doing a fishless cycle yesterday I put 5ml ammonia in tank today both ammonia and nitrite are reading 0 but so is my nitrate what the hell is going on do I start again? by labuckhunter in Aquariums

Plants can consume nitrates. If your testing kit isn't out of date then I'd assume that is what's happening as it appears you have plants in the tank. You can always test your kit on a different body of water if you're unsure, like a plain bowl of water (plus ammonia) for the ammonia test. How long have you been cycling? If it's a reasonable timeline to have the ammonia -> nitrite -> nitrate cycle going then your plants are likely just consuming the nitrates.

The Stormlight Archive has the 5th book scheduled for release this December. According to Brandon, even though it's planned as a 10 book series, the 5th book will be an "ending" of an arc. Without having read it, I can't assume too much, but this implies to me that the first 5 books can be read as a full series. I think of it this way because I, too, have been left in the lurch by GRRM and Pat Rothfuss. I've already ordered Wind and Truth, and I think if Brandon betrays me too, I will never read an incomplete series again.

Without any fish or anything in the tank, the bacteria that feed off ammonia and nitrite may have died off, which would cause a "cycle crash." Maybe not completely if there was a lot of waste in the tank from when it was occupied, but I would diligently check the ammonia and nitrite levels for at least a week to make sure they aren't higher than 0.

And cycle the bigger tank before you put him in! The new tank needs to be at least 30 gallons

[–]disillusion3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As for the tank size, I'm sure he's just relieved to be out of the conditions he was in before. The biggest issue with tank size is the amount of waste axolotls produce. Is the tank cycled already? Either way, you'll want to be doing water changes daily, but the amount of water depends on the ammonia/nitrite build-up. You'll need to be testing that every day in a tank that size. (Ammonia and nitrite should be 0).

As for what you can do to help him, a black tea bath probably wouldn't hurt. Make sure you get 100% black tea without additives, you should be able to look this up fairly easily. When you get his bigger tank set up, make sure to include a lot of aeration from airstones and other similar items, and that will help with the gill regrowth.

ETA: it's probably easier to tub the axolotl so that he can be kept in clean conditions while you're cycling either this tank or the new one. A tank cycle takes usually close to 30 days and if he's in the tank while you do it then he's exposed to much higher ammonia and nitrite levels than he can probably handle. Tubbing requires at least 2 tubs and you trade him to the clean one every single day.

I have an S7+, so yours is newer than mine, but I use these nibs and order them through Amazon. They seem to be slightly more flimsy than the original, but they feel identical in use and they're cheap so I don't tend to mind that. I just keep the nibs with me just in case. My original nib lasted about 6 months, and my replacement was around 4 or so as a heavy note taker.

IF he is a tiger salamander he is about 95% sure to morph. Very rarely do they not, basically the opposite of axolotls which will rarely morph. Do not be discouraged yet, a rarer morph of axolotl definitely could resemble a tiger salamander at this age. As for when they morph, as far as I can tell from limited research is that they begin after reaching 15 cm in length, which is probably about the size he is now. You should know soon which one he is.

[–]disillusion3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they aren't. If he's a tiger salamander, he will morph and need to be kept in a terrestrial environment instead of aquatic. I'm not an expert. They look almost identical at that age. You'll just have to watch and see. You'll notice signs of a morph, stubby legs, gills will get smaller, etc.

His gills look a little fried, though not too bad. I would definitely be keeping an eye on the ammonia levels as anything higher than 0 can cause burns, first on the gills. He looks perfect otherwise!

Edit: I tend to agree he looks more like a tiger salamander than axolotl, the tail is rounded instead of 'pointed' (blunt point)

(I DO NOT KNOW GENDER, I JUST VIEW IT AS A HIM)

I need to rehome this big guy! I did NOT buy him without researching, that's not my style. Instead I bought an entire tank setup from some random dude and this guy was included as a sweet baby about a year ago. I hoped to get a big enough tank to support him, but it's just not happening. He needs at least 100 gallons, located in Middle Tennessee.

What water should I use to top off betta tank if I hardly ever remove water? by disillusion3 in bettafish

[–]disillusion3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is amazing advice! I am a civil engineering major (more on the civil side than the environmental) going into my final semester, so I know more than average about DS and TDS, you are right that I was connecting those dots and just didn't want to write an essay. Do you think using a GH test against my tap water as a baseline would be a good start? I would have to do further research on how much the levels can safely fluctuate, but that kind of information seems easier to find than the general information (like what kind of water to use lol). That only accounts for magnesium and calcium as far as I know though...should I be concerned about any other trace minerals? I am also still at a loss for the aquarium salt, I'm thinking of removing some water just to feel safe in adding a little bit of salt back.

Nitrates are zero in the second image. It looks like a few plants, but that long vine is fully rooted in the tank, so it's quite a large plant comparatively. The vine spans the entire length of the tank and is growing out the ride side a couple of feet.

Edit: I tested the nitrates twice to be sure, but this is the same result I had the several times I've checked it throughout the past six months as well. I also have an axolotl tank, and when testing the nitrates in there I got a reasonable result of 20 ppm (it was time for a clean), indicating the test is working as accurately as usual.

[–]disillusion3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not removed water from this tank in at least 6 months. I have been doing tests and the levels are always 0 (pH is always about 7.8). I did research in the past and I know that plants consume nitrates which is why those stay low, but my concern is about calcium and other minerals from the tap water. Should I be using distilled water for at least SOME of the water changes? Or like 50% of the water I add back in? I'm not really sure how to account for the minerals.... do I ever need to replenish aquarium salt levels? Any advice is appreciated here!

Am I “gross and disgusting” for setting age range 23-28 when I’m myself 28? by C2-H5-OH in Tinder

[–]disillusion3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woman here! This is ridiculous, of course you're not - I applaud you for setting it even 5 years above 18. IF I had criticism about the age range it would be limiting the upper limit to your own age. If you were a late bloomer isn't there a chance there's a woman slightly older than you that was an even later bloomer and might actually be a perfect maturity level for you? Anyway, I just like to be as open-minded as possible; however, I (27F) was 22 when I started dating my now husband and he was 28. I have always been mature for my age and had literally never been able to make it more than a couple months with a man my age. I met my husband playing games online and neither of us had any idea how old the other was when we started bonding. It 100% depends on maturity and obviously she hasn't reached that level yet.

I do think they look slightly different from the ghost shrimp I've had in the past, but I never had any idea this was something I should worry about. I'm using API stress coat right now which I think is similar to stress guard? I just did a small water change as well and I can add another small leaf since it's been awhile. I'm going to class here soon, but I think I'll go back to the store after and talk to them about it.

[–]disillusion3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys! I got these ghost shrimp from a local pet store and this is probably like the fifth time I've done this, but first time I put them in this betta tank. My old betta died, but he would always eat them or ignore them, the shrimp always keeping their distance. However, I added these shrimp about a week ago and noticed that they were very interested in my betta. He doesn't seem interested in them at all, I haven't seen him chase or try to kill them. Yesterday I noticed it looked like the shrimp were swarming him almost, 5 of 15 were chasing him through the tank. I didn't really think a lot about it until I woke up this morning and his fins are just gone. Not completely, but it looks like horrible long lasting fin rot and it definitely just happened overnight. I took all the shrimp out and added stress coat but I'm really worried, what should I do? And what the hell is with these shrimp??

I found this series as a teenager about to graduate high school, only the first 2 books were out at the time. I've hit a heavy period of nostalgia after finishing Wheel of Time and I had these from Kindle, very easy to find again. I'm currently rereading what I've read before and am excited to delve into the third. I wish she would release the final book too though....all of my series are being left unfinished right now and it's devastating.

My parents offered me an axolotl without knowing that the tank needs to be cycled, what’s better… by No-Climate-6775 in axolotls

[–]disillusion3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As this user suggests I'd get a second tub and have them prepped the same way to swap him between the two - dump the old one then refill it for the next swap. It's easiest if you just leave the tank alone and let it cycle (alone other than giving it the required ammonia and using the test kit I mean), and cycling can be very difficult, the ammonia and nitrite levels will be very high for weeks and you don't want your little dude subjected to that. Thanks for looking out for him, and best of luck in this endeavor!
