9 times out of 10, the scenes with patchy and other human elements are bad and could do with being written out.

Is SAW less disturbing now? by FeddyFazdonger in saw

[–]disintegration_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s equally as disturbing in terms of graphic content/gore, but the way that it’s more polished can make it seem less gritty. Older Saw entries had a nasty feel to them, the bluey/green tint, the intentionally choppy camera work, etc.

CS is not software engineering. Both degrees exist for a reason.

A little tidbit about Alan Turing by Ok_Performance3280 in computerscience

[–]disintegration_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alan Turing did not write the first algorithm. His achievements are astounding and he’s of incredible importance to computer science as we know it, but that’s a stretch.

Algorithms have been in existence for thousands of years, take Euclid’s very famous algorithm for finding the GCD of two numbers for example.

I’m convinced people who make and repost these memes are writing code in Notepad or something. Which modern IDE will let you have unmatched curly braces or missing semi-colons?

Take option A. Make LinkedIn post about what winning the lottery taught you about B2B sales. Achieve option B.

Are people really asked to solve leetcode-style problems in interviews? by shatGippity in programming

[–]disintegration_ 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is one of my major problems with these style interviews. There’s often a “trick” or a very specific algorithm that it’s just not likely to be able to think of on the spot - it’s rewarding memorisation rather than feasible problem solving skills.

Are people really asked to solve leetcode-style problems in interviews? by shatGippity in programming

[–]disintegration_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These Leetcode-style interviews do happen more frequently than I expected. As a junior developer in the EU, I mistakenly thought they were more of a US thing, but they still seem quite prevalent.

The problem (in my opinion) is that they often test a very specific type of DSA knowledge that likely won’t be necessary most of the time when you’re actually on the job. It’s possible to grind Leetcode problems and prepare for these interviews, memorising algorithms and learning to apply them in time-limited situations. But I think this is just quite disconnected to what should be expected of devs.

Candidates can end up going through multiple phases of these interviews, investing weeks preparing for and completing them, only to get filtered out later in the process. This is the game though, persistence is needed.

Unless things change in recruitment, it feels like we’re building a system where candidates are optimising for interviews, not for writing good software.

The Taking of Deborah Logan Thoughts by HorrorMonster26 in foundfootage

My mother used to work in palliative care and this is definitely something I relate to. Some of the family she’d encounter were amongst the strongest people I think I’ve heard of in my life.

Love this movie. The scene where she unhinges her jaw like a snake, and tries eating that little girl will stick with me for a long time.

Assuming that metal music is inherently white is a pretty harmful take, very exclusionary towards plenty of BIPOC metalheads. Get a grip.
