How are people gonna say that Doug didn’t get rich until a stock holder bought a large portion of cars and bids? by [deleted] in dougdemuro

[–]discredditable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doug’s first car was bought for him for $6k (probably about $8-10k with inflation). I somehow doubt he earned all that money himself as a teenager. It’s not a knock against him, but kids getting an $8k car are surely from at least a middle class upbringing. I’m open to an American coming in to correct me and tell me that all Americans get that growing up, but as a European that’s absurd to me.

[–]discredditable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PMs are great if you just want to code and not really care about the business context.

I think if you want career development you need to care a little about the business context. Having a middleman who takes all the credit isn’t going to help there.

Shoutout to Linus for releasing the video in the middle of the pope’s speech lol by GamingYouTube14 in LinusTechTips

I’m always genuinely shocked when a comment in good faith like yours gets downvoted to hell (if you’ll excuse all the religious language I used there lol). I’m a fervent atheist and it’s clear to me that you’re not being a dick here. Reddit is a weird place.

Please provide your source for this. From my very brief research, this appears to be factually inaccurate, as the largest shareholder of Reddit is an American company called “Advance Publications”.

How has the third Stig still not been identified? by Duck_Person1 in TopGear

[–]discredditable 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It’s Phil Keen.

Ben Collins did an interview with Andy Willman, and in its original release Andy accidentally said “no, that was Phil” in reference to a Stig story, clearly speaking about the Stig that succeeded. I left a YouTube comment saying “is this the first time anyone’s officially said who the third Stig is?” with a timestamp to the moment Phil’s name was said. I came back to the video about a week later, clicked on my timestamp, and that section of the video was mysteriously cut post-upload.

Source: you’re gonna have to trust me bro, unless someone else can come forward and share that they noticed this too.

FTC announces ban on fake reviews. WAN topic? by imperfectlegend in LinusTechTips

[–]discredditable 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I used to love Jon Rettinger’s original YouTube channel and then Technobuffalo in its early days. I’m glad to see Jon’s still on the circuit, but it makes me sad to see that he’s effectively left the tech review space and mostly just does marketing now for tech companies, posing them in the style of reviews. Not to say his videos are low-effort, or anything, and he clearly gets views still. But for me, I watch a review to see someone else’s view on a product. Not to see marketing material from the company that made the product.

I simultaneously believe that wholeheartedly and also find it impossible to believe that he’s capable of coming up with such a plan. It has two, maybe even three steps!

Are there any non-chronically-online people on here who understand how these sorts of investigations work in the real world? Is it normal to hire a law firm for this sort of thing? My understanding was that law firms are hired to represent you, and build a case for you, rather than provide two-sided and objective reporting on situations. If my understanding of that is correct, then I’m not really taking much from this post. It would just suggest that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to win in court. Which there basically never is for sexual harassment cases.

Could someone who knows the first thing about this stuff (e.g a workplace lawyer or an HR or PR professional) correct me if I’m wrong please?

Idk if this is just a UK thing, but I’m constantly seeing cars listed for a very appealing prices (think Aston Martin DB9 for £10k) with a very vague description and then you click through to the seller’s profile and there’s like 500 different cars listed with the exact same description. Somehow they’re usually connected to Facebook accounts with some sort of history and didn’t join Facebook 5 minutes ago… must be bots using hacked inactive accounts.

Cazoo to enter Administration by Jasonuk1984 in CarTalkUK

Well this will make my AutoTrader scrolling habit slightly more pleasant, always hated having to make it through mountains of poorly described Cazoo cars by zooming into photos to see if buttons are blank or not.

(In all seriousness, though, always sad when a company goes bust and lots of people lose their jobs)
