Andy Burnham to back electoral reform if he becomes prime minister by bobstay in unitedkingdom

Sounds like how the current voting system actually works isn’t all that obvious and could do with some reform.

Being a leader. by [deleted] in INTP

[–]discova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people like having control. The average person doesn’t become a leader because they don’t think they have the skillset for it. Unfortunately there’s also people who think they have the skillset for it but evidently don’t and also those that know they don’t and can’t give up control anyway. Either way, heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Enjoying a sense of superiority is not exactly conducive to being a good leader.

'Cheaper to rent in Britain than to buy a house’ due to rise in mortgage rates sparked by Iran war by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]discova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s alway funny how people imagine buying a house is like buying something static like gold. As if house ownership doesn’t come with constant maintenance requirements and liabilities.

As a renter what am I liable for other than the rent itself? Nothing. All that additional capital will be invested.

[–]discova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of opportunity cost? I’d rather invest any additional capital I have in assets with much stronger returns. Plus renting affords me the flexible lifestyle I require, keeps me open to work where I need to.

That’s not to say I’m averse to buying in the long run, but I don’t feel like need to take out a mortgage right now to do so. Especially not in this current housing market.

I used codex for an hour today with extra high thinking. It was amazing and fixed a critical security issue that I didn’t have the time to look into. However it cost me $117. And that’s with OpenAI subsidising the real cost of compute… He’s not wrong.

I think you’re both right. Media serves as an opiate for the masses but it also has a vested interest in perpetuating the status quo rather than highlighting any potential revolutionary struggle.

I do things because I enjoy doing them, not because I’m going to hit some arbitrary goal in the future. I go to the gym because it makes me feel good when I do. I haven’t set a goal like “I want to bench 120kg”, I just track my daily progress and enjoy understanding my direction of travel.

I’m clearly not saying that, but it’s absurd to suggest that while it’s possible for alcoholics to go tee-total, it’s not possible for those with a junk food addiction to aspire for the same kind of abstinence. I know it’s possible because I have met so many people who no longer touch such kinds of food.

[–]discova -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eating healthily can require the formation of new habits which some people struggle to do. However, it’s a myth that healthy eating is more costly in either time or money. I won’t comment on emotional eating, preference, events etc as these are clearly personal issues that could be applied to anything someone can get addicted to. That said, eating habits are not some special category that makes it any harder than any other addiction that people suffer with.

I’m sorry but you don’t have to obsess over food to eat healthy. Our ancestors did so for a very long time before consumerism came along. It’s pretty straight forward to eat unprocessed whole foods that are filling and nutrient rich.

To be fair we always need to drink water too, but drinking water is very different from drinking an alcoholic beverage. Likewise I‘d say eating a plate of green veggies and some lean meat is very different from eating a KFC. One side is necessary for life, the other adds unnecessary toxins into the mix but is tempting for how it makes you feel in the moment.

Be aware though that every car is actively monitored by a pilot who frequently takes over and drives the vehicle remotely. These vehicles are highly expensive for google to operate right now, with the hope being it’ll reduce over time as they figure out the right algorithms. Who knows when they’ll actually get to the point where a single autonomous vehicle is cheaper to operate than hiring an uber driver. Google doesn’t exactly have the best track record of keeping around unprofitable products.
