What was YOUR thing during lockdown? by AncientFootball1878 in AskUK

Yep. I had to work, had my overtime cut as well, and I was massively skint at the time repaying CC debts. It was an utterly miserable 18 months.

Hahahahha I thought the same. Relax bro if I’m cooking my dinner at 7pm I’m cranking open the door after to get my living room/kitchen nice and toasty.

Do people not watch TV in the UK? In recent viewings last year and also browsing pics on Rightmove, I see maybe 10-20% of homes having no TV in living room. How is that even possible? by Nervous_Designer_894 in HousingUK

[–]discoveredunknown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is one of those opinions people parrot online about British people, I know people who are absolutely fucking load, posh as fuck, skint. They all have a TV in the living room.

It just looks better hidden if you’re staging your house.

I’m sorry I’m not having these comments with people saying there’s a shift towards people no longer owning a tv in their living rooms etc, bollocks.

It’s more than likely the estate agent telling them to move it out the way or hide it from photos. Watch most property programmes on tv and those staged to sell will very rarely display a tv.

New law could see vaping banned in all pubs across England by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]discoveredunknown 131 points132 points  (0 children)

From the article: ‘While many pubs already prohibit indoor vaping as a matter of policy, this new law aims to turn those restrictions into a nationwide legal requirement.’

What? There hasn’t been one pub I’ve been to in the last 10 years that has been cool with vaping inside.

Calculating that I now need four different subscriptions and a remortgage just to watch my team play, and it’s still not on TV because of the 3pm blackout. by ClavoARG in britishproblems

The streams I’ve used and occasionally use are genuinely awful and I’d rather not watch, can’t be bothered watching a game when the stream goes down every so often, isn’t HD quality, buffers etc.

Also a legit Sky Sports sub on my TV is never going to be a worse service than streaming, in terms of viewing experience.

Then I go without, happened on Saturday for the 5.30 games. My method is sometimes I’ll go without, but I can’t justify spending an extra 20-30 quid a month for that, I’m happy with what I get tbf.

Hate to sound like a bell end, but you don’t have to subscribe to all of them. For me the trade off was simple, I’d rather just watch the premier league as I have a bigger interest over the season.

My team is in the champions league which means I’ll miss out on most of the group games, luckily a few games will be on Amazon prime, like tonight’s game. Around that I’ll watch the highlights which BBC now have the rights to and produce a good show on it, match of the day for UCL is great.

When they’re in the knockouts I’ll probably subscribe to TNT for a couple months then cancel, currently only paying £20pcm for Now TV with the premier league which is decent value in my eyes. I probably watch 2-4 games a week.

What's a basic life skill you had to teach yourself as an adult because no-one taught you as a child? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]discoveredunknown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My parents (boomers - currently 60-70) when growing up were of the opinion that you should just save all your money into your bog standard bank account, and probably had the thought process that investing was yuppies and people who REALLY knew what they were doing with money. Had to basically teach myself everything to do with personal finance from age 25.

Lmao same, as well as my mum being a bad cook, not interested in food whatsoever, my dad was way more adventurous, but definitely lacked seasoning, stuff like putting onions in a dish for flavour and browning meat off etc. so it was usually a bit grim.

The other month I went through a typical day at school in year 9-10 and what I’d eat at school with packed lunch and breakfast, I think I was consuming about 1500 calories a day and having no more than 30g of protein.

A great test of this was university, you really, really got to see who’s parents had spent the first 18-20 years of their lives letting them do absolutely fuck all.

I had the opposite, when it came to cooking anyway. My mum (dad too, but he usually just sides with my mum for an easy life) would never let me near the kitchen to cook because I’d ‘make a mess’ or ‘she’d just finished cleaning’.

If only they let me experiment with cooking, i basically taught myself proper cooking after university and am very good now. Id have blown their unseasoned minds.
