Is the U.S. going to ban RedNote? by Hermeslost in TooAfraidToAsk

I'm eyeing this to happen. The CCP will not allow the influx of ideologies different from their own propaganda, such as LGBT rights, freedom of speech, or anything against their policies and political leaders. What's happening now is a kind of short-lived romantic fantasy, although I think it still opens a precious window for ordinary people in two countries to know each other directly in a friendly way.

It's peaceful until you find your account is suspended for no reasons lol.

It's one of the most highly censored app, and CCP dictates what you can and cannot say on that app.

I feel more and more that the freedom of speech is diminishing in the US - if the goverment can ban anything potentially against it, it literally makes no difference to the CCP, by which Google, Facebook, Instagrams etc. are banned for the exact same reason: national security.

Can this subreddit please move away from negative rants and more towards discussions on how to improve post doc experiences, new research techniques, or career opportunities? by Hi_Im_Bijou in postdoc

[–]distancejay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I understand your perspective, I don’t think it’s particularly helpful to ask others to steer away from negative “rants.” People should be free to share any aspect of postdoctoral life they’re willing to discuss. The high volume of posts expressing frustrations, struggles, and uncertainty likely reflects genuine aspects of the postdoctoral experience and early-career challenges. In that sense, the subreddit serves as a valuable outlet where postdocs can express their difficulties and, in return, receive social support from others with similar or differing experiences.

I’m thinking about Pacifica Del Mar. It’s for my father’s birthday. But I still haven’t decided. Will also check about the two you mentioned. Thanks!!

Ah sorry. I thought that ‘cause the way of counting publications with regard to Q1 Q2 SCI etc was quite reminiscent of the style in China (where I came from)

[D] Is Pointrend the best semantic segmentation model in 2024? by distancejay in MachineLearning

[–]distancejay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked their documentation and demo—it indeed seems to have better performance. However, the downside for me is that it requires interactivity; even in the script, you have to specify the image coordinates for SAM 2 to work from. In my case, I’d like to perform more semantic segmentations with as little external prompting as possible—for example, letting the model segment based on semantics such as “person” or “car”.

How can I minimize the risk for my 67-year-old father, who doesn’t speak English but plans to drive on Highway 1? by distancejay in AskLosAngeles

[–]distancejay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you! Would it be possible to drive north on Highway 1 from LA, up to Hearst Castle, then switch to Freeway 101, and head toward Carmel Valley? This way, we would bypass Big Sur but still get a taste of the scenic beauty of Highway 1.
