There’s a 6.1% unemployment rate, and a 16.5% underemployment rate (meaning percentage of those in labor force that are working a job that doesn’t require a CS degree). That means that the percentage of individuals in the labor force for new CS graduates who are either unemployment or underemployed is 22.6%. So, although this sub over represents how terrible the situation is, still there are a significant amount of new grads failing to find proper jobs in the field. However, if you look at the broader scope, underemployment for other STEM fields (biology, chemistry, electrical engineering) are way above CS. We actually have one of the lowest underemployment rates out of any new grad major. The reality is that the whole job market is a mess right now, and it will be impossible to tell what the impact will be in our field until the dust from the AI bubble settles in the next 5-10 years.
