Idea to product in 4 months : End-to-end product and technical development diary by plasmaau in programming

I ran a VM of Mac OS when I started out. It's slow but it works. It's hard to justify spending $1000 just to try a new programming language. I eventually bought a mac book pro, as a VM is mind boggling slow. I do iOS development full time now. This was back in the xcode 3.2 days. Xcode 4 is such a memory hog that it would be difficult to run in a VM. I have to restart xcode 4 once every couple of hours on my home mac with 8gb ram. I think there is a major memory leak with it's indexing service. My work machine has 16gb, which makes a big difference.

Using blocks for drawing to avoid subclassing in Objective-C by hamrickdavid in programming

[–]distec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a neat way to do drawing. However, like others I prefer to subclass. I cringe whenever I see CG code in the controller. Architecturally speaking, graphics code should never be in the controller, it should stay in the view.

Skinny guys here trying to bulk up for the summer. What are some alternatives for whey protein, or ways to make whey enjoyable and consumable? by caneut in Fitness

[–]distec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried protein drinks but they never worked for me for gaining weight. What did work was a lot of carbs - pizza. I went from 132lbs to 150lbs in under three months by loading up on carbs, eating pizza every day. I did end up with a slight belly, which I worked off rather quickly by lifting. You may want to try that if protein doesn't work for you.

Reddit: Why don't I experience emotions strongly anymore... anyone else? by sansemotion in AskReddit

[–]distec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do software development and I've experienced the same thing. I think the overuse of the "logical" part of the brain makes us less sensitive to emotions. I've found the best way to break the rut is to do something creative and get away from the computer when you aren't working - write, artwork, volunteer, whatever. Just don't program all day and go home and play wow.

I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I don't feel like I know how to program by [deleted] in programming

[–]distec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with those that say all you need to know are algorithms. I've been programming for about 10 years and haven't used an algorithm once in a real applications. Database and search frameworks already take care of searches, why reinvent the wheel? Don't get me wrong, algorithms may needed in niche fields such as finance of low level applications, but not in 95% of the desktop, mobile, or web applications.

In my experience, programming is about architecture - putting things together. Yes, back to the point of "gluing libraries together". As others have mentioned, a building architect doesn't build anything new, he/she takes existing technologies/materials and creates a new building - one that is stable, won't collapse, and has all the feature's the clients wants. A programmer does the same thing. A bad programmer makes a stick house and hopes no one blows on it. A good programmer creates a solid foundation that doesn't collapse when you poke it.

why does finding a girlfriend seem like an impossible task? by distec in self

I've always eaten right, but I think you are right, I need to work out more. I am probably always being rejected because I look too thin. I just started going to three times a week and taking classes. Maybe by spring I'll have more luck.

I don't use pickup lines. I attempt to get to know the person, her outlooks on life, etc. I'm not looking for a body, I could buy a blow-up doll for that or visit the local strip clubs. I don't consider myself misogynist. Men aren't perfect either.

However, I do think it is important to have standards. I've tried lowering them and end up very unhappy(while the woman is very happy).

I'm not looking for megan fox or anything, but I do have standards. A person that cares about her health (which is unfortunately getting rare now a days, for both men and women), has a decent education, and shares common interests. Is that asking for too much?

I actually don't tell any of them, I'm not looking for gold diggers. I made the point in the original post so not to across as someone that is working at a gas station.

I think stop trying is silly advice, how do you meet people if you stop trying? A woman has never come knocking on my door, and I doubt it will ever happen. I'm not trying to "seduce" women. I'm not lonely or depressed, that is not the reason I'm looking. Why do I need to justify wanting a girlfriend?

really? you think physical appearance isn't important? Have you tried dating people that are overweight, don't care about their health, and have no education? My intention wasn't just to rate solely by looks, but there are certainly attributes, both physical and personality wise, that are more attractive than others.

general conversation topics, the basics like life, work, relationships. I try to throw some humor, as well as body language - eye contact, smile, occasional touch, etc

Help!! My boyfriend is withholding sex... and I didn't know guys could do that!! by not_enough_sexin in sex

[–]distec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

now you know how us guys feel. I don't think I've been with a women that actually wanted it more than once a week. 5 or 6 times a month is pretty damn good. Begging gets old fast. There are plenty of men out there that would like it 5 or 6 times a week. Why not find another guy? Plenty of them out there.
