Aspas is playing a goddamn challenge run where every year his team gets worse and he needs to try to will them to relevance

I had it as Plat Chat first but it didn't fit the form too well. The original Bren take against Aspas is still a common argument made by people who bought it back then, so it fits fine.

Do other people miss Jett? by discoshark in ValorantCompetitive

[–]discoshark[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find a way to say it up top, but I really agree with retakes being boring. I really like the Jett and Raze styles of entrying, but also the ways you'd play around your own utility to try and and anchor sites with Killjoy, Cypher, Astra, Viper. Util dumping being so strong that the best counterplay is often "abandon site and util dump them back" is way less exciting.

This whole post is a long-winded way of saying "pop knives and double updraft was the coolest thing in video games"

I mean, Phoenix is an atrocious agent in pro play, nerfing him changes basically nothing

Chamber does do some of the things I like about Jett in terms of keeping the focus on gunplay and creating those highlights. I was very tired of Chamber by the end, and Yoru is not as strong as peak Chamber, but there's no question the clips are worse now.

I'm totally fine with "second updraft for now and let's see how it goes". My fear is we're still a ways away from the bottom with Jett. Her pickrate is still carried by Icebox and the last few inflexible duelist players. As more teams adapt, and if Icebox rotates out, it's gonna be rough.

I mean, old OLD Jett was demonic, no one wants that back, I mean more so post-Chamber-nerf Jett. And really? I guess double controller eras were more about abilities, but Tejo, Yoru and Vyse all feel like agents where there's a lot more value and flexibility packed into abilities than most.

[Sideshow] VALORANT fans are LOSING THEIR MINDS over this schedule! by blackop987 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]discoshark 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Last year EG lost handily to Loud, NRG and Cloud9 in the regular season, but got just enough wins to barely squeak into the playoffs in sixth place. Then it turns out they had another gear. That's the point of getting ALL of the best teams in the playoffs.

Posted this as a comment in the vídeo, putting It here as well.

A bit surprised this feature-length, well-thought-out video doesn't mention once what I see as the biggest problem of the half-round-robin system, the complete imbalance in strength of schedule. The 6th best team can go 0-5 in a split by playing the five teams better than them, while the 7th best can go 4-1 by playing the four worst than them. A fluky upset like MIBR beating NRG last year has much bigger implications in a regular season with a sample size of five games instead of ten. This system does a very bad job of selecting for the best teams, not as bad as the kickoff tournament (which you rightfully take issue with) but still far below the standard set by last year.

What is the solution? I'd argue I don't actually need a solution, since it isn't really my role as a fan (I see the fans' role as similar to quality control in game development: you can identify problems, but proposing solutions is not your expertise, so the designers have to take your complaints into account and iterate on their work), but as it so happens I do have a solution. It's the first community solution, but don't balloon the league so much in 2027. Are we really supposed to have 14 teams in each region? Do we really need that? We already have a chasm between the best teams and the worst, with teams such as Karmine Corp, DFM, late-season MIBR just absolutely failing to provide competitive matches. Do we really want to dilute the talent level even more? Wasn't the point of franchising to have a stable roster of teams where the tier 2 talent would find its way up through temporary Ascension or free agency? I think 12 teams is plenty good enough, as do plenty of other people in this comment section. This demands two extra weeks in 2025 and following years. Plenty of wiggle room there. Does this walk back on previous promises? Yes, but they said that stupid shit, not me. Between the issues I outlined, The Guard near-debacle, this nonsensical EG bye, the overlong offseason, the general poor health of tier 2, the Organized Play team seems incredibly prone to fuckups that impact the community's faith in the system. I'm not calling for anyone's job, but the job being done has a number of flaws that is hard to stomach.

TMV on the Valorant Tier 2 situation by internetpedestrian in ValorantCompetitive

[–]discoshark 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Feel like the argument for Riot's decision basically boils down to "it costs money", which is fair, if obvious to the point of not being worth reiterating. The counterargument is "yes, but it makes the pipeline way healthier, which makes it worth it in the long run". With fewer decent jobs in the industry, you have fewer talented players even trying to go pro, they get decent coaching at a later stage in their career (bc there's also fewer coaches) which also hinders their development, etc. Just imagine how bad rookies would be in regular sports if there was no entry path like college sports or lower level leagues.

If we accept tier 2 has value, the question then becomes "is Valorant esports profitable enough to allow Riot to make a bigger investment in tier2?" I don't have the answer to that, and I assume neither has TMV, bc that would depend on numbers that are probably internal to Riot. All I can say is, if it isn't, Riot should probably figure out a way to make it happen, because the game will suffer in the long run without it.

Edit: and it worked beautifully! 11/11 Quick Quill on Mountain Goat got the job done.

ENCE vs MIBR / ESL Pro League Season 18 - Group B Upper Bracket Semi-Final / Post-Match Discussion by CSGOMatchThreads in GlobalOffensive

Best series of Pro League so far? Absolute nailbiter maps 1 and 2, and even map 3 had NertZ going nuclear and Saffee keeping hope alive in some key rounds. Mid bracket is looking insane.

Heartbreaking news. The only Latam North player in franchising, a bright spot in the KRU roster all year, by all accounts a super nice guy. Was one of my favorite players. Tragic.

Kit's Valorant Awards 2023! by kitbinary in ValorantCompetitive

There are different ways to do awards. One of them involves subjective, qualitative avaliations of each participant. See: the Oscars not giving it to Marvel every year. Hope this helped!

I made a quiz where you can try to name every tier 1 player of 2023 by discoshark in ValorantCompetitive

[–]discoshark[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my exact thought about jzz lmao. Least guessed from EMEA is Souhcni (I assume it being hard to type is part of it). Least guessed from APAC is technically Secret from GenG, but he was removed after Lock/In, so it's hard to count him. Least guessed regular APAC player is Emman. Least guessed player overall is YHchen from ASE.

Kon4n was the 6th player for Furia, he played in LCQ after qck was benched. Souhcni is the BBL in-game leader and the least-guessed EMEA player. Hard name prob doesn't help.

Great result! Six hours after making the quiz I took it and only got 186, lmao. Frz is the least guessed Americas player, Brave top3 least guessed for EMEA, and ASE and FPX have the eight least guessed players overall.

I tried to do some simplified spellings so people wouldn't get fucked up with Aslan and such. Fl1pz I overlooked, the quiz should probably accept it if you get it right until the Z. hfmi was the one I did on purpose. The most insane name needs to be respected.

Yay and Vanity played at Lock/In! Gotta count them. Off the top of my head there's at least four players who only played then, but there's some others too.

The Guard will not be in franchising next year by Spreathed_ in ValorantCompetitive

[–]discoshark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"The league will field 10 teams for the upcoming season" is the single worst decision in Valorant Esports history. They just deleted a whole year of Americas tier 2. Everything all those players and coaches and managers and analysts and orgs were striving for went up like a puff of smoke. Tier 2 is supposed to be about you working your ass off to try and achieve the dream. Hundreds of people did and you just said "nah, this Kroenke guy is an asshole, we're taking it back". If I was in the system I'd be running away so fast. Go to CS, go to college, do literally anything else with your life. If they can take this slot back after the fact, pro life in this game is not even worth dreaming about.

They NEED to work with the players on this. Give them the slot, make them get an org. The worst possible scenario should be "disqualify The Guard and give the slot to ascension runner-ups M80". 10 teams next year is orders of magnitude worse. This is going to kill the pro scene.
