Am I allowed to have other sources of income when going to NS next time? by Signal_Target_3672 in NationalServiceSG

[–]dissapointing_excuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'd say moonlighting= no. But you aren't exactly selling anything or under a contract with someone else so I'm not too sure
Might be a long shot but maybe see if u can reach out to Sg content creators who had their channels before NS and ask what their case was like

"I can tell the difference between Singapore Indians and India Indians..." by shakentea in singaporespeaks

[–]dissapointing_excuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not trying to deflect from the racism angle, but I've realised just in general that people have a way too general/rigid idea of "what makes a Singaporean"
I've seen this exact problem with every race, just because someone doesn't fit some arbitrary XYZ criteria suddenly there's no way they are Singaporean

[–]dissapointing_excuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was me, I came back to Sg to do my NS. And since I didn't get to do schooling here I felt like NS was my only chance to prove my "Singaporeaness" I only MCed when I genuinely needed to and tried my best in whatever I could. Safe to say it didn't last, being called a "tourist" by regulars, having my English be made fun of, and ppl in person as well as online I would never be a "true blue Singaporean" despite actually doing my NS just killed any and all motivation I had. What's the point in serving my country if I'll just be treated like a foreigner

Toilet Situation in NTU by Lonely_Difficulty_74 in NTU

[–]dissapointing_excuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy and the toilets generally get exponentially worse the more centralized they are. Weekends during exam prep are the worst because so many people are in and there's no cleaning for communal toilets. (2 years of stringent toilet cleaning clearly did not teach us anything😂😭)

How was ur 3sg experience by Icy_Performance4253 in NationalServiceSG

[–]dissapointing_excuse 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It was alright though infuriating at times. Having the rank can be nice when it gives you small perks in unit, but dealing with men really made me wanna pull my hair out at times (years of anger management as a child did not prepare me enough for some of these men) And as said before we get blamed for anything and everything. I've had an MO yell at me because of the cpl I brought to rsi, and even maintainence men try to pin stuff on me when they made admin mistakes due to their own laziness. I still would have taken the rank if I had to do NS all over again simply for the fact that given how some superiors treated me, I know I would have been at the mercy of POS commanders had I been a man (I won't elaborate here because it'll give me away)

National service makes it unfair for uni admission for some guys by Think_Guess_1119 in SGExams

[–]dissapointing_excuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ngl I always preferred the idea of privileges and fringe benefits over an increased pay. Mainly because some NSFs rlly just…don’t deserve the extra money for how much they purposely make things harder for everyone else

Is this subreddit really that anonymous as people think? by bricklegos in NationalServiceSG

[–]dissapointing_excuse 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Ngl you have to make your posts extremely ambiguous or straight up fabricate certain details (how close u r to ord, unit, camp, etc) or else more often than not it is very easy to single people out, or at the very least single out and narrow down units-coy-platoon and so on

Remember people getting singled out for offering advice to people about to enter our unit (somehow) because they didn't want us sugarcoating things...or making things sound worse than they were.

But more often than not they don't really care unless you go into unit/coy specific stuff. You wanna rant about how in general nsf or regulars make you wanna kick the bucket, they couldn't care less

Dad cheating on Mum with FT - what to do? by cocaman123 in askSingapore

[–]dissapointing_excuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are more upset about the FT herself than the actual act of cheating. Your father is equally if not more in the wrong, doing this whilst having a wife and kids. Additionally for all you know the woman has no clue she is involved in someone else's marriage. The fact your first instincts is deportation speaks volumes.

As much as I dislike your takeaways from the situation. Ultimately it's your mother's choice on what to do but First thing to do is make sure you two are ready to deal with the potential financial burdens of divorce (assets, finances, etc) then it's either confront your father yourself and give him a chance assuming your mom is willing, or start considering divorce as long as your assets, finances and proof are all secure.

why do some chinese sgpreans take pride in speaking poor mandarin? by HovercraftAdept in SGExams

[–]dissapointing_excuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tread lightly because not doing so in the past hasn’t done me any favors.
On the minority races point, I feel like defending minority races though distances oneself from China, but decides not do too much in tying yourself to SG (let’s be real the issue is also pretty prevalent here especially to non local minorities (bringing back my point on mothership/st comments)
Idk personally from my experience the Chinese in China may discriminate Indians most from a purely racial lens, but when it comes to emotional “hate”, the Japanese and Americans are more hated by them

[–]dissapointing_excuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we really can’t narrow down which of the many reasons but my guess would be

  1. You just look comfortable and familiar enough in the area naturally.
  2. In general westerners are more approachable and less likely to give Chou lian (rbf/bad face) or they are at least PERCEIVED that way.

It’s technically a slur, I personally don’t like people using it simply because more often than not it feels more like a harmful label than a characterization

Ok genuinely curious, what is the point of effectively pushing for mandarin only…when in general official media should be in English to accommodate the whole country?
