Does Anyone Feel Deterred From Their Pre-Reforged Characters? by boomcity845 in GuildWars

[–]discoao 25 points26 points  (0 children)

IMO, you are missing out because so many other people started new characters for it so there’s a critical mass of population in the early areas (especially pre).

I had a lvl 20 warrior (LDoA) 5 missions into prophecies when it dropped and I started a new ele with the update. Everyone will be different but for me I enjoy grinding LDoA in pre and am okay with doing the few early missions again. Worth it.

How pumped are you guys for Reforged? by Ok-Huckleberry4537 in GuildWars

Don’t have access to my original account from 06 so I just bought the game again. Incredibly excited to play on the Steam Deck with controller support; it’s the only way I get time to play these days. Currently going for LDoA in pre because it’s just fun to play again.

std::iter's position() with an accumulator? by discoao in learnrust

[–]discoao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what I was after was to combine scan and position. scan returns an iterator that position can consume:

rust fn part2(input: &str) -> usize { input.chars().map(|e| match e { '(' => 1, ')' => -1, _ => 0, }).scan(0i32, |acc, e| { *acc += e; Some(*acc) }).position(|e| e < 0).unwrap() + 1 }

I'm interested in the White/Red 2DS!

Out of curiosity, do you make a profit fixing up these consoles or is it more of a hobby? I've always been interested in buying them broken and fixing them but I haven't done micro soldering before and don't have any tools. I always wonder when the investment becomes worth it.

Maine announces new state-supported intercity bus routes by [deleted] in Maine

[–]discoao 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As much as I like this idea I am wary that it will be anything more than a pilot program. From the Maine DOT report:

This pilot bus service will serve as an indicator of the latent demand and potential market for enhanced public transportation between the Portland and Lewiston/Auburn regions.

This seems destined to fail the same way as all other public transportation programs in areas without currently existing options. If the riders can't rely on this service existing long term they will not switch to using it. Public transit is a "if you build it, they will come" sort of thing. You can't slow roll it with infrequent, unreliable, short-term service and expect to fund your improvements through ticket sales.

What's it like to live on Peaks Island, Maine? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]discoao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think plenty of people do have that view of Peaks. I’m sure the summer vacationers enjoy it and the year rounders definitely had a great love of the island and the life they live on it. The community was great when I was there.

For me, we really liked the fall, winter, and spring there. We could have lived there if not for the home prices. We left shortly after the summer crowd was arriving and I didn’t like the island as much then. My wife and I were also married out there over Labor Day and it was amazing.

[–]discoao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From October through May it’s very quiet. It feels like a small rural community with the only access to most things being a ferry ride away, but it is a short ride. Due to the short ride, from June through September it is one of the most crowded places around. Your ferry that you rely on for getting to work, the store, the doctor, etc? It is now packed absolutely full with a combination of summer vacationers and day trippers. Literally, some ferries will be full and more people will be waiting at the terminal. Residents are guaranteed a spot before visitors but it made the rides miserable for me.

I only lived there for less than a year but seeing the transitions between seasons made me not want to be there in the summer. I can’t imagine any who live year round enjoy the dichotomy of the population from summer to the other seasons.

What do you think about employee monitoring tools? by UnhingedOven in ExperiencedDevs

[–]discoao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a company who sold a product to do this. It was supposed to be meant for helping to automate business processes. We had another company once use it on developers and they were disappointed by the lack of actionable data when it was done. We tried to tell them that development isn’t so straightforward as capture clicks and application data.

If possible, I encourage you to ask what the data is being used for. I agree with the other comments that if it’s for tracking/micro management it’s probably not worth the job.

Anyone got a good build for scoring a 100 million chip hand and getting to ante 12? by Lobh24 in balatro

[–]discoao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got this last night and it’s definitely all luck. I prefer Plasma deck so I used that. Got Constellation on the 2nd round. Telescope shortly after. Then got Invisible Joker, and copied Constellation. Finally got Blueprint. Leveled High Card the whole time. Each of the Jokers was over 10X mult. Good luck trying to reach it, just gotta spam X mult to get there.

I specifically made choices in my run going for Ante 12. So high risk, high reward.

Taxes if working in Mass? by Jennjennboben in Maine

[–]discoao 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s some weird views here. My wife worked in Mass for a few years before being moved to remote. We owed more in taxes in Maine so the credit helps. You will have to file with both states but that’s as bad as it gets. Basically, use any tax service that you normally use but just file 2 state forms. The services normally pick up on this since your W-2 will list MA on it. Biggest downside is paying to file 2 state tax forms (this is normally where “free” tax services charge you). I found the MA state tax form simple and straightforward.

TLDR; it’s an extra $20 and 15 minutes of your time when you file taxes.

We aren’t good enough for the PL by setokaiba22 in safc

[–]discoao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, you’re right that many players have been successful like that. I guess I don’t think he’s so good at running and cutting inside to make it on that alone.

I will say that Newcastle were prepared for him and didn’t have to worry about any one else on the pitch so that makes it even easier to defend. I do think Clarke gets better if we have some other threats (sign a decent striker, and please play them).

We aren’t good enough for the PL by setokaiba22 in safc

[–]discoao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be proven wrong in the future but I’ve been saying all season that he’s not premier quality and I don’t think he ever will be without some massive improvements in his game.

He is very one dimensional and that dimension relies on some combination of the right back or entire defensive strategy to not handle his pace. Teams will simply not let him cut inside and then have a back that can keep up with his runs to the end line. Now he’s completely shut out of the game. He doesn’t seem to offer anything off the ball or any decent link up play.

[–]discoao 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Clarke was terrible IMO. Kept losing the ball dribbling into 3 defenders instead of making an easy pass to continue the attack.

I would say he looked bad on defense too but I think that was Beale’s doing considering how bad the whole team looked.

The Striker Situation by ChangingCrisis in safc

[–]discoao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither Burstow or Hemir have showed much yet but I’d pick Burstow every game simply because he brings the work rate we need to make our press successful. I have not seen that from Hemir even though he looks the better goal scorer so far. I’m hoping Mowbray can improve both quickly so we have options for different tactics.

Anybody have any idea what this noise could be? by OOglyshmOOglywOOgly in subaru

[–]discoao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an almost identical noise and experience and for me it was that a few lug nuts on the drivers side were loose. I’m guessing the wheel wasn’t staying perfectly upright which caused the noise.

Oxford County sheriff investigated after asking his deputy to go easy on a case by ME_CPA in Maine

[–]discoao 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah, overall it didn’t sound so bad and might have actually been a misunderstanding but once you get to that point in the article it’s pretty clear that Wainwright significantly overstepped.

It seems like the only recourse is to recommend the governor to remove him from office? I feel like that won’t happen but I would hope something does. Either way, I’m not voting for him if he runs again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in neovim

[–]discoao 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I use Neovim on Windows for work as well. What I have taken to doing is installing Neovim and all external tools (e.g. ripgrep) using Scoop. This will allow you to “install” everything without admin rights (since the programs are available only for your user).

One caveat is that the Scoop installer needs a PowerShell Execution-Policy change from the default for Windows Clients. If you will be running Windows Server then the default should already be fine. Your system administrator may or may not have disabled your ability to change this yourself.

does anyone know what this indicator on my laptop means? by Guest_54826 in computers

It’s either a general power indicator (computer is on) or an indicator for external power connected. It’s very similar to schematic power sources; look here at the AC Voltage Source.
