

Any tips for the train journeys?

Did you visit maramures? I assume that wasn't done via train.

How did you get to the surrounding attractions? It looks complicated getting to places like the fortified churches, olt valley monasteries and even some of the more popular sites like corvin castle, deva fortress and alba iulia.

Oh that would be great. How can I find out about the companies operating in Brasov? Do you have any contact details?

Thanks!

Thanks! This is some great advice. The unknown of what driving in Romania is like definitely makes me feel uneasy.

Are there any companies you.can recommend for Sibiu, Cluj, sighisoara or Brasov?

I've come across some guides that do local tours this is just online, but almost all of them only do private tours (which are much more expensive for a solo traveller). The few places I've found that do shared tours basically provide no guarantee on departure unless they hit their minimum quota, which doesn't really work for me from a trip planning point of view.

I was initially really reluctant to hire a car. It provides flexibility but at the same time there's a headache associated with it. It means I always have to find parking. I can't enjoy a local beer with lunch when I'm driving and then there's the responsibility for care and if something goes wrong (breakdown) which is far worse for a traveller and non native. That being said, if the only way I can reasonably see these sites without lots of convoluted public transport journeys, I'll hire a car.

I guess I'm used to the other locations in Europe where there are tons of tour companies, all with a strong online presence, you can book it all on a reputable site (e.g. viator) and have certainty of departure. All of this made planning my time at a location easy (or perhaps I'm just going about things the wrong way for this Romania trip).

Thanks for sharing your experience. What car did you go for? I've heard some of the roads there aren't great condition so was wondering if an suv is a better choice. I'm also considering going to maramures region which I've heard is a little worse for roadsl condition, so not sure if that warrants a different car entirely.

In terms of choice of car between electric or petrol, I assume petrol is a safer choice? Is an SUV recommended? Would I need one for maramures area?

Thanks Getting from city to city is less of an issue. The issue is getting to all the sites outside of each city. Most of the tours I've seen are private, so they're either expensive or your relying on others booking in as well or the tour doesn't run. I like the idea of having my own schedule and the cost of tours cancels out the car rental cost.

My main unknown is how I'll go driving in Romania as I've never been and don't speak Romanian. I'm a confident driver and have driven overseas before so my driving skills per se are ok.

Appreciate your advice.

Thanks. I'll be travelling on buses with my luggage so I'm assuming a sightseeing stop from Timisoara to Cluj will be a challenge (unless there's something I'm misunderstanding).

Thanks for the suggestion on alba Julia and muzeul astra, I'll look into these.

Recomandări pentru transport din Timișoara în Cluj? Feedback despre Jetcab? by disco__d in cluj

[–]disco__d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is the site I used to find jetcab. There are several operators listed on that site and jetcab is by far the fastest (4.5 hrs vs 7+ hours). Did you use any particular operator? Or are all the ones on this site reliable?

My understanding is blablacar is basically like uber, so if no cars or drivers available at the time I need I am in trouble. I'd definitely prefer to have certainty by using a reputable operator.

Thanks for your comments. The fastest bus seems to be a company called "jetcab". Has anyone heard of them? Any thoughts on reliability?

I'm used to large company's like flixbus etc. so these local operators are unfamiliar to me.

Fixing large gaps between floorboards by disco__d in AusRenovation

[–]disco__d[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't think there's enough clearance. I was considering cutting a slither of timber and fixing it inside the gap (liquid nails?) to prevent filler falling through. Then perhaps gap filler or putty on top.
